Nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2012 Academy Awards, Agnieszka Holland's IN DARKNESS, is the poor man's SCHINDLER'S LIST, and I mean that as a high compliment. Now don't get me wrong. I think Spielberg made a masterpiece with his Shoah epic, but Holland earns astute emotions and mines similar themes yet in a more intimate setting. Based on the true story of a Polish sewer worker who charged a small group of Jewish refugees a daily fee to squat in the filthy sewers beneath the city. The title of the film is apt, as so much of it takes place in utter darkness. At almost two and a half hours in length, we feel every minute of their intensely long hiding. Like Schindler, our main character, Leopold Socha, played wonderfully by Robert Wieckiewicz, is an opportunist rather than a Jewish sympathizer. In fact, his anti-semitism is much more overt than Schindler's. On the other hand, his wife Wanda, an incredible Kinga Preis, is much more liberal at the outset, but wants to turn her back on the Jews when she fears for her life and that of her family. Their story is so searing, so vivid and unsentimental. It's no wonder I was more drawn to it than to the lives of the various Jews here. While all terrific actors who are given one horrifying scene after another to endure, their plight isn't as layered as that of Socha.There is one exception, and it's played by Benno Furmann, who is the love child of a Patrick Wilson/Josh Lucas bromance. Playing a man who leaves the sewers to escape INTO a concentration camp to save someone's life, he has leading man written all over her face. He easily commands the screen in all of his scenes. One of my all-time favorite critics, Roger Ebert, dismissed this film by saying that we've seen it all before. As much as I respect his opinion, I disagree. Usually films about this period in history tend to glorify the Jewish characters and they make every moment epic. IN DARKNESS does just the opposite. The Jews are just as flawed as any other characters here, as flawed as anybody would be when facing unreal, desperate circumstances. This is not a hyped up film. Something as simple as rainfall becomes an exciting action sequence, but it's played with an ingenious, dispassionate touch that Holland has always brought to her work.

Scientists reveal genetic mutation depicted in van Gogh's sunflower paintings

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? In addition to being among his most vibrant and celebrated works, Vincent van Gogh's series of sunflower paintings also depict a mutation whose genetic basis has, until now, been a bit of a mystery.

In a study published March 29 in the journal PLoS Genetics, however, a team of University of Georgia scientists reveals the mutation behind the distinctive, thick bands of yellow "double flowers" that the post-Impressionist artist painted more than 100 years ago.

"In addition to being of interest from a historical perspective, this finding gives us insight into the molecular basis of an economically important trait," said senior author John Burke, professor of plant biology in the UGA Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. "You often see ornamental varieties similar to the ones van Gogh painted growing in people's gardens or used for cut flowers, and there is a major market for them."

The most common sunflower phenotype is a composite flower head that contains a single whorl of large, flattened, yellow ray florets on the outer perimeter and hundreds to over a thousand individual, tubular, disc florets that can produce seeds. The double-flowered mutants that van Gogh depicted in many of his paintings, on the other hand, have multiple bands of yellow florets and a much smaller proportion of internal disc florets.

To understand the genetic basis of this difference, Burke and his colleagues began by using the same plant crossing techniques that Gregor Mendel, a 19th century contemporary of van Gogh, used to lay the foundation of modern genetics. The scientists crossed the common, or wild type, variety of sunflower with the double-flowered variety. Their initial findings suggested that a single, dominant gene was responsible for creating the double-flowered mutation. Subsequent crosses of the offspring revealed that a second mutation, which is recessive to both the double-flowered mutation and the wild-type version of the gene, results in a third flower type that is intermediate in form -- being elongated and yellow -- but tubular and containing the reproductive structures of the interior florets.

The scientists identified the responsible gene and sequenced it to show that in the double-flowered mutation, the portion of the gene that functions as an on/off switch is disrupted so that the instructions for making the outer rays are turned on in the portions of the plant that would normally produce the internal disc florets. In the second mutation, which results in the tubular florets, the insertion of a "jumping gene" disrupts the ability of the plant to produce normal ray florets. As a result, tubular florets are produced in place of the normal ray florets.

Finally, the scientists screened hundreds of sunflower varieties -- wild type, double-flowered and tubular -- and found that wild-type sunflower varieties never have a mutation in the HaCYC2c gene, while the double-flowered varieties always have the same mutation in the on/off switch. In addition, the tubular varieties always have a disrupted copy of the gene.

"All of this evidence tells us that the mutation we've identified is the same one that van Gogh captured in the 1800s," Burke said.

