Keep kids, pets out of hot cars : Newcastle News ? News , Sports ...

NEW?? 11:30 a.m. June 5, 2013

As the weather gets warmer, it is a good time to remember that the temperature of a parked car can quickly rise above 100 degrees.

Drivers should not leave their pets or kids inside a vehicle, especially on hot days.

In sunny weather, the temperature inside a car can quickly rise to 120 degrees or more, even with windows left slightly open. Animals left in a hot car, even for just a few minutes, can suffer from heat stroke, brain damage or death.

In addition, leaving a pet unattended in a hot car can be grounds for animal cruelty charges. In warm weather, leave pets at home instead of taking them along errands.

Furthermore, in Washington, it is unlawful to leave children younger than 16 years old unattended in a vehicle at any time, whether it is parked or idling.

The weather is supposed to remain in the 70s through the week, at times potentially reaching 80 degrees. When the temperature is 75 degrees outside, it is 110 degrees inside of a car.
