Trotter rallies Auburn against No. 10 SCarolina (AP)

COLUMBIA, S.C. ? The defending national champions aren't done yet.

Auburn and its maligned defense bounced back in a big way on Saturday, defeating No. 10 South Carolina 16-13. The Tigers (4-1, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) overcame a spotty offense to wear down the Gamecocks at the end. Barrett Trotter found Phillip Lutzenkirchen for the go-ahead, 9-yard touchdown with 1:38 left.

"This was a game they willed to win," Auburn coach Gene Chizik said.

It's been a rough go for the BCS champions since beating Oregon for the title last January.

Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton and defensive tackle Nick Fairley jumped to the NFL, leaving big holes on both sides of the ball. They lost their 17-game win streak and their aura of invincibility two weeks ago at Clemson, which ran up 624 yards.

Plus, the Gamecocks had plenty of motivation to succeed, losing twice to Auburn a year ago, including a humiliating 56-17 loss in the SEC championship.

Instead, it was the Auburn defenders who shut down South Carolina star tailback Marcus Lattimore and gave the offense enough time to pull out its 11th straight win against SEC opponents.

"It was a great atmosphere and all those kind of things and to come out with the win the way we did was great," Trotter said.

It also got Auburn off to the right start in an October filled with powerful opponents and critical contests. The Tigers travel to Arkansas next week before playing Florida and LSU their next two games.

When "you beat a top-10 team, I feel that is pretty evident what that does for you moving forward," Chizik said.

In Auburn's case, it may have saved a season teetering on the edge.

The Tigers were down 13-9 in the fourth quarter and couldn't break through on South Carolina's swarming defense. But Gamecocks assistant coach Ellis Johnson said Auburn's fast pace wore down his defenders. That was apparent down the stretch when Barrett led Auburn on a 12-play, 57-yard drive that ended with a pass to wide open Lutzenkirchen in front of the goal line. The junior fumbled the ball into the end zone, then recovered it just before sliding out of bounds to put Auburn ahead.

South Carolina advanced to Auburn's 29 on its final possession before time expired, though Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier argued that clock should have stopped with 1 second left after a completed pass for a first down.

Spurrier said he was told that receiver Bruce Ellington's knee touched the ground when the clock had run out. "That's what he told me. I said, 'Wait a minute now, don't you review that?'" Spurrier said.

They did not, giving the Gamecocks their seventh straight defeat against Auburn.

"It doesn't matter now," Spurrier said. "It's in the history books. So it's all over. We got beat. Still haven't beaten them."

The SEC issued a statement saying a review of the end showed game officials followed correct procedure.

Auburn used Michael Dyer like Spurrier had used Lattimore this season ? a clock-controller who can't be stopped.

Dyer ran for 141 yards on a career-high 41 carries. Dyer, a sophomore like Lattimore, had come into this one with 45 fewer carries than Gamecock standout, who was the SEC's rushing leader.

Lattimore ended with 66 yards on a season-low 17 rushes.

"The defense played good, the offense didn't," Lattimore said. "But we left it at that. We've got to put it behind us."

It looked like South Carolina's defense would be enough to bail it out of trouble as quarterback Stephen Garcia again had problems putting up points against an Auburn defense that was ranked last in the SEC.

Instead, the Tigers D rose and held the Gamecocks to 54 yards and one first down in the final period. And Trotter and the Tigers found their groove just in time. They converted four third downs in the go-ahead drive, including the touchdown to Lutzenkirchen.

"Holding (Lattimore) to under 100 yard and getting three or four turnovers were the goals this week and we did it and got the win," Auburn linebacker Jake Holland said.

Still, when Lattimore broke through for a 15-yard TD run midway through the third quarter, it appeared it might hold up the way South Carolina's defense was playing.

Melvin Ingram had 3 1/2 sacks and one of four South Carolina interceptions.

Trotter was 12 of 23 for 112 yards with two interceptions.

This one looked like a contest of who'd crack first: Auburn's last-in-the-SEC defense or South Carolina's can't-move-the-ball-too-well offensive attack that has struggled to score the past two weeks.

