Banking - Mexico - Remittances to Mexico mark year-long decline in June

Remittances to Mexico fell 7.2% to US$1.95bn in June from US$2.1bn in the year-ago month, according to figures from central bank Banco de M?xico.

The majority of June remittances (US$1.91bn) were sent through electronic transfers, followed by cash and in specie transfers (US$25.4mn) and money orders (US$13mn).

June figures mark a 12-month consecutive trend of year-on-year declines in Mexico-bound remittances. However June remittances declined less than the 8.4% forecast by analysts, local paper El Universal said in a report.

As Mexico's second longest period of remittance decline, the trend is preceded by the 17 months of decline Mexico experienced between November 2008 and March 2010 during the financial crisis.

Alejandro Cervantes, analyst for Mexican financial group Banorte-IXE, expects the trend to reverse in line with favorable changes in the US labor market, the paper reported him as saying.

Mexico is the world's third largest remittances receiver, preceded by India and China, according to the World Bank.

slideshow Club Y and the Northwest Georgia Junior Golf Association teamed up this past week for a two-day, 36-hole tournament at Fields Ferry, and while they didn?t see the number of participants they had hoped for, both organizations still considered it an overall success.

The tournament was the NWJGA Championship and was open to golfers 11-18 years old. It was played on Tuesday and Wednesday with the golfers being divided into different flights based on age.

Roger Rigney, the Club Y President said he was pleased with how the tournament turned out.

?We are happy to be a part of the Northwest Georgia Golf Association, especially being the first year, it?s a starting point, and I hope it will develop into something that we can do on a regular basis,? said Rigney. ?Club Y, that?s what we do. we try to sponsor any youth activites that we are able to.

?For the first year we are very happy with the turnout we have had. We are hoping it will be bigger and better next year, but it has started out well.?

The field was comprised of close to 25 boys and girls junior golfers from around the area. The entry fee was $50 per golfer, and the original goal was to have as many as 80 golfers in the field for the tournament.

?It was a decent response,? said the NWJGA?s Tommy Curtis. ?We would?ve liked to have more, but with it being so late in the summer and band camps and school getting going, there were a few kids that couldn?t play.

?The timing could?ve been better, but this is our first year. As long as this goes on, it will get even better and we will have a better turnout. We really have to thank the CLUB Y. They have gone above and beyond helping us with this.?

Winners in the 13-16 girls division were Dallas Vaughn (Flight 1) and Maggie Sullens (Flight 2). Boys winners were Taylor Gresham (12-under), Cole Ingram (13-14 Flight 1), Dylan Long (13-14 Flight 2) and Kurt Ingram (15-17 year old). (For full results and more photos, see page 2B of Saturday's Calhoun Times.)

The NWJGA holds tournaments around the area throughout the summer and fall and tries to make it more affordable for parents to afford to have their kids play. Curtis, his wife June and his son, Sam, started the association three years ago in order to get more local kids playing and interested in the game. They got the idea from the Rome Junior Golf Association which holds affordable tournaments each Monday throughout the summer for junior golfers.

In it?s three years, the NWGJA has had kids participate from Gordon, Bartow, Whitfield and Walker Counties as well as a few from as far as Cleveland, Tenn.

?We have put together a non-profit group kind of like what a lot of people do with baseball teams,? said Curtis. ?Basically, all we try to do is get kids out on the course to play and try to break even.

?There are some great players, and what?s great to see over the last three years, we have seen some kids who were not putting up very good scores that are now putting up really good scores. You see the improvement and this helps the middle school and high school golf programs.?

With the players $50 registration fee, the NWGJA provided lunch, green fees, range balls and awards for the tournament.

Curtis told the players and parents after the completion of the tournament that it will ?hopefully be an annual event,? and he thanked the parents for letting the kids come play and improve as golfers.

Discarded NYC theater prop sparks bomb scare

(AP) ? A New York City playwright who directed a show called the "American Suicide Bomber Association" unwitting sparked a bomb scare when he threw a prop from the production into the trash at his home.

Playwright Ethan Fishbane tells The New York Post (http://bit.ly/16Pymas ) he wasn't thinking when he discarded the fake bomb while cleaning out his Manhattan apartment Tuesday.

A building superintendent saw the prop the next morning and called police.

That brought out the bomb squad.

It didn't take long for investigators to figure out what had happened.

Fishbane says he was stunned when officers knocked on his door, but he praised the department for its quick response, saying it was "wholly appropriate."

The 23-year-old wrote the play while attending New York University's Tisch School of The Arts.

Obama administration overturns ban on some iPad, iPhones

The Obama administration has overturned a U.S. trade panel's ban on the sale of some older iPhones and iPads, reversing a ruling that had favored Samsung Electronics Co Ltd over Apple Inc in their long-running patent battles.

?

The U.S. International Trade Commission in June banned the import or sale of the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 3G and iPad 2 3G distributed by AT&T Inc , saying the devices infringed a patent owned by the South Korean electronics giant.

Ban decision overturned..

?

?

U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman on Saturday vetoed the ban, saying his decision was in part based on its "effect on competitive conditions in the U.S. economy and the effect on U.S. consumers." He said Samsung could continue to pursue its case through the courts.

?

Samsung said it was "disappointed" at the lifting of the ban. "The ITC's decision correctly recognized that Samsung has been negotiating in good faith and that Apple remains unwilling to take a license," it said in a statement.

?

Apple welcomed the news and applauded the administration "for standing up for innovation." It added, "Samsung was wrong to abuse the patent system in this way."

?

The Apple products targeted by the ITC ban are more than a year old, though some models such as the iPhone 4 remain solid sellers. Apple sells more than 100 million iPhones annually, but it does not break down sales by models.

?

Apple and Samsung have been waging a global patent war since 2010, filing multiple lawsuits against each other over the design and functionality of their devices.

?

This ITC ban is specific to a Samsung patent on technology that allows devices to transmit multiple services simultaneously and correctly through 3G wireless technology.

?

Such patents are called "standard essential patents" and they cover technology that must be used to comply with standards set by industry organizations.

?

