Nadal, SWilliams advance at French Open

PARIS (AP) ? Miffed about the scheduling of matches at the French Open, Rafael Nadal took the court at 11 a.m. Friday lacking his usual intensity, and it showed.

The seven-time champion had to come from behind for the second match in a row to beat Martin Klizan 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

Nadal criticized tournament organizers for scheduling his match with Klizan late on Thursday with rain predicted. The forecast proved correct, and the match was postponed a day, while Nadal's next opponent ? Fabio Fagnini ? won earlier Thursday and will have a day's rest before their match Saturday.

"That's not fair," Nadal said. "Today I was playing almost three hours on court, and my (next) opponent was watching the TV in the locker room."

Because the second-round match against Klizan was postponed a day, Nadal must win six matches in the final 10 days of the tournament to reclaim the trophy.

While Nadal's behind schedule and unhappy about it, Roger Federer and Serena Williams easily moved into the fourth round. Defending champion Maria Sharapova won a rain-interrupted match to reach the third round.

Entering the tournament, Nadal had lost only 14 sets in 53 matches at the French Open. Now he has dropped the opening set in each of the first two rounds.

When Klizan's final shot sailed out, Nadal gave the cheering crowd a relieved thumbs-up and managed a weak smile. The Spaniard blamed his patchy play on a lack of practice time because of rain.

"That makes the things not easy," Nadal said. "So I started the match probably with not the right intensity, with more doubts than usual. The positive thing was that I had a good reaction at the beginning of the second set. Even if I didn't play fantastic, I played the way that I had to play, with intensity, you know, with passion."

Nadal also lost the first set of his opening match against Daniel Brands and was down 3-0 in the second-set tiebreaker before he rallied. Last year lost one set in the entire tournament en route to a record seventh Roland Garros title.

Federer, seeded No. 2, was broken in the opening game but held the rest of the way and eased into the fourth round by beating No. 30 Julien Benneteau of France, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.

Federer hit 31 winners with 21 unforced errors to eliminate Benneteau, who had won when they played at Rotterdam in February.

"I'm able to play quite aggressive at the moment," Federer said. "I don't know if I can keep that up. But the important thing is to keep the errors somewhat low, because otherwise it's just silly aggressiveness. It has to be controlled aggression."

Federer seeks a record 18th Grand Slam title, and his first since Wimbledon last year.

No. 12 Tommy Haas became the first 35-year-old since 2007 to reach the French Open's third round, beating 20-year-old American qualifier Jack Sock 7-6 (3), 6-2, 7-5.

Haas next plays No. 19 John Isner, who overcame a two-set deficit for the first time in his career to win an all-American match against Ryan Harrison, 5-7, 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-1, 8-6.

The No. 1-ranked Williams, seeking her first French Open title since 2002, beat Sorana Cirstea 6-0, 6-2 and has lost only six games in three matches. Williams swung hard, as always, but committed only 16 unforced errors and extended her career-best winning streak to 27 matches.

"I play very aggressive," she said. "That's important for me, because I want to keep on winning here."

Sharapova needed only 15 minutes to close out a 6-2, 6-4 victory over 19-year-old Eugenie Bouchard. The match was suspended on Thursday night with Sharapova up a break in the second set at 4-2, and she was relieved to finish.

"It was such a long day yesterday, and obviously it's always difficult to have to come back," Sharapova said.

With a morning start on another chilly, damp day in Paris, fans were late arriving at Court Suzanne Lenglen, which may have contributed to Nadal's malaise.

The match was his first against the No. 35-ranked Klizan, and the slender Slovak's aggressive left-handed strokes from the baseline quickly made an impression.

"Wow," Nadal exclaimed after one winner by Klizan whizzed past.

Nadal's shots lacked their usual depth and sting at the outset, and he pushed a forehand wide at the end of a long rally to lose serve for the first time.

Klizan served out the set before Nadal gained a foothold, racing to a 4-0 lead in the second set.

Nadal swept the final eight points of the third set to take command. His groundstrokes started landing beyond the service line more consistently, and dogged defense helped bail him out.

He said his annoyance about the scheduling won't linger.

"When something like that happens, all we can do is just accept it, try to be positive," he said. "Now is not the time to be angry or to have negative thoughts."

Now 54-1 at the French Open, Nadal seeks to become first man to win eight titles at the same Grand Slam event.