In the first half, it was the Tigers' D that came up bigger than it had this season. They held Lattimore to 36 yards on nine carries and the Gamecocks managed only four first downs on nine first-half possessions.

Garcia, a lightning rod for Gamecock criticism for his inconsistency, was at it again. He was 9 of 23 for 160 yards and two interceptions. Garcia also had a 50-yard scoring throw to Alshon Jeffery.

Garcia didn't speak to the media. His grandfather had passed away earlier this week, South Carolina said, and he wanted to be with family.

Usually, it's Lattimore who bails the Gamecocks out but even he didn't look like himself. He fumbled on one drive and could not fight his way through Auburn's charged up defense.

Not that the Tigers had much success with South Carolina's defense, led by Ingram and safety Antonio Allen. Ingram had two of the Gamecocks three first-half sacks and picked off Auburn's chance to extend a 9-6 lead right before halftime.

The Tigers' reliable kicker Cody Parkey was lined up for a 32-yard field goal try with 1:06 left when holder Ryan White took the snap, rolled right and threw toward Lutzenkirchen near the goal line. But defensive end Ingram had dropped back in coverage to end the threat.

UN committee starts Palestine review (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? The Security Council committee that reviews U.N. membership applications met for the first time Friday to consider the Palestinians' request for recognition by the world body before sending it on for a technical review.

French Ambassador Gerard Araud told reporters after the closed meeting that the committee will ask experts to determine if the request "meets the criteria of the (U.N.) Charter," which requires that applicants be "peace-loving" and accept its provisions.

Araud said experts will review technical aspects of the request for the first time next week, and indicated there would be further meetings before the committee reports back to the 15-member Security Council.

U.N. diplomats say the membership committee needs only a simple majority ? or eight of the 15 votes ? to approve the request and send it back to the council.

"We hope that the experts will deal with this part of the exercise in a short period of time," Palestinian envoy Riyad Mansour told reporters.

After the meeting, Indian Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri underscored his country's support of the Palestinians' bid, saying his country was the first non-Arab state to grant recognition of a Palestinian state when it did so in 1988.

Puri said the committee on the admission of new states "should report to the Security Council that the Palestinian application for membership be recommended to the General Assembly."

The Indian ambassador to the U.N. said the Palestinians' membership application "is not incompatible with, nor does it exclude, direct negotiations between the parties to resolve the final status issues."

The committee meeting came exactly one week after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas took his people's quest for independence to U.N. headquarters, sidestepping peace negotiating efforts that have foundered for nearly two decades.

The request for U.N. membership was made over the objections of the U.S. and Israel, which insist on a negotiated peace agreement first.

As the process of incremental steps plods forward at the U.N., the international community is searching for a formula to bring Israel and the Palestinians back to negotiations.

The Quartet of Mideast mediators ? the U.S., European Union, Russia and U.N. ? last week called for a resumption of peace talks without preconditions and a target for a final agreement by the end of 2012.

In order for a state to become a U.N. member, its application must be recommended by the Security Council and then approved by the General Assembly by a two-thirds vote of its 193 members.

For the Palestinians, winning approval in the Security Council currently poses an insurmountable hurdle. That's because a resolution requires nine "yes" votes and no veto by a permanent member ? and the U.S. has already declared it will veto any resolution if needed.

Nonetheless, the Palestinians are trying to get backing from nine council nations to demonstrate their international support.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki said Thursday that his delegation has secured eight votes in its favor.

Malki said from Ramallah, West Bank, on Friday that Abbas will visit two council nations ? Colombia and Portugal ? next week seeking support for the bid. Colombia has said it's likely to abstain, while Portugal has indicated it is undecided.

4 dead, 6 missing as ship runs aground off Taiwan (AP)

TAIPEI, Taiwan ? Four crew members died Monday and six went missing after a Panama-registered cargo vessel ran aground in heavy seas off the northern Taiwanese coast, the coast guard said.

Another 11 sailors were rescued, it said.

The Taiwanese Defense Ministry said the ship with 21 crew members broke into two after colliding into rocks off the shore of the port of Keelung in the early hours of Monday morning. The crew members' nationalities were not known.