The Obama administration has been pressing for most infringements of standard essential patents to be punished by monetary fines instead of sales injunctions.

?

Froman on Saturday said the ITC should thoroughly examine the public interest ramifications of its rulings in disputes over standard essential patents.

?

Designed to be a trade panel, the ITC has become a popular venue for patent lawsuits because it acts relatively quickly and can order import bans, which are more difficult to get from district courts.

While the ITC was created to ensure that U.S. companies can compete fairly against imports, a number of foreign companies with U.S. manufacturing plants have filed patent complaints with the agency. Samsung has a plant in Austin, Texas.

?

ITC cases can be appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and from there to the Supreme Court.

?

Apple has a parallel complaint filed against Samsung at the ITC, accusing the South Korean company of copying the iPhone and iPad. An ITC judge in that case found that Samsung had violated four out of six patents listed in the complaint. A final decision is due in August.

?

Samsung makes phones that run on Google Inc's Android operating software, the market leader. Apple has also sued other Android phone makers including HTC Corp for patent infringement.

Union challenges The Warehouse living wage claims

Unions say many workers at The Warehouse will not benefit from the company's new Career Retailer Wage concept.

Founder Sir Stephen Tindall and Warehouse Group chief executive Mark Powell told Q+A this morning that the decision to introduce a Career Retailer Wage (CRW) was influenced by the Living Wage Campaign.

The CRW could see Warehouse staff receive an increase to their overall package to anywhere between $18.50 and $20 per hour, dependent on their role.

But First Union, which represents 2000 Warehouse Group workers, says while it is great long service is to be recognised for some people, the Career Retailer Wage only applies after 5,000 hours service.

The union says thousands of Warehouse workers will take many years to reach 5000 hours.

"It's been a long time since The Warehouse employed shop workers on 40 hours, the union says. "Most are part time workers - it's not uncommon to only have two shifts a week."

First Union says almost all Warehouse workers want and need more hours and for a part timer on 25 hours per week, 5000 hours is nearly four years away.

The full Career Retailer Wage is discretionary to management and also on stores meeting budget targets.?

The union says checkouts, nightfill and shopfloor staff are by far the largest group of workers at The Warehouse and under the company proposal, their rates would be going from 14.97 to 15.19, and then 15.27 in February

"This is a far cry from the 'Living Wage' being promoted by the company," the union says, adding that it is very supportive of getting retail work the career pathway it needs.

Tindall unfazed by low wage attraction

Meanwhile, Sir Stephen Tindall, is backing Australian companies moving parts of their operations to New Zealand, even though low wages are part of the attraction to move here.

When asked by Q+A host Susan Wood if he was concerned that Australia was chasing our low-wage society, Sir Stephen said he was not worried.

"I'm not concerned at the moment, because I think what it's going to do is give a lot of people in New Zealand jobs - those that are not getting them at the moment," he said.

"We do need more people in work in New Zealand, and we've been losing lots of people to Australia. So initially I think it's good.

"I think as we build our economy, which I think we will against Australia, then wages will rise. And if they keep having the dearth of a problem that they've got with mining, theirs will come down again," Sir Stephen said.

Career Retailer Wage

Mr Powell said the CRW decision is both a moral and business decision.

"It's part of an overall strategy that we're implementing at The Warehouse to completely change the business going forward," he said.

"And we're investing in our stores hugely, we're investing in our products, we've revamped our promotions."

However, Mr Powell said, retail is ultimately "a people business" and a few years ago the company started asking how it could have "the most engaged people" of any retail business in New Zealand.

Wages are part of that, and the career retailer wage came from that idea, he said.

Mr Powell said The Warehouse had asked itself: "How do we make retail a great career that people want to stay in, feel engaged? And if our team members in retail engage, they'll serve the customers better and that will help with growth."

The move is costing The Warehouse Group $2 million to $2.5 million a year.

PacNet #52R - China?s Great Power Mentality and Its Diplomatic Vision for the 21st Century

As China embarks on a renewed path of ?peaceful development? with its goal of creating a ?harmonious world? under its fifth generation leaders, observers are keen to see how the most important bilateral relationship of our time ? the United States and China ? will evolve. China?s leaders view the first 20 years of this century as a ?period of strategic opportunity? to create a ?moderately well-off society,? acknowledged in the 18th National Congress of the CPC with slogans such as the ?Great Revitalization of the Chinese Nation? and the ?Chinese Dream.? Likewise, younger generations of Chinese people have been raised to believe forecasts from Goldman Sachs and the IMF that predict China will become the number one economic power in coming years.

Minstrel show: Ariz. Democrat releases photo of himself with darkened, more Hispanic face

A Democratic candidate for Arizona governor released a photograph of himself with his face digitally darkened so that he would look more Hispanic.

The candidate, Phoenix businessman Fred DuVal said he wanted show Republicans he is a ?good sport,? reports the Arizona Daily Independent.

DuVal?s stunt was a response to GOP chair Robert Graham, who had previously branded DuVal as ?the most uninteresting man in the world.? This phraseology reverses the moniker of the pitchman for Dos Equis beer, who is, of course, The Most Interesting Man in the World.

In the Dos Equis commercials, the famous beer spokesman is played by a rough-hewn, bearded character actor named Jonathan Goldsmith. He wears impeccable clothes and speaks in a deep, cultured Latino voice. He ends each ad with the tag line, ?Stay thirsty, my friends.?

In DuVal?s digitally altered photograph, the lily-white candidate does his best to look to like an imaginary Latino. He has a beard and is wearing a smoking jacket. His skin is sort of orange-brown. There?s a half-smoked cigar, an empty glass and a big candle in the foreground.

Along with the photo, DuVal?s response included a case of Dos Equis and a thank-you card that read ?Stay Desperate My Friends,? according to a blog called Arizona Eagletarian. The sender was labeled as ?The Most Electable Man in Arizona.?

DuVal sent the Photoshopped image to Graham and Chad Heyward, the executive director of the Arizona GOP.

Both sides spun the modern-day minstrel show as a huge win for their respective sides.