Regulators told to crack down on predatory payday lenders

By Matt Scuffham

LONDON (Reuters) - The consumer watchdog must get tough on unscrupulous short-term lenders that target the financially vulnerable and lend them money they can't afford to repay, a parliamentary committee said on Friday.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) said bad practices by some of these firms were costing already hard-pressed borrowers at least 450 million pounds a year.

So-called payday lenders, which offer loans that are repaid when borrowers get their wages, have grown rapidly in Britain as banks cut back on short-term credit after the 2008 financial crisis. But they have been criticised for charging sky-high interest rates and for shoddy treatment of customers.

The committee's call for a crack-down on some of these firms follows its review of how effectively Britain's 176 billion pound a year consumer lending industry is regulated.

Committee Chairwoman Margaret Hodge said some lenders used predatory techniques to target vulnerable people on low incomes, encouraging them to take out loans which, when rolled over with extra interest, rapidly became out of control debts.

She said the regulator, the Office of Fair Trading, had been ineffective and timid in its handling of the sector. The OFT had never given a fine to any of the 72,000 firms in the market and very rarely revoked a company's license, Hodge said.

The OFT said in response it had taken "strong, targeted action to tackle the areas of greatest risk to consumers." The OFT said its powers were limited and that it was only able to impose fines in very limited circumstances.

In March, the OFT gave Britain's biggest 50 payday lenders 12 weeks to change their business practices or risk losing their licenses after finding evidence of irresponsible lending. The watchdog said on Friday it had since closed down three payday lenders and opened formal investigations into three others.

Wonga, one of the biggest payday lenders in Britain, more than trebled its earnings last year. Its annual percentage interest rate is listed on Wonga.com as 4,214 percent.

The firm has said it makes stringent checks on borrowers and turns down two-thirds of applications. It has called for tighter control and regulation to stamp out the worst practices within the industry.

The parliamentary committee said that annual percentage interest rates were misleading to borrowers and should be replaced by a legally required statement of the total amount that borrowers must repay. It also recommended that the OFT increased the license fees it charges lenders to provide more money for regulating them.

The OFT will cease to exist in 2014 and will hand over regulation of the sector to the newly-created Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). The committee recommended that the FCA has better intelligence so it can improve protection of consumers and should apply tougher sanctions when it identifies wrongdoing.

The Citizens Advice Bureau, a charity that helps people with legal and financial issues, on Tuesday accused payday lenders of bullying borrowers into extending loans and harassing those heavily in debt.

Media outlets refuse off-the-record meeting with Holder

Attorney General Eric Holder (Kevin Lamarque/Reuters)

A growing number of news organizations invited to meet this week with Attorney General Eric Holder to discuss the Justice Department's guidelines governing security leak investigations that involve reporters are refusing the invitation citing the meetings' off-the-record status.

A Justice Department official said on Wednesday that meetings with select bureau chiefs will be off the record to "best facilitate the candid, free-flowing discussions we hope to have in order to bring about meaningful engagement."

Holder called the meetings this week as part of a department review directed by President Barack Obama after controversy over the secret seizure of Associated Press reporters' and editors' phone records and secret monitoring of Fox News reporter James Rosen.

But by Thursday afternoon, Reuters, Fox News, CNN, McClatchy and Huffington Post had joined the Associated Press and The New York Times in deciding to boycott the meetings due to their off-the-record status.

"I told folks that I'd be happy to participate if the meeting were on the record. And I offered to bring our First Amendment lawyer with me," McClatchy's Washington bureau chief James Asher wrote in an email to Yahoo News. "So far, no response."

"We would welcome the opportunity to hear the attorney general's explanation for the Department of Justice's handling of subpoenas to journalists, and his thoughts about improving the protections afforded to media organizations in responding to government investigations, but believe firmly that his comments should be for publication," Reuters spokesperson Barb Burg said on Thursday.

"CNN will decline the invitation for an off-the-record meeting," the cable news outlet noted in its coverage of the meeting on Thursday. "A CNN spokesperson says if the meeting with the attorney general is on the record, CNN would plan to participate."

Erin Madigan White, the AP's media relations manager, said in a widely circulated statement on Wednesday that "if it is not on the record, AP will not attend and instead will offer our views on how the regulations should be updated in an open letter."

"It isn't appropriate for us to attend an off-the-record meeting with the attorney general," New York Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson said in a statement.

Asked Thursday if the White House supports holding the meetings off the record, White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest, during a Q&A with pool reporters aboard Air Force One, referred questions on the ground rules for the meeting to the Justice Department. "They're the ones who are conducting the review. But we are hopeful that media organizations will take advantage of the opportunity to constructively contribute to this process," Earnest said.

