Texas House Passes Pro-Life Bill ? Again

Texas House Passes Pro-Life Bill ? Again

by Bethany Monk

The Texas House on Tuesday evening passed the much-talked-about fetal pain bill, banning abortions after 20 weeks ? when preborn babies begin to feel pain. The legislation will need Senate approval before being sent to the governor.

?Americans in Texas and across the country are overwhelmingly opposed to the brutal, late-term abortions that end the lives of between 15,000 and 18,000 children feeling pain each year,? said Marilyn Musgrave, vice president for government affairs at Susan B. Anthony (SBA) List.

The bills ? HB 2 and SB1? would require abortionists to have admitting privileges in hospitals no farther than 30 miles away. Abortionists would also have to be qualified to treat life-threatening complications.

The House passed similar legislation late last month. However, Sen. Wendy Davis blocked it with a filibuster. She was stopped after more than 11 hours after veering off topic. Then, a cacophony of more than 400 abortion activists interrupted the proceedings; this prevented the vote from taking place before the midnight deadline.

?The recent disturbing behavior displayed by abortion advocates reflect the truth that those opposed to this common ground legislation are more concerned about the institution of abortion rather than the individual lives at stake,? said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser.

For Davis, it?s a matter of ?personal liberty,? which is what she told news outlets following the filibuster. Mainstream media have dubbed her a ?hero? for supporting late-term abortions.

After she blocked the bill, Gov. Rick Perry announced a second special session, which began July 1. He made it clear that ?mob rule? would not interfere with the vote this time.

On the second day of this special session, abortion activists protested outside the state Capitol in Austin chanting ?Hail Satan,? as pro-lifers sang ?Amazing Grace.??

This did not deter those who value the sanctity of life.

On Monday, more than 2,000 pro-lifers participated in the Stand for Life rally on the Capitol steps. Musgrave and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee were among the event?s speakers.

Huckabee asked the crowd to pray for lawmakers as they ?courageously take a stand? for life ?in Texas, the United States and across the world.?

?The law should reflect our instinctive resistance to this barbarism,? Musgrave explained.? ?We applaud Gov. Perry and the pro-life Texas state legislators who have been working hard to make this a reality.?