The Yellow Sheet Report, ?Arizona?s first and best political tip sheet,? basically judged the episode to be a win for the Democrat.

?DuVal had some fun with the Arizona Republican Party and Graham today, responding to the party?s decree that he is the ?most uninteresting man in the world? with some cerveza-based humor of his own,? the subscription-based website explained.

In a press release, DuVal said he was ?flattered? that the Republicans targeted him even before he has even wrapped up his party?s nomination.

A spokeswoman for the DuVal campaign, Leslie Sonnenklar, announced that the face-darkening stunt had netted DuVal $11,000 in donations.

Arizona Republicans disagreed.

?Painful attempts at humor, especially with racial overtones, usually backfire on candidates,? an Arizona GOP representative said.

?This is the kind of thing you might think was funny but would never do?unless you started drinking too many Dos Equis,? quipped a Republican who asked not to be identified.

Local Hispanic conservatives also had much to tell the Daily Independent.

?As a Latino, I was not offended at all by the allusion to the Dos Equis commercial guy,? Jose Borrajero, a member of the Arizona Latino Republican Association, said ?It was a very stupid prank by someone who wants to be taken seriously as a gubernatorial candidate. But one must admit: it was amusing. What is not funny is that the Democrat party has become the party of economic oppression of Latinos and other ?minorities?.

Rudy Pena, a Catholic and a self-described Reagan conservative, said the move ?reeks of a move by an insignificant org, heavily under the influence of both the Left and the consumption of ?Tequila.??

Video shows car turn balmy LA boardwalk into chaos

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Security video of a man driving into a crowd at a Los Angeles boardwalk opens with hundreds of people walking lazily or sitting at cafes before a black car suddenly appears and sends them scrambling wildly.

Restaurant manager Dennis Walker showed The Associated Press the seven-minute video of the Saturday melee that killed one person and injured 11.

It shows a young man parking the car next to the boardwalk. Minutes later he gets out wearing a baseball cap, gray shirt and white pants as he walks between the boardwalk and car for several minutes.

He then gets in and the car rapidly accelerates, screeching across a sidewalk to reach the promenade. The vehicle runs down sidewalk vendors and their booths and hits other people and objects as drives out of sight.

Longtime NBC news correspondent John Palmer dies

WASHINGTON (AP) ? John Palmer, a veteran reporter for NBC News who covered wars and Washington over a career that spanned 40 years, died Saturday after a brief illness at a Washington hospital.

Palmer's wife Nancy confirmed he died at George Washington University Hospital of pulmonary fibrosis. He was 77.

The gentlemanly Palmer worked for NBC from 1962 to 1990, and then returned to the network from 1994 until 2002.

"John was a brilliant, brave, and tireless journalist who guided viewers through many of the most significant events of the past half-century - from the early days of the civil rights movement through the tragedy of 9/11," NBC News said in a statement. "He covered five presidents and traveled to every corner of the world, always showing the empathy and compassion that helped set him apart. His kindness is remembered by all of us, and it built lasting bonds throughout our news division. "

He served as a correspondent in Chicago, Paris and Beirut, as well as at the White House. In 1980 he landed one of his biggest scoops, breaking the news of the Carter administration's failed attempt to rescue the American hostages being held in Iran. His reporting on the story brought him the Merriman Smith Memorial Award for excellence in presidential news coverage, making him the first broadcast journalist to receive that honor.

"John Palmer brought to the White House beat his foreign policy experience and a steady reassuring voice, in good times and in bad," NBC News correspondent Andrea Mitchell said in describing Palmer for a report aired Saturday evening.

It was also at NBC's Washington news bureau that Palmer met his wife, Nancy, a Nightly News producer.

In 1982 he became news anchor on the "Today" show during a highly successful period when Bryant Gumbel and Jane Pauley co-hosted, bringing a seriousness and calm to the program while often being the first newsman that millions of viewers heard from each morning. He remained there until 1989, when he was abruptly replaced by Deborah Norville, who was being groomed for a co-host role, and handed her old job on the show that preceded it, "NBC News at Sunrise." Norville succeeded Pauley shortly afterward but was herself replaced after the show's ratings suddenly dropped.

In 1986, Palmer anchored the first hours of NBC's coverage of the Challenger space shuttle disaster, as well as other special reports.

Palmer left the network in 1990 to anchor a syndicated news program, hosted the weekly "Discovery Journal" on The Discovery Channel, and anchored a daily newscast on the TV channel of the Christian Science Monitor. His interview subjects ranged from Carter and Presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan to Anwar Sadat, Jonas Salk and Chuck Yeager.

In 1994, he was invited back to NBC as a Washington correspondent.

Speaking to anchor Brian Williams on NBC sister network MSNBC upon his retirement in 2002, Palmer looked back on his tenure with satisfaction, including the access it gave him to a succession of the nation's chief executives.

"I was enriched as a kid from the East Tennessee mountains," said the Kingsport, Tenn., native, "to be able to go fishing with Jimmy Carter, to go to the movies with Ronald Reagan, and to play golf with Bill Clinton."

After exiting NBC, he continued to work in journalism, including through hosting roles on Retirement Living TV, a network dedicated to seniors.

Several of Palmer's colleagues praised him on Twitter on Saturday evening.

Major Garrett, chief White House correspondent for CBS News, described Palmer as "a brilliant, competitive, ethical and gentle man."

Susan Page, Washington bureau chief of USA Today, said she first met Palmer at the Reagan White House and described him as "one of the kindest/most joyful reporters on the beat."

NBC News reporter Chuck Todd said Palmer "epitomized professionalism at NBC News. And he was always generous with advice and counsel. A great news man."

Palmer was a graduate of Northwestern University and held a master's degree from Columbia University.

"John loved Sinatra, golf and fishing," Mitchell reported Saturday night, but she said he most treasured being a husband and father.

He and his wife Nancy have three grown daughters, one of whom is a producer for the Today show, one who works in the entertainment industry and one who is pursuing a journalism career in Washington.