Additional authors include former post-doctoral researchers Mark Chapman, Shunxue Tang and Dorthe Draeger, current post-doctoral researchers Savithri Nambeesan and Jessica Barb, undergraduate Honors student Hunter Shaffer and former UGA professor Steven Knapp.

The research was funded by the Gloeckner Foundation Floriculture Grants Program and the National Science Foundation.

Are you ready for passive marketing? ? Marketing Innovations ...

Being passive isn?t always a good thing, but today I?ll show you ways you?ll want to be passive in your business!

One thing that wears out coaches, consultants and other service business owners is that the more successful you get, the more you have to work. While it?s nice to have clients, it?s important to reduce the amount YOU need to work in ? and on ? your business.

Working IN your business usually refers to delivery: doing what you do for your clients.

Working ON your business usually means growing or taking care of it: marketing, admin, new program development.

You should keep your actual work IN your business to one-third or less of the time you spend working. That means if you work a 5-day week, you should work with clients no more than 2 days per week.

(I?m sure some heads just exploded.)

Here?s why: Because if you spend all your hours working on your clients? businesses, you have no time to grow your own. Working ON your business ? figuring out how to generate more revenue ? should take 3 days of each week.

And guess what: if you want to earn more, you can work on your business to find ways to earn more while spending less time working with clients.

That may require a big transition for you. Some ideas here will help you with that:

First, let?s define the types of revenue you can have in your business:

Active revenue: this is what you earn when you do the work; basically, trading your time for money. Examples: coaching and consulting, as well as ?Done for You? services like organizing or tax prep.

Leveraged revenue: maximize your hourly earnings by working with groups or having others do the work. Examples: teaching a teleseminar series, membership sites that require a minimum of your time or subcontracting with other experts to help on your projects.

Passive: Work once ? and profit over and over again for years. Examples: eBooks and other infoproducts you sell on your website, ?residuals? and subscription renewals, membership sites that require none of your time once they?re up and running.

Recurring: Revenue that comes in at a predictable time. All the above ? active, passive and leveraged ? can be recurring, which is a beautiful thing. ;-) ?Examples: subscription fees, monthly payments for coaching programs, payment plans for any product or service, membership dues.

Now here?s the interesting thing: marketing can also be done actively, leveraged, passively and recurring.

Active marketing requires time from you: networking, speaking, producing content like articles and videos.

Leveraged marketing requires some time investment and upkeep, but achieves maximum results with minimal time. Examples: email marketing (send once, reach thousands), teleseminars and syndicated videos.

Passive marketing happens in the background, either by being done once or automated. Examples would be article marketing which, once you?ve done it, continues to send traffic to your site for years; and search engine optimization (SEO). Although SEO can be improved with ongoing efforts, several of my sites haven?t been touched in years and still get traffic and produce revenues ? 100% passively.

Recurring marketing could be a weekly leads group you attend, an ezine you send regularly, blogging or social media interaction.

So, here are the ways you can organize your business to operate:

• Active marketing, active delivery
• Active marketing, passive delivery
• Passive marketing, active delivery
• Passive marketing, passive delivery

Syria troops shell; Muslim group wants democracy

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian forces fired shells at a central city that has come to symbolize the anti-government uprising Monday, activists said, while the country's Muslim Brotherhood branch said it would work for a democratic state if President Bashar Assad falls.

The announcement by the exiled Syrian Muslim Brotherhood was an appeal by the Sunni Muslim group to minorities who fear for their place in a post-Assad Syria.

Since the uprising started last March with protests calling for political reform, it has stoked tensions among Syria's varied religious and ethnic groups.

Many in the opposition are from the country's Sunni majority. Religious minorities ? Christians, Shiites and Alawites, who include Assad ? have largely stuck by the regime, fearing new rulers could threaten their communities.

Speaking to reporters in Turkey, Brotherhood official Ali Bayanouni said the group would not monopolize power.

"The regime now is accusing the Muslim Brotherhood of trying to control Syria alone and of having aims of being the only rulers of Syria in the future," he said Sunday. "We are here today to reassure everyone that we will cooperate with all the other partners in the Syrian opposition to build a new Syria, a free Syria, a democratic Syria, and we will not attempt to the be the only ruling party in Syria."

The group issued a 10-point statement on the future of Syria, calling for a modern, democratic state with equality among all citizens and respect for human rights.

