Berkeley: Man dies in hit-and-run crash on I-80 overpass at University Avenue

BERKELEY -- A pedestrian died early Monday morning after he was hit by a car on the University Avenue overpass at Interstate 80, police said.

Officers on patrol came upon the man around 5:10 a.m. near 6th Street on the overpass, Berkeley police spokesman Officer Jennifer Coats said.

Berkeley fire crews responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene. The driver of the car that hit him left the scene and hasn't been located, Coats said. Details regarding the nature of the collision and how it may have occurred were not available immediately. The man's age and identity were not released, nor were there any descriptions of the vehicle that may have hit him.

Investigators spent the morning at the scene, and University Avenue remained closed from 6th Street to West Frontage Road until 10:45 a.m.

Investigators were trying to determine if the pedestrian avoided a walkway near 6th Street that takes pedestrians and bikers below the overpass and away from the University Avenue onramp.