When NFL Isn't Really Playing Football

Three changes in the way the National Football League plays football are helping to give us a good idea of the shape of things to come. Several months ago, the Competition Committee adopted a new rule banning ball-carriers from lowering their helmets into oncoming defenders in an attempt to break free of the tackle. (The committee also eliminated the so-called ?Tuck Rule,? which is probably the least controversial thing the committee has ever done, unless you?re a Patriots fan.) This week, the NFL announced that the Pro Bowl?the much-ballyhooed all-star game that takes place the weekend before the Super Bowl?will not have kick-offs. And new rules, the New York Times reported this week, have all but eliminated tackling during preseason camps.

Cleveland Courage Fund sees spike in donations

Hennes Paynter Communications

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight, the three Cleveland women who escaped in May after about a decade of captivity, released a thank-you video to show their appreciation to all the people who have offered their support.

By Tracy Jarrett, Writer, NBC News

The Cleveland Courage Fund topped $1.3 million on Friday, with a spike in donations after the sentencing of kidnapper Ariel Castro, according to a law firm representing the three women he held for more than a decade.

?On the heels of Thursday?s sentencing, the fund recorded a significant increase in giving ? roughly $20,000 in less than 24 hours? time,? the Jones Day law firm said in a statement.

Castro was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after abducting, imprisoning and repeatedly raping Michelle Knight, Gina DeJesus and Amanda Berry. The women were rescued from Castro?s home in May after being held captive for more than a decade.

The Cleveland Courage Fund was created by Cleveland City Council members Brian Cummins, Matt Zone and Dona Brady after the discovery of Knight, DeJesus, and Berry.

All proceeds are allocated to the wellbeing of the three women, who, according to Jones Day, ?have access to and are currently using the fund.?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to explain this. My 16 year old stepdaughter (she'll be 17 at the end of Sept, and a Junior in HS this year) started working her first summer job this year and had met quite a few new people. So older and a lot about the same age. She had gone out with a group of her coworkers to movies and things and it was never a big deal (she's quite responsible, good grades, good kid, never had any problems with her at all). Her Father and Step Mother are a little too strict and my Wife isn't strict enough (IMO) due to an overly strict upbringing herself.
Anyway two weeks ago she starts talking about some boy she works with and it becomes a thing were they're going to go to the movies (which wife said was OK) then my SD wanted him to come over and hang out one day (wife was home and I was at work) and it wasn't a big deal. Turns out that this guy is 19. When questioned about it my SD was not very forth coming with answers to questions I had ( either she didn't know or would mumble a bit). So my wife gets a call from her ex telling us this guy is actually 20 and after meeting with him says it's OK to go out with him but she can't be alone with him. I'm not OK with this at all and told both of them this and they kind of down played it. So I dig a little and come up with this guys birthday as August 13 and he's going into his Junior year of College. Can't find a year for his birth and Step daughter doesn't know. So he's either 19 going on 20 (which is pushing it) or 20 going on 21 (which is way too old to be seeing a 16 year old girl.
Anyone have any advice? I just don;t see why a guy/kid that is that old would want to date a 16 year old girl. While the only couple of reasons I can see her having is either guys her age are to immature or the fact that she can brag about her College aged boyfriend to other girls when she gets back to school. All in all I hate that my opinion does';t matter to anyone else in this matter. Sorry for my venting

Cat Attacks Birds On TV Every Single Time (VIDEO)

Look, we say this a lot, but this time we mean it. This is our new favorite cat. See, the key here is consistency. When the opening notes of this television show's theme song play, you can count on this cat to stop whatever it might be doing ? sleeping, hanging out in the cat tree ? and attack these birds each...

and...

every...

damn...

time.

And that, dear friends, is the definition of being dedicated to your craft.

Adjuvant Intraoperative Photodynamic Therapy in Head and Neck Cancer Adjuvant Intraoperative Photodynamic Therapy Adjuvant Intraoperative Photodynamic Therapy

Importance? There is an immediate need to develop local intraoperative adjuvant treatment strategies to improve outcomes in patients with cancer who undergo head and neck surgery.

Objectives? To determine the safety of photodynamic therapy with 2-(1-hexyloxyethyl)-2-devinyl pyropheophorbide-a (HPPH) in combination with surgery in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

Design, Setting, and Participants? Nonrandomized, single-arm, single-site, phase 1 study at a comprehensive cancer center among 16 adult patients (median age, 65 years) with biopsy-proved primary or recurrent resectable head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

Interventions? Intravenous injection of HPPH (4.0 mg/m2), followed by activation with 665-nm laser light in the surgical bed immediately after tumor resection.

Main Outcomes and Measures? Adverse events and highest laser light dose.

Results? Fifteen patients received the full course of treatment, and 1 patient received HPPH without intraoperative laser light because of an unrelated myocardial infarction. Disease sites included larynx (7 patients), oral cavity (6 patients), skin (1 patient), ear canal (1 patient), and oropharynx (1 patient, who received HPPH only). The most frequent adverse events related to photodynamic therapy were mild to moderate edema (9 patients) and pain (3 patients). One patient developed a grade 3 fistula after salvage laryngectomy, and another patient developed a grade 3 wound infection and mandibular fracture. Phototoxicity reactions included 1 moderate photophobia and 2 mild to moderate skin burns (2 due to operating room spotlights and 1 due to the pulse oximeter). The highest laser light dose was 75 J/cm2.

Conclusions and Relevance? The adjuvant use of HPPH-photodynamic therapy and surgery for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma seems safe and deserves further study.

Deck Bluetooth speaker by SOL Republic and Motorola offers 300-foot range, fits in a pocket

Deck Bluetooth speaker by SOL Republic and Motorola offers 300foot range, fits in a pocket

Remember that SOL Republic Bluetooth speaker that made a sneak appearance at Verizon's Droid event? Well, it's actually official now and the company wants to ensure its first foray into audio outside headphones is a success. Dubbed the Deck, the speaker is the result of a team-up between SOL and Motorola, with SOL providing its audio know-how and Motorola handling the wireless connectivity bit. The $200 speaker features a flat design that might fit into a pants pocket. Vertically positioned drivers and a side-facing port provide 360-degree sound, and an outdoor mode boosts the highs and cuts the lows if you need to fill open areas with sound.