When asked a question suggesting that holding these meetings off the record is hypocritical, he said, "No, I don?t actually see that."

So, who is going to the meetings?

Jerry Seib, Washington bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal, wrote in an email to Yahoo News late Thursday afternoon that "at this point, I?m planning to attend." He declined to comment on the boycott.

Los Angeles Times/Chicago Tribune Washington, D.C., bureau chief David Lauter will also attend, a spokeswoman confirmed on Thursday to Yahoo News.

ABC News, a partner of Yahoo News, confirmed its decision to send a representative, but said it will "press for that conversation to be put on the record." (Yahoo News was not invited to participate.)

Representatives for the The Washington Post have told news outlets they will attend.

And Politico is also rejecting the boycott. "As editor in chief, I routinely have off-the-record conversations with people who have questions or grievances about our coverage or our news gathering practices," John Harris wrote in an email. "I feel anyone?whether an official or ordinary reader?should be able to have an unguarded conversation with someone in a position of accountability for a news organization when there is good reason."

The Justice Department did not respond to Yahoo News' request for comment on Thursday on the boycott.

Jamstar Acoustics: A Guitar Learning App That Won't Hold You Back

Learn-to-play-guitar apps are a dime a dozen, and to be honest, most of them aren't worth the data they take to download. Light up fretboards are great?until you try to move over to a real, non-illuminated guitar. JamStar, though, works more like a real live, actual guitar teacher would to help you get better on a real live, actual guitar.

What does it do?

Listens as you play certain exercises and, depending on your mastery, allows you to move on or sends you back to try again. And again. And again. Until you finally get it right. It even tells you exactly what it is you're doing wrong, too, as you move along through its ever-increasing song catalog.

Why do we like it?

The app doesn't lay out every single pattern for every single note like some other guitar apps. Instead, you learn in a much more natural process, meaning that once you graduate from the app, you'll be able to maintain your skill level even without its guiding hand. The app uses "polyphonic algorithms" to identify the various chords and notes, so if you're strum is off, the app will be able to let you know what the problem is and how to fix it. Plus, Alfred, and educational music publishing company, has joined with the app, giving it access to plenty of both new and classic popular tunes. If you're going to go the self-taught road, this is a nice little addition that won't end up hurting you in the long run.

NJ BPU approves PSE&G's $446 million solar plan

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- The board that regulates New Jersey's public utilities on Wednesday approved a $446 million solar energy plan proposed by the state's largest utility, adding several recommendations aimed at increasing oversight of the nearly half-billion-dollar programs.

The Board of Public Utilities unanimously approved Public Service Electric and Gas's nearly $200 million extension of its solar loan program that targets mainly residential and business customers. A $247 million extension of a program that will develop solar installations primarily on unused landfills and former industrial sites passed by a 3-1 margin.

Board commissioner Jeanne Fox, who cast the vote against the extension of the Solar 4 All program, raised concerns that ratepayers will be required to fund the program and that the new solar development could flood the market for solar energy credits that utilities buy from solar producers. Prices for the credits have fallen in recent years because more solar energy was being produced than the utilities needed.

Terry Moran, PSE&G's director of solar market strategy and development, said the company doesn't anticipate the Solar 4 All program having a negative impact on the solar credits market since it is reduced by more than two-thirds ? from 136 megawatts in an original proposal to 45 megawatts ? and will be rolled out over three years. A megawatt is capable of powering about 1,000 homes.

"We feel the reduced program will help alleviate that risk," Moran said.

The BPU on Wednesday modified PSE&G's proposal to require the company to furnish the board with monthly financial and progress reports; submit within 30 days its criteria for selecting projects and developers and give the board and ratepayer advocate 10 days to review contracts before they are executed. PSE&G's proposal had provided for yearly reporting.

The Office of Rate Counsel had sought more oversight as part of its objections to PSE&G's filing, and had criticized the plan for giving the company an unfair market advantage since it will recover its costs by increases to ratepayers.

"We're glad to see that they at least were considering our objections and that they made some modifications based on that," director Stefanie Brand said.

Board commissioners who approved both programs spoke of the need for New Jersey to have a robust solar energy market but cautioned that it must proceed carefully.

"It is extremely important to have increased transparency," Joseph Fiordaliso said. "As an agency we have to monitor that very closely."