The reassurance came after Islamist parties catapulted to power in Tunisia and Egypt in the wake of Arab Spring uprisings, feeding concerns about religious and secular freedom there.

The movement has had no strong presence inside Syria since 1982, when Assad's father and predecessor, Hafez, ordered the military to quell a Brotherhood rebellion in the central city of Hama, sealing off the city in an assault that killed between 10,000 and 25,000 people.

Membership in the group inside Syria is punishable by death, but the group has remained active outside Syria's borders.

Syria's uprising has become increasingly militarized, with many in the opposition arming themselves in self-defense or to attack government troops. The U.N. says more than 8,000 people have been killed in the yearlong conflict.

The U.S., Europe and many Arab countries have condemned violent crackdowns by Assad's security forces and called for him to resign.

International envoy Kofi Annan said Monday that there can be no deadline for ending the Syria crisis, but it can't be allowed to drag on indefinitely.

Annan, the joint U.N.-Arab League envoy, spoke in Moscow after meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

"I told the parties on the ground: they can't resist the transformational winds that are blowing," he said. "They have to accept that reforms have to come, change has to come, and that is the only way to deal with the situation."

While the U.N. is not discussing military intervention, Annan said it could send teams to monitor an eventual cease-fire.

Moscow supports Annan's mission, but Russia and China have protected Syria from condemnation by the U.N. Security Council.

Turkey, which once had strong ties to Damascus, has now become a tough critic, even allowing opposition groups to organize on its soil.

A Foreign Ministry official said Monday that Turkey was closing its embassy in Damascus because of security concerns. The Turkish ambassador and other diplomats will return to Turkey, he said, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Turkey's consulate in the northern city of Aleppo will remain open, according to a statement posted on the embassy's website late Sunday.

Norway also said Monday it was closing its embassy.

Other countries, including the U.S., France, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, have already closed their embassies.

The situation in Syria is set to be a primary topic at an Arab League summit opening in Baghdad on Tuesday.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari told reporters Monday he believes Arab leaders will agree on a "doable" solution to end the conflict in Syria in line with Arab League proposals.

"It's not up to other countries to dictate to the Syrians what kind of leaders they have or don't have," he said. "I don't think there will be a call on Bashar to step aside."

A previous effort to stop the violence by sending Arab monitors failed to stop the violence, and opposition leaders accused the Assad regime of using the mission as a stalling tactic.

Syria, whose Arab League membership has been suspended, will not attend the summit.

Assad's forces kept up offensives against opposition areas on Monday, but they faced resistance from armed rebels in some places. Activists said regime forces shelled parts of the central city of Homs and carried out arrests raids elsewhere.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said nine civilians were killed in Homs out of the day's total death toll of 19. Two of the dead appeared to have been tortured, it said. Both were recently arrested in the southern province of Daraa.

Two rebels were killed in clashes with goverment soldiers, 11 of whom were killed in rebel attacks.

Another group gave much higher casualty figures. The Local Coordination Committees said 59 people were killed across Syria, 33 of them in Homs province. It said government forces appeared to be preparing to retake rebel-held parts of the country's third largest city.

The groups' numbers could not be independently verified.

The Syrian government blames the uprising on armed extremists backed by a foreign conspiracy and cites insurgent attacks to support its case.

The state news agency said on Monday that Syrian troops foiled an attempt by an "armed terrorist group" to sneak into the country from Turkey. It said the troops killed and wounded some of the attackers and seized their weapons.

It also said an armed group blew up a pipeline used to transport gasoline between the central cities of Homs and Hama. The Syrian Oil Ministry is working to repair the pipe, it said.

Government cuts income tax in political austerity rejig

(Reuters) - Chancellor George Osborne cut personal income taxes but aimed new levies on the wealthy on Wednesday, taking a political gamble while pledging to stick to his government's tough austerity plan.

He also said that economy was improving, although growth is set to remain very modest this year.

In a move that will please his own Conservative party, he cut a 50 percent income tax band for the highest earners to 45 percent, from next year on. The Conservatives say that high a levy is a barrier to aspiration. The Labour opposition say it is a fair way to spread the pain.

In a nod to the Liberal Democrats, the junior coalition partner, Osborne raised the income tax threshold by more than previously announced to 9,205 pounds ($14,300), taking more poorly paid people out of the tax net.

Osborne also introduced a new 7 percent stamp duty rate on sales of property worth more than 2 million pounds. But he cut corporation tax 2 pence to 24 pence in April.