Additionally, deck boasts a usable range of 300 feet, a sprawling distance compared to the the usual 30-foot line-of-sight limit you'll encounter on devices like the Beats Pill and Jawbone Jambox. Its Heist setting lets up to five devices connect without needing to enable a pairing mode and, like the name suggests, any user can steal the speaker by hitting play on their device. Rounding things out, you can expect roughly 10 hours of battery life, water-resistance (via a sonically-transparent bag), speakerphone functionality and a 3.5mm input / output. Interested? It costs $200 and is up for pre-order today in yellow, blue, red and "gunmetal." Shipments are expected to begin before August is over. In the meantime, you can join us after the break for our initial impressions.

Build Your Own Crossover Cable, USB to Ethernet Extender, and More

We've discussed the different types of ethernet cables and what they're good for, but they're also easy to hack and re-wire to fit whatever need you may have. Before you start stripping and twisting wires though, you need to understand how they work. This video guide walks you through it.

The video, from our friends at Tinkernut, starts off with the beginnings of the internet first, and gets into how ethernet cables work around the one minute mark. If you're already familiar with cable wiring, you can skip to 1:45 to get right to the good stuff, namely how to build your own crossover cable from a regular ethernet cable, how to build a multi-network connector that'll let you plug in one computer to two different networks, and how to build a USB/ethernet cable that you could use to turn your entire house into a USB extension cable, if your house is wired for ethernet, for example.

Of course, some of this may be old hat and you can always go out and buy a crossover cable or whatever you need, but learning how they work and what you can do with the cables you have lying around at home is always a good idea.

Tsvangirai denounces Zimbabwe vote as 'huge farce'

By MacDonald Dzirutwe

HARARE (Reuters) - Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai dismissed Zimbabwe's election as a farce on Thursday after his rival President Robert Mugabe's party claimed a landslide victory that would secure another five years in power for Africa's oldest head of state.

Speaking at the headquarters of his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), a downbeat Tsvangirai said Wednesday's vote should be rejected as invalid because of polling day irregularities and vote-rigging by 89-year-old Mugabe's ZANU-PF party.

"This has been a huge farce," he told reporters. "In our view, that election is null and void." He did not take questions, leaving it unclear whether he or his party will mount any kind of legal challenge.

The conflicting claims from the two main competing camps came before Zimbabwe's Electoral Commission had issued any official results, and raise the prospect of an acrimonious post-election dispute.

There are fears that this could spill over into violence, as happened after the last election in 2008 when 200 MDC supporters were killed in the wake of a first-round defeat for Mugabe, who has ruled since independence from Britain in 1980.

Wednesday's poll was peaceful but the largest independent observer group said it was seriously compromised because of voter registration problems that may have disenfranchised up to a million people - a fifth of all Zimbabweans of voting age.

Releasing unofficial results early is illegal, and police had said they would arrest anybody who did this.

However, a senior source in Mugabe's ZANU-PF party, who asked not to be named, told Reuters less than 15 hours after the polls closed that the result was already clear.

"We've taken this election. We've buried the MDC. We never had any doubt that we were going to win," the source said, but gave no vote numbers.

If confirmed, Mugabe's victory is likely to mean five more years of troubled relations with the West, where the former liberation fighter is regarded as a ruthless despot responsible for serious human rights abuses and wrecking the economy.

Asked on the eve of the polls if he was fit enough to last in office until the age of 94, Mugabe joked about the reports of his imminent death that occasionally surface in the media.

"According to Europe and perhaps America, I died. I don't know how many times I died," he said. "But never would they say I have resurrected. I'm not dead yet."

CONTRADICTORY ASSESSMENTS

Western election observers were barred from entering the southern African country, which has rich reserves of minerals such as diamonds, chrome, coal and platinum.

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, head of an African Union (AU) monitoring team, said on Wednesday the polls appeared to be "peaceful, orderly and free and fair" - a stance he reiterated on state television after saying goodbye to Mugabe late on Thursday.

"I have been able to witness an election that is free and fair as we could see it," he said.

His assessment was sharply at odds with that of non-government organizations closely following the elections.

The Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN), the leading domestic monitoring body, said large numbers of people had been turned away from polling stations in MDC strongholds.

It also cast doubt on the authenticity of the voters' roll, noting that 99.97 percent of voters in the countryside - Mugabe's main source of support - were registered, against just 67.94 percent in the mostly pro-Tsvangirai urban areas.

In all, 6.4 million people, nearly half the population, had been registered to vote.

"It is not sufficient for elections to be peaceful for elections to be credible," ZESN chairman Solomon Zwana told a news conference. "They must offer all citizens... an equal opportunity to vote."

In a statement issued after his brief public appearance, Tsvangirai said the "shoddy manner" in which the election had been conducted would plunge the country into a serious crisis.

MDC IN DISARRAY

Several political sources told Reuters that many of the MDC's top leadership had lost their parliamentary seats, leaving in disarray a 14-year-old political grouping backed by financial and logistical support from Western governments.

Whatever the verdict from the AU and Southern African Development Community (SADC), of which Zimbabwe is a member, the outcome is likely to face intense scrutiny outside Africa, where dislike of Mugabe runs deep.

The United States, which has sanctions in place against Mugabe and his inner circle, expressed concerns in advance about the election's credibility, citing persistent pro-ZANU-PF bias in the state media and partisan security forces.

The view from Brussels, London and Washington is key to the future of Zimbabwe's economy, which is still struggling with the aftermath of a decade-long slump and hyperinflation that ended in 2009 when the worthless Zimbabwe dollar was scrapped.

However, if the vote meets with the broad approval of regional observers, it will be hard for the West to ignore it without creating a diplomatic ruckus.

"If they step up sanctions, they will have to go on record as rejecting the AU's and SADC's election evaluation and that will put them in a tight spot politically," said Mark Rosenburg, an analyst at the Eurasia Group political consultancy .

In March, the European Union suspended most sanctions after Zimbabwean voters approved a new constitution limiting presidential powers, opening the way for the July 31 election.