The ministry said rescuers were looking for the missing.

Taiwan has been under the influence of Typhoon Nalgae throughout the weekend. The storm pummeled the northern Philippines on Saturday before moving toward China's Hainan island.

Rays rookie Moore dominates Texas in ALDS opener (AP)

ARLINGTON, Texas ? When Matt Moore walked into Tampa Bay's clubhouse for the first time a few weeks ago, catcher Kelly Shoppach knew who it was only because of the nameplate over the young pitcher's locker.

"And I said, `Who is Matt Moore?' I thought we had an Adam Moore in our system," Shoppach said, laughing. "Nobody will forget his name now."

The Texas Rangers certainly won't.

Making only his second major league start, the 22-year-old rookie pitched two-hit ball Friday and the improbable Tampa Bay Rays opened the playoffs with a 9-0 victory over the defending AL champions.

Tampa Bay, which needed every out of the regular season simply to overcome a nine-game deficit to Boston in the last 3 1/2 weeks and win the wild card, had the ultimate wild card for the opener of the AL division series rematch in the hard-throwing lefty who was still in the minor leagues when the Rays began their late push.

No pitcher had ever started a postseason opener with only one previous career start until the seemingly unfazed Moore took the mound at Rangers Ballpark less than 22 hours after being told he was pitching in the playoffs less than three months after pitching in the Futures game during the All-Star break.

"They didn't give me a whole lot of time to get nervous and to think about it a lot," Moore said. "I didn't want to be out of it before I was in it. ... I tried to be as normal, as normal and as calm as possible. And it was just a matter of getting comfortable, and there on it was throwing strikes."

Moore had thrown only 9 1-3 innings in the majors before, including 11 strikeouts in five scoreless innings against the Yankees eight days earlier in his only other start. He was smiling by the late innings, and greeted by hugs and high-fives in the dugout after his last pitch ? he threw 98 in all, 62 for strikes.

The Rays go for a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five ALDS with James Shields on the mound Saturday night against left-hander Derek Holland. The Tampa Bay right-hander allowed only one run in 17 innings while beating Texas twice this season.

Texas, which went to its first World Series last season, won a franchise-record 96 games and finished the regular season with a six-game winning streak just to have home-field advantage.

Yet, the Rangers and Rays have picked up where they left off last postseason, when the visiting team won every game in their five-game series. That's the only time that has ever happened in the majors.

"That's why the playoffs are so fun. You don't know what's going to happen," said Josh Hamilton, who had Texas' only two hits off Moore. "Momentum, coming in from the season, is really shut down until you start playing the games in the postseason. Because you don't know. Each game counts for itself. We're not trying to win a division any more, we're trying to win one game at a time."

Moore took a deep breath before his first delivery, then was in total control for a team that already had played a month's worth of tense games.

"You can't be more impressed. What he did tonight was spectacular," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

"But these guys made it really easy for me, putting up those numbers," Moore said. "It was just a matter of throwing strikes and getting out of the innings as fast as possible."

Shoppach homered twice and drove in five runs, Johnny Damon also homered and Tampa Bay dominated the whole way behind Moore, who struck out six and walked two against the AL's top-hitting team.

"We have been hearing about him for years. I was just confused on his name," Shoppach said. "There is a lot of excitement for him to be here. We actually said the first of September, why isn't he here yet? We could use him. But he's handled himself well."

Rookie Brandon Gomes and Wade Davis both pitched a hitless inning in relief to complete the first shutout in Rays postseason history.

It was a day of memorable pitching in Texas, where 6-year-old Cooper Stone tossed a ceremonial first pitch to Hamilton and then shared two hugs with his favorite player.

This was Cooper's first game at Rangers Ballpark since July 7, when his firefighter father fell to his death trying to catch a ball thrown to him by Hamilton. Cooper went to the mound Friday with his widowed mother, Jenny, and Rangers president Nolan Ryan, the Hall of Fame pitcher.

After Wilson hit Ben Zobrist with a pitch in the second, Damon followed with a two-run homer to right that put the Rays ahead to stay. What looked like a high popup by Damon just kept carrying and hit the front-row rail just beyond the 8-foot wall.

