The Chargers are now in the mix to interview Andy Reid, joining the Cards and the Chiefs in pursuit of the former Eagles head coach, two league sources said Thursday morning.
?
Both sources disputed an ESPN report that said Reid and the Chiefs are very close to a deal that would make Reid head coach in Kansas City.
?
The first source said Reid is clearly at the top of the Chiefs? list. Reid met in Philadelphia Wednesday with Chiefs brass for nearly nine hours, and there have been no reports of the Chiefs interviewing any other candidates yet.
However, the second source told CSNPhilly Eagles Insider Geoff Mosher that the Chiefs have not yet made Reid a formal offer.
Despite the Chiefs? strong interest, Reid still plans to meet with the Cards either Thursday or Friday and then travel to San Diego to meet with the Chargers, the sources both said.
?They?re still talking to all three teams,? the first source said.
?
Reid has now been linked to three of the six NFL head coaching openings, other than Philadelphia. He hasn?t been associated with openings in Chicago, Buffalo or Cleveland. The Browns are now operated by former Eagles President Joe Banner, who Reid has had a falling out with.
?
The Chargers fired Norv Turner Monday after six seasons. They haven?t reached the playoffs since 2009 and haven?t won a playoff game since 2008, also the last year the Eagles won a playoff game. The Chargers were 56-40 under Turner.
?
The Cards fired head coach Ken Whisenhunt after six seasons, and the Chiefs fired Romeo Crennel after just one full season and the final three games of 2011.
Reid, who won 10 playoff games with the Eagles from 2000 through 2008, had more career playoff wins in Philly than the Chiefs have in their 53-year history and the Cards have in their 93-year history and as many as the Chargers have in their 53-year history.