The International Monetary Fund agreed in June to monitor Zimbabwe's programs until the end of the year, moving Harare a step closer to clear its billions of dollars of debt arrears.

TERRE HAUTE, Indiana ? Terre Haute's parks department has received about $1 million in a settlement with a chemical company over damage that a weed killer caused to dozens of trees at a city golf course.

The city was preparing to join a class-action lawsuit against DuPont Co. over the herbicide Imprelis until reaching the settlement. The Tribune-Star reports (http://bit.ly/18WdOmz ) the city attorney says nearly 90 trees were damaged at the Rea Park golf course.

City officials plan to use the money to remove and replace the trees, with any remaining money going into a new fund for park projects.

The Environmental Protection Agency ordered DuPont to halt sales of Imprelis in 2011 because of complaints that it was damaging trees, particularly evergreens such as Norway spruce and white pine.

Performance reviews: 12 pitfalls to avoid ? Business Management ...

employee performance reviewYou know the drill. An employee?s evaluation meeting is approaching and you?re all set. You?ve got your detailed notes, you?ve set the time, reserved the room. You?ll establish the tone, show respect and steer the conversation.

But here's a list of common traps that can trip up even the most-prepared manager. Such blunders can not only deflate the morale of an employee, but also plant the seeds for a lawsuit down the road.

  1. Using stereotypes rather than first-hand observations (e.g., rating male em??ployees higher than female employees in leadership skills based on gender alone).
  2. Letting personal feelings influence the assessment (e.g., rating employees favorably because they are friendly with the manager outside of work; rating em??ployees poorly because they?ve previously butted heads with the manager).
  3. Rating all employees as average. Taking the easy way out will ultimately drive away top performers and encourage poor performers to stay at their same low performance level.
  4. Inflating the ratings of poor performers. Some managers assume an in??flated rating will motivate employees to improve their behavior. But most do so to avoid having a confrontation or because they don?t know how to correct their em??ployee?s problem behavior.?Ignoring employee problems only allows the problems to grow.
  5. Relying only?on recent performance.?The review should cover the entire review period (usually 12 months) and should address the employee?s growth (or lack thereof) over that period.
  6. Equating long tenure with positive performance. An assumption that an em??ployee has been with the company for a long time because he or she is a good worker can be erroneous.?Managers should be on the lookout for veteran employees who are actually stuck in a rut and may be content to simply ?get by? instead of consciously trying to excel.
  7. Basing employee ratings on the manager?s own ratings. Some ?managers assume that their status alone makes them the hands-down top performer in their department. So if they receive an average overall rating, they will not let their employees? ratings exceed average.
  8. Putting too much emphasis on how employees stack up against other employees rather than on how they fare against objective performance standards and expectations. Using forced rankings or ranking on a bell curve can result in good performers being unfairly rated as poor.
  9. Failing to explain reasons for the ratings. An appraisal form?with no comment fields completed is unacceptable. So, too, are comments that aren?t specific. Managers should always provide concrete examples that back up their ratings.
  10. Making backhanded compliments, e.g., ?You did a great job on the?Tucker account, Jill, especially for your age.?
  11. Focusing on personal characteristics and not on behaviors. Managers are not supposed to be judging employees as human beings; they are to evaluate employees? job performance and workplace behaviors.? Areas to focus on: time management skills, teamwork, professionalism, organizational skills, communication, judgment, job knowledge, initiative, and dependability.
  12. Interpreting motives behind behavior, instead of just stating the behavior, e.g., ?Shane isn?t committed to the job. That?s why he was late to work 21 times.? Stick with objective facts.

Fidelity Contrafund Cuts Apple Inc. (AAPL) For Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA)

Fidelity?s Contrafund, Apple Inc. (AAPL)?s biggest active shareholder, has again reduced its position in the company, bringing it down to third place in the fund?s portfolio. Contrafund snapped up more shares of Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA) during the second quarter though, raising its position 59 percent from May to June.

Fidelity?s Contrafund continued to trim its stake in Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) during the first six months of the year, cutting it 28 percent. Will Danoff, manager of the well-known fund, said he cut its stake in the company because of its ?slowing growth profile.?

Tesla and Apple Contrafund

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) is now the fund?s largest holding with about 6 percent of its net assets in the company.?Berkshire Hathaway Inc (NYSE:BRK.A) (NYSE:BRK.B) is in second place on Contrafund?s portfolio.

Contrafund still Apple?s biggest active shareholder

Reuters? Tim McLaughlin reports that even though Danoff greatly reduced his stake in Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) he is still the iPhone maker?s biggest active shareholder. The only funds with larger stakes are passive exchange-traded and index funds.

Thomson Reuters data shows that at the end of June, Contrafund held 8.3 million shares, which were worth about $3.3 billion. At the end of last year, the fund owned almost 11.6 million shares of the stock. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is now Contrafund?s third largest holding.

Contrafund loses on Apple, wins on Tesla

Danoff said that during the June quarter he bought more shares of Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA), a company they believe ?was fundamentally reengineering the automobile for the first time in decades.? The firm raised its Tesla holdings 59 percent in June from May, according to Benzinga?s Matthew Kanterman. As of the end of June, Contrafund?s position in Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) was worth $337 million.

While shares of Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) have been rising steadily since the beginning of the year, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has fallen about 15 percent and is far below the September high of $705 per share. The falling value of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has of course had a negative impact on Contrafund?s performance this year to date. During the second quarter, it returned 2.05 percent, compared to the 2.91 percent advance recorded by the S&P 500.

However, Danoff continues to have a steady track record. Contrafund?s annual returns have averaged 7.35 percent, which is 3.11 percentage points ahead of the S&P 500?s annual return. His bet on Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) is paying off so far as the stock has climbed 387 percent in the last 12 months.

Inbee Park begins her quest for history

A view of the clubhouse, left, ahead of the Women's British Open golf championship on the Old Course at St Andrews, Scotland, Wednesday July 31, 2013. (AP Photo/Scott Heppell)

(AP) ? On a gray morning at the home of golf, Inbee Park set off on her bid to make history Thursday in the Women's British Open.

