Retro Game Network | The New Retro Gaming Community ...

Currently, all of the talk in the modern video game community is 11-18-12, the release date of the upcoming Nintendo Wii U console. But since this is a retro gaming site, let?s go back in time to another console launch date: 9-9-99. That of course was the date that Sega released the Dreamcast to the US, which would ultimately be Sega?s final entry in the video game hardware market. When the Dreamcast was made available in the United States, there were 19 launch titles to go along with it. One game that was supposed to be part of the lineup was a title called ?Geist Force?, which ended up not only being shelved during the launch, but ultimately shelved indefinitely. That is, until now.

If you are not familiar with this unreleased program, Geist Force was one of the earliest games programmed for the Sega Dreamcast platform. So early in fact, that it was produced on equipment that was not yet considered standard for the platform. (More on that in a moment.) It?s a shooter game title that for whatever reason, ended up not being released alongside the remaining 19 launch games. A former employee of Sega made an post on ASSEMblergames, and aside from talking about his personal experiences at Sega, also made mention that he had a copy of the game in his possession.?ASSEMblergames had recently run a fundraiser, in hopes of making the game be available for retro gaming fans to play and enjoy, and most importantly, as a way to make sure that the game would never become ?lost?.

The fundraiser was a complete success, and?ASSEMblergames was able to preserve this piece of video game history, after nearly a two year anticipation period. The community gave special thanks to everyone that donated to the cause by creating a special edition reproduction copy of the program for their personal video game collection. It?s unknown how many copies of this special edition were created. All of the reproduction copies of the disc have been long sold out, which then left ASSEMblergames to continue on to the next step of the original plan, which was to release an ISO disc image of the program, and making it available for download via the Internet, which is where we take you today.

Earlier this week, that second part of the plan finally became a reality, and the game is now available for you to download and burn for use on your own Sega Dreamcast, at no cost to you! Just register to be part of the?ASSEMblergames vBulletin boards, and you?re on your way. If you?ve ever made backup copies of your Dreamcast library, you know that making copies that work properly can sometimes be a hassle, but for a game was unique and rare as this one, it very well may be something worth doing! However, there is one thing to keep in mind. It?s being said that the game is at some parts of the journey unplayable, and that it can be prone to locking up and causing a system reboot. (Even the video sample has this problem.) This could be due to a number of things, everything from the fact that the game was programmed on non-standard development tools, or it could be using a CD-R, since CD-R?s didn?t hold as much as the GD-ROM format that Sega used for the Dreamcast. In other words, play at your own risk. The link to download the ROM image is below, and special thanks to Retro Collect, the site where I initially learned about this topic!
