QGC Applauds Qld Legislation

QGC has welcomed new Queensland Government legislation that will significantly reduce environmental impact for gas developments.

The Mines Legislation (Streamlining) Amendment Bill was passed last night.

?For the Queensland Curtis LNG Project alone we anticipate that the new legislation will allow us to reduce the number of water and brine plants from up to 37 of each to only three water treatment plants and one brine processing facility,? said QGC Operations Director Walter Simpson.

?This will reduce our environmental impact and also reduce the number or extent of impact on farms and properties.

?Given our preference to construct larger facilities on land owned by QGC, this will mean fewer facilities on land owned by others and will mean we will avoid about 70 properties in the Surat Basin.?

Mr Simpson said the industry could now move water and brine efficiently across tenement boundaries which would mean less infrastructure would need to be built.

?The new legislation will assist in the development of an integrated gas industry so companies can significantly reduce their ?footprint? in the areas they operate,? he said.