The 25-year-old from South Korea already has won three majors this year. She is trying to become the first golfer, male or female, to win four in one season.

It was only fitting that Park, dressed in a black rain suit, hit her opening tee shot in front of the Royal & Ancient clubhouse at St. Andrews. With a slow, measured back swing, she drilled a low tee shot toward the Swilcan Bridge on the left side of the fairway. It's the hardest fairway to miss in golf.

The challenge is the Old Course over the next four days, not to mention dozens of players who are trying to stop this amazing run even though they appreciate what Park has done.

"I'd love to be the spoiler," Stacy Lewis said.

It was unusual for Park to have such an early tee time ? 7:03 a.m. in Scotland ? for such a big moment. Then again, it was just after 3 p.m. in Seoul. With heavy air and a light rain, there were only about 50 fans holding umbrellas behind the tee and about 20 yards down the right side to watch her tee off.

Park wasted no time getting off to a great start.

She holed a 7-foot birdie putt on the opening hole and then showed why she's considered among the best putters in women's golf. With perfect pace, her 30-foot birdie putt dropped into the center of the cup on No. 3 and she added an 18-foot birdie putt on the next hole after an approach that gave her a flat line between two ridges. Five holes into this journey, she was already 3 under par.

With a light rain and hardly any wind, conditions were perfect for scoring. Among other early starters, Brittany Lincicome was 3 under through eight holes and Rikako Morita was 2 under through eight. Ai Miyazato was 2 under through six. Defending champion Jiyai Shin wasn't teeing off till just before noon.

Arnold Palmer had won the Masters and U.S. Open in 1960 and was on his way to the British Open ? held at St. Andrews that year ? when he created the idea of a modern Grand Slam comprised of the four professional majors.

Palmer's dream ended with a runner-up finish. No one has achieved it, male or female. Five players have made it halfway ? Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods on the PGA Tour, Mickey Wright, Pat Bradley and Annika Sorenstam on the LPGA Tour.

No one has come as far as Park, a 25-year-old from South Korea with a pure putting stroke, a sweet smile and an even demeanor.

She has been the talk of the gray, old town this week in the home of golf, whether players and fans have marveled at what she has done in the majors or debated whether it would be a Grand Slam if she were to win this week.

In a peculiar turn of events, the LPGA Tour decided this year to designate the Evian Championship in France as a fifth major. It brings to mind Jeff Sluman a decade ago, when where was chatter about The Players Championship becoming a fifth major in men's golf.

"When you go to Denny's and order the Grand Slam breakfast, they don't give you five things, do they?" Sluman said. "They give you four."

Denny's is an American restaurant. The correlation of a Grand Slam and four items is distinctively American ? in baseball, it clears the bases and scores four runs.

The Grand Slam in golf was first mentioned in 1930 when Bobby Jones won the four biggest events of his era ? the British Open, U.S. Open, British Amateur and U.S. Amateur. The term came from contract bridge ? winning all 13 tricks ? or a clean sweep.

Slam or not, there is little debate that Park can do something no one else has in the modern game.

"It's pretty incredible to win the first three," Woods said Wednesday at the Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio. "And the way she did it ... executing, and it seemed like she just is making everything. ... It's really neat to see someone out there and doing something that no one has ever done, so that's pretty cool."

Karrie Webb posed the question another way while walking the streets of St. Andrews one morning.

"If a guy were to win all four majors, you'd call it the Grand Slam," Webb said. "If Inbee were to win five majors, would that be the same thing?"

Whatever the case, all eyes were on Park.

She won the Kraft Nabisco Championship in the spring by four shots. She won the LPGA Championship in a playoff over Catriona Matthew. And last month, she sailed to a four-shot victory in the U.S. Women's Open.

On a course dripping with history, Park has a chance to make more.

"I think she can do it," said Se Ri Pak, whose win at the U.S. Women's Open in 1998 inspired an entire nation ? Park included ? of golfers in South Korea. "She's dominating. Her game is strong. Her confidence is strong. All the attention is on her. Everyone thinks she can do it."

The Wrist & Repetitive Strain Injuries | Hand Therapy & Occupational ...

The wrist joins the hand to the forearm. It is able to move forward and back, side-to-side, and in circular movements. This variety of motion allows the hand to reach objects and function in a wide range of motion. In addition, a strong and stable wrist is important during grip activities. The wrist is a complex joint where the two long bones of the forearm meet the eight small carpal bones of the wrist. These carpal bones are essentially arranged in two rows of 4 bones. The eight small wrist bones then meet the five long finger bones in the palm of the hand. Most of the muscles that move the wrist, fingers and thumb are located in the forearm. The tendons (the cords that connect muscle to bone) that bend and straighten the wrist and the fingers must cross through the wrist joint on their way from the elbow towards the hand. Many of the repetitive strain injuries associated with computer work occur at the wrist. In fact, according to the National Occupation Research Agenda for Musculoskeletal Disorders, the most frequently reported upper-extremity musculoskeletal disorders affect the hand and wrist region.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most commonly diagnosed nerve injury in the arm. The nerves are the power cords for the arms, providing strength to the muscles and sensation to areas of skin. Carpal tunnel syndrome is the compression of the median nerve as the wrist as it passes from the neck to the fingers. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can cause pain at the base of the hand and in the bulky muscles in the palm right below where the thumb meets the palm. Also, people often say they feel as if they have a tight band around their wrists. Numbness in the thumb, index and middle fingers is common. The pain may feel as if it is traveling up the arm and into the shoulder and neck

Pain where the thumb meets the wrist may be caused by a tendinitis of the muscles that pull the thumb back (as if you were hitchhiking). People who type tensely are prone to developing this tendinitis as they hold their thumbs over the keyboard with tension. Pain at the base of the thumb can also be caused by arthritis in the joint where the long palm bone meets one of the tiny wrist bones of the thumb.

Tendinitis of the wrist and finger flexors (the bending/closing muscles) and extensors (the straightning muscles) and benign ganglion cysts also occur fairly frequently at the wrist.