"Johnny hitting that home run early kind of gave us all a chance to just breathe," said Shoppach, who is from nearby Fort Worth.

Shoppach, a .176 hitter in the regular season, followed with a single and later scored on a hit by Matt Joyce for a 3-0 lead. An inning later, Shoppach hit a 410-foot homer to straightaway center. Tampa led 8-0 after Damon reached on a two-out error by third baseman Adrian Beltre in the fifth and Shoppach followed with a 415-foot homer to left.

"Once (Moore) got the lead, the kid took it to the finish line," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "He is a special kid. He really is."

Wilson had never lost to the Rays ? until Friday, when he gave up eight runs (six earned) and seven hits over five innings. He had thrown a five-hitter at Tampa on Sept. 6 for his first career shutout.

His worst outing of the season came at the most inopportune time.

"It was just some bad location," Wilson said. "Today was rare, very rare. If you put today up against the rest of my games this year, it's like a very rare game. ... I had some decent speed on the ball, my cutter was OK, but my location was bad."

NOTES: Moore, an eighth-round draft pick in 2007, was 12-3 with 210 strikeouts over 155 innings in 27 starts combined at Double-A and Triple-A before being recalled by Tampa on Sept. 12. He was eligible for the postseason because he was a roster replacement for Alex Cobb, the right-hander who was put on the disabled list Aug. 7 because of season-ending surgery on his rib cage. ... Holland (16-5) is 10-1 his last 15 starts. ... Texas was shut out in a postseason game for the seventh time, including twice last year in the World Series.

'Fried Egg' Nebula Cracks Open Rare Hypergiant Star (SPACE.com)

First came the "Running Chicken" nebula, and now comes a cosmic "Fried Egg." A European telescope has captured the best image yet of one of the rarest classes of stars in our universe, and astronomers playfully point out that the cosmic scene resembles an egg white around a yolky center.

The European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope, at the Paranal Observatory in Chile, spotted the monster star, which is called a yellow hypergiant. The star is located about 13,000 light-years away from Earth, but is the closest yellow hypergiant found to date.

The new image, which ESO scientists dubbed the "Fried Egg Nebula" shows the central hypergiant star, officially known as IRAS 17163-3907, surrounded by a huge dusty double shell, making up the egg yolk and white. [See the photo and video of the "Fried Egg" nebula]

The massive star is so large it has a width that is about 1,000 times larger than our sun. In fact, if the Fried Egg nebula were placed at the center of our solar system, the Earth would be positioned deep within the star itself. The orbit of the planet Jupiter would be just above the star's surface.

But that's not all. The much larger neighboring nebula would engulf all the planets, dwarf planets, and even some comets that orbit way out beyond the orbit of Neptune. [Top 10 Star Mysteries]

The new observations from the Very Large Telescope show that the Fried Egg nebula also shines approximately 500,000 times brighter than the sun.?

"This object was known to glow brightly in the infrared but, surprisingly, nobody had identified it as a yellow hypergiant before," Eric Lagadec, of the European Southern Observatory, said in a statement. Lagadec led the team that produced the new images.

The new observations of IRAS 17163-3907 were made using the Very Large Telescope's VISIR infrared camera. The image's release comes a week after ESO officials unveiled a photo of the so-called "Running Chicken" nebula, which got its nickname from the birdlike shape that some people detect in its brightest region. [Gallery: Strange Nebula Shapes, What Do You See?]?

The images are the first of the Fried Egg nebula to clearly show the material around it and reveal two nearly perfectly spherical shells.

Yellow hypergiants are stars in an extremely active phase of their evolution. These rare stars experience a series of dynamic and explosive events that cause the star to eject four times the mass of the sun in only a few hundred years.

The spewed material from these explosions, which consists of dust and gas, make up the extensive double shell around the nebula.

The extreme activity of yellow hypergiants shows that the star will likely die an explosive death, potentially as one of the next supernova explosions to occur in our galaxy. Supernovas blast much-needed chemicals into the surrounding interstellar environment, and the resulting shock waves often spur the creation of newborn stars.