"We'll be getting five times more money each and every year from the wealthiest in our society," he said, in a statement opponents are likely to challenge.

Mindful of the risk that heavily indebted Britain could lose its prized top-notch credit rating, Osborne said there was no room to soften the plan of unprecedented spending cuts and tax increases, aimed at reducing sky-high debts.

A shock jump in public sector borrowing to a new record in February, released ahead of the budget statement, provided a stark reminder that the chancellor of the exchequer had no money to provide the fragile economy with a significant boost.

"This budget reaffirms our unwavering commitment to deal with Britain's record debts," Osborne said in his budget speech to parliament.

Despite the ongoing risks from the euro zone debt crisis, Britain's economy was set to avoid a renewed recession and growth is expected to pick up in coming years, Osborne said.

The coalition government of Conservatives and Liberal Democrats also remained on track to meet its fiscal targets to erase the budget deficit - which topped 11 percent before it took office - within the next five years.

In November, the ongoing economic weakness had forced Osborne to add two more years of austerity after the 2015 election and pointing to a much slower recovery than they expected when they took power in 2010.

Ratings agencies have warned Britain that it could be downgraded, with apparently only Osborne's unwavering determination to cut the deficit keeping them onside for now.

AUSTERITY

Britain has been hit hard by the 2007-2009 financial crisis and had to spend tens of billions to bailout major banks.

The recovery from the steep slump has been very weak, with the economy still running well below its precrisis peak and the unemployment rate at its highest in 16 years.

Many Britons have experienced the worst squeeze on their living standards in at least a generation as price rises outpaced meagre wage growth and the government's tax increases and austerity measures are eating into households budgets.

But in recent weeks, the overall mood among businesses is slowly improving after taking a severe knock from the euro zone crisis at the end of last year.

The government's Office for Budget Responsibility forecast that growth should pick up from the 0.8 percent predicted for 2012 to 2.0 percent next year and 2.7 percent in 2014, leaving its November predictions largely unchanged.

World stocks mixed as Greece outweighs US recovery

BANGKOK (AP) ? World stock markets were mixed Monday as doubts about Greece's ability to follow through with tough economic reforms required under an international bailout overtook good news about the U.S. economy.

Benchmark oil rose fell below $107 per barrel while the dollar was higher against the euro but lower against the yen.

Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.4 percent to 5,941.15. Germany's DAX dropped 0.6 percent to 7,114.64 and France's CAC-40 lost 0.7 percent to 3,568.63.

Wall Street was poised to fall, with Dow Jones industrial futures down 0.3 percent to 13,130 and S&P 500 futures slipping 0.3 percent to 1,294.30.

Debt-loaded Greece recently qualified for a second multibillion dollar bailout after its private creditors took significant losses on their bond holdings to avoid losing even more money in a Greek bankruptcy. Now, new doubts are emerging about whether Greece will be able to deliver on austerity promises that were part of the bailout deal.

"Officials remain concerned about the ability of Athens to politically deliver on the tough economic-overhaul policies, especially considering that the forthcoming elections in Athens may mean new leaders aren't as committed to reforms," Stan Shamu, market analyst with IG Markets in Melbourne, Australia said in an email.

In Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index fell 1 percent to 21,115.29 as falling home prices in China and its weak trade in the first two months of 2012 kept investors' verve in check.

New home prices dropped in 45 Chinese cities in February, the official Xinhua News agency said, the result of government policies intended to cool property speculation.

Evergrande Real Estate Group lost 3.7 percent, and Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, the world's biggest bank by market value, lost 1.5 percent.

Further evidence from the U.S. last week that its economic recovery is gaining strength buoyed stocks elsewhere in Asia. The U.S. is a crucial market for the region's exporters.

The Dow Jones industrial average is up 8.3 percent this year, and the Nasdaq on Friday broke through 3,000 for the first time since the dot-com days more than a decade ago.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 finished higher for the fifth session in a row and recorded its highest close since a disastrous earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. The index gained 0.1 percent to 10,141.99.

South Korea's Kospi index added 0.6 percent to 2,047 and Australia's S&P ASX/200 rose 0.3 percent to close at 4,290.80. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and Indonesia fell.

In mainland China, the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.2 percent to 2,410.18. The Shenzhen Composite Index rose 1.1 percent to 993.75.

Benchmark oil for May delivery was down 32 cents to $106.74 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.95 to finish at $107.06 per barrel.

The euro fell to $1.3153 from $1.3171 late Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 83.08 yen from 83.36 yen.