RSI Prevention

  • Maintain a neutral wrist position.
    • The wrist should be flat in relationship to the forearm; it should not be bent forward or back.
    • For each 15 degrees that the wrist is out of alignment, the pressure on the median nerve increases.
    • The middle finger should be in alignment with the forearm, not angled toward the thumb or the small finger.
    • Wrist supports can provide proper positioning during the night.
    • Do not fight against a wrist support. It is better to remove the brace and perform activities carefully than to wear a brace that prevents necessary movement.
    • Softer, neoprene braces without the rigidity provide support but also allow for some movement and may be a better choice is the task requires wrist movement.
    • Using a wrist brace can cause the body to compensate for loss of motion by moving the elbows differently. Monitor for a shift in pain symptoms in other body areas.
  • Ergonomics
    • Using a split keyboard can align the wrists into a more neutral position.
    • Try a negative tilt of the keyboard where the row of keys closest to you is slightly higher than the row farthest away.
    • The keyboard height should allow the wrists to be neutral while the shoulders are relaxed and the elbows are open slightly greater than 90 degrees.
    • Use the upper arm to manipulate the mouse. Do not activate the mouse by using side-to-side movements of the wrist.
    • The mouse should be located by the keyboard. Do not reach forward to activate the mouse positioned on a different level than the keyboard or positioned out of easy reach.
    • Keep the fingers and thumb relaxed on the keyboard. Use only the minimum necessary force to activate the keys. Do not float the fingers stiffly over the keyboard.

Bradley Manning, the U.S. Army private who gave hundreds of thousands of secret U.S. documents to WikiLeaks, was found guilty yesterday by a military judge of more than a dozen crimes, including espionage. But Manning was acquitted of the most serious charge: ?aiding the enemy.? The acquittal, as Slate?s Fred Kaplan explains, is good news for journalists whose leak-based reports, under the government?s rationale, would have been prosecutable as capital crimes. It?s also good news for freedom, human rights, and common sense. The case for convicting Manning of aiding the enemy was preposterous.

Article 104 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, "aiding the enemy," applies to anyone who ?knowingly harbors or protects or gives intelligence to, or communicates or corresponds with or holds any intercourse with the enemy, either directly or indirectly.? Manning didn?t harbor, protect, communicate with, or give intelligence directly to al-Qaida or any other sworn enemy. So the government went after him for providing intelligence indirectly, through WikiLeaks.

You can call Manning a reckless, criminal, catastrophic idiot?and I do?but there?s no evidence that he was trying to help anybody in particular. He didn?t search for files that would be useful to specific governments. He talked about releasing secrets to the whole world. Given the sheer volume of what he downloaded and released?more than 700,000 documents??there is absolutely no way he even knew what he was giving to WikiLeaks,? prosecutors noted. ?Instead, he learned the exact details of what he compromised [at] the same time as the public and the enemy.?

Everything in the record suggests Manning was trying to inform the global public. He ?knew that WikiLeaks, and specifically Julian Assange, considered themselves the first intelligence agency for the general public,? said the prosecution. Assange, the head of Wikileaks, told Manning that his organization was ?less parochial than any Government intelligence agencies. ? It has no commercial or national interests at heart. It is only interested in the revelation of the truth.? Manning, as the prosecution pointed out, ?acknowledged that, quote, could have sold the information to Russia and China but chose not to because it's public data. And because another state would take advantage of the information and try to get some edge.?

How, then, did the government conclude that Manning?s behavior amounted to ?aiding the enemy?? By making two inane arguments: that the world includes our enemies, and that they use the Internet.

According to the prosecution?and these are all quotes from the trial transcript, courtesy of the Freedom of the Press Foundation??WikiLeaks was merely the platform which Pfc. Manning used to ensure all the information was available for the world, including the enemies of the United States.? He knew WikiLeaks ?would release it for the world to access, and he knew the world included the enemies of the United States.? Where did Manning learn this shocking fact? In high-level military training. ?The public included the enemy, and he knew that, Your Honor, as an intelligence analyst,? said the prosecution. He ?knew the entire world included the enemy, from his training.?

By the government?s reasoning, this meant treason. ?Worldwide distribution, that was his goal. Worldwide includes the enemy?Article 104.? Manning ?was a traitor? who delivered intelligence to the enemy by taking ?deliberate steps to ensure they, along with the world, received all of it.? He wanted ?the whole world, including al-Qaida and al-Qaida of the Arabian Peninsula, to see everything he compromised, and he knew they would. That, Your Honor, is the general evil intent, and that is aiding the enemy by giving intelligence.?

But our enemies don?t merely exist. They also use the Internet. In their closing arguments, prosecutors cited ?an overwhelming amount of evidence that Pfc. Manning knew that the enemy uses the Internet to gather intelligence.? In ?Advanced Individual Training,? he received ?lessons that the enemy used the internet.? He also learned from ?intelligence products of the enemy, including AQAP ? that terrorists use the Internet.? He released national secrets to WikiLeaks, ?all this while knowing, Your Honor, that our enemies, the terrorists, are using the Internet.?

You could argue that Manning had nothing to do with the latter half of this process: terrorists downloading what?s publicly available. But that would just expose your naivete about how the Internet works. It?s subtle and pernicious. According to the government, ?Pfc. Manning knew the information?s existence on the Internet would actively encourage our nation's enemy to gather and data-mine the information.? Public disclosure is active encouragement.

This rationale wouldn?t just apply to al-Qaida. It would define any disclosure, at any time, as aiding the enemy, so long as enemies exist. The United States ?faces enemies worldwide and not just in Iraq and Afghanistan,? prosecutors argued. ?Pfc. Manning provided any enemy of the United States, worldwide, this data.? He knew ?that disclosure of the information on the Internet must be avoided ? because there are many enemies, and it's a free and open society.?

The government?s case, in short, was that disclosure of classified information by a soldier who explicitly aims to inform the whole world, to an agency that explicitly aims to inform the whole world, in a medium that is accessed by the whole world, amounts to aiding the enemy, a crime punishable by death. I can think of many countries that would enthusiastically enforce such a policy. Let?s not be one of them.
