Hackensack, NJ (July 12, 2012) Experts in bone marrow diseases from John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center, one of the nation's 50 best cancer centers, will be presenting treatment updates at an educational conference hosted by the Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation (AA&MDSIF). The one-day conference titled "Living with Aplastic Anemia, MDS, or PNH Patient and Family Conference" is designed for patients, caregivers, family, and friends of those with bone marrow diseases. The event will take place on Saturday, July 28 at the Renaissance Newark Airport Hotel in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
Stuart Goldberg, M.D, Chief of the Division of Leukemia will discuss treatments for higher-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) patients and will provide updates on new and experimental therapies. Nutritionist Heather Ann Younker, RD, CNSC will present facts and dispel popular myths about the relationship between nutrition and bone marrow diseases, and will lead a support forum for aplastic anemia patients.
"Aplastic anemia, MDS, and PNH are rare blood disorders that require special treatment and expertise. Unfortunately, finding good information about these diseases can be difficult for many patients and their families," said Dr. Goldberg. "This a great forum for patients and their loved ones to learn about new strategies that will help them better manage their disease."
AA&MDSIF is the world's leading nonprofit health organization dedicated to supporting patients and families living with aplastic anemia, MDS, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) and related bone marrow failure diseases. More than 125 people are expected to attend this conference, and each will have the opportunity to talk face-to-face with leading oncology experts from around the country as well as connect with other patients and families in the community. The seminars have been broken down into two segments, with the morning focusing on learning about each disease, and the afternoon dedicated to supportive care options and professionally facilitated support forums.
"Nearly 15,000 Americans are diagnosed with aplastic anemia, MDS, or PNH each year," said Heather Ann Younker. "Providing a stronger support system and larger network can make a big difference for people with such complicated diseases, which unfortunately, is too often misunderstood."
Nutrition plays an important role in the support of patients undergoing treatments for bone marrow diseases. Proper nutrition is especially significant, along with medication, to help the patient maintain their weight and body's store of nutrients, keep up their strength, energy and promote proper healing and recovery.
This event is free to all patients, caregivers, friends, and family of those affected with aplastic anemia, MDS, or PNH, but advance registration is required.