While landfills and brownfields are seen as prime locations for solar installations, so far they account for a tiny handful of the more than 20,000 solar projects already installed in New Jersey. Five landfill solar projects are in operation and about two dozen more are either in development or being considered, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection.

"We're gratified that the board has approved both of our filings," Moran said. "As we've said during the course of these proceedings, we felt both of these filings are consistent with and satisfy the state's energy master plan goals, so we're really looking forward to the process of implementing both of them."

New ruthenium complexes target cancer cells without typical side effects, study suggests

May 28, 2013 ? A team of UT Arlington researchers has identified two ruthenium-based complexes they believe could pave the way for treatments that control cancer cell growth more effectively and are less toxic for patients than current chemotherapies.

Fred MacDonnell, professor of chemistry and biochemistry at The University of Texas at Arlington, has been researching a new generation of metal-based antitumor agents along with a team from the City of Hope Comprehensive Center Center in Duarte, Calif. Their aim is to find new therapies to complement widely used platinum-based therapies, such as cisplatin. Cisplatin is one of the most widely used anti-cancer drugs and shows remarkable effectiveness against some cancers, however it does not work on all cancers and can have severe side effects.

In a study published in the May edition of Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, the team describes two newly developed ruthenium polypyridyl complexes, or RPCs, that yielded results comparable to cisplatin against human non-small cell lung cancer cells in pre-clinical lab tests.

A graphic from MacDonnell's paper shows the growth of a control tumor compared to the growth of tumors treated with ruthenium-based complexes developed in the lab.

Unlike cisplatin, the RPCs were generally cleared from the body unchanged, without noticeable effects on metabolism or kidney function. In lab tests, healthy cells could withstand almost 10 times as much exposure to the team's ruthenium complexes as the cancer cells.

The study also found that the RPCs seemed to target cells in hypoxic states. Hypoxia, or low oxygen, is a signature of tumor cells.

"Cancer drugs on the market now generally are less effective under hypoxic conditions or insensitive to the oxygen concentration," MacDonnell said. "Since many tumor cells are under hypoxic stress and most normal cells are not, having something that becomes even more effective under hypoxia could have some real benefit to the patient."

The effectiveness of the RPCs tested seems to be associated with a particular portion of their structure. This portion, known as "tatpp" is redox-active, which means it is reduced when bound to DNA in the normal cellular environment. MacDonnell's team believe that this reduction step in the DNA bound compound sets in motion a biological process that triggers apoptosis, also known as programmed cell death, in cancer cells. Under hypoxic conditions, this reduction is more prevalent, leading to greater cell death in those cells.

"Being activated under low-oxygen conditions makes these unique complexes excellent candidates for use on some of the most difficult to treat tumors," said Dr. Sanjay Awasthi, professor of medical oncology and therapeutics research at City of Hope. "Now that we have demonstrated the role of the tatpp ligand in these biological processes, our team can continue toward the goal of using ruthenium-based complexes to enhance current treatments."

MacDonnell said the ruthenium complexes' increased effectiveness against malignant cells could be because the complexes can more easily enter cancer cells, which tend to be more metabolically active than normal cells. That hypothesis, however, is something the team will explore with further research.?

Besides MacDonnell and Awasthi, co-authors are: Abhishek Yadav, Thamara Janaratne, Adam S. Dayoub and Arthi Krishnan, of the UT Arlington chemistry/biochemistry department; Doyle H. Hawkins, of the UT Arlington math department; and Sharad S. Singhal and Sushma Yadav, of the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center.

NTSB: Thousands of U.S. bridges at risk of freak collapse

SEATTLE (AP) ? The collapse of an interstate highway bridge in northern Washington state should be a wake-up call that prompts an expansive safety review, according to the chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board.

Investigators need to establish a full account of what happened at the span over Interstate 5 about 60 miles north of Seattle and whether the same thing could happen elsewhere, Debbie Hersman said.

"At the end of the day, it's about preventing an accident like this," she said Saturday after examining the collapsed structure in the Skagit River.

The bridge came down last week after a truck bumped against the steel framework, prompting a collapse that sent two vehicles into the river. Three people involved escaped with non-life threatening injuries.

An investigation by The Associated Press suggests similar accidents could indeed happen elsewhere. Thousands of bridges around the U.S. are kept standing by engineering design, rather than sheer size or redundant protections. Such spans may be one freak accident or mistake away from collapse.

Bridge regulators call them "fracture critical" bridges, because if a single, vital component is compromised, they can crumple.

Hersman's team will spend about a week inspecting the I-5 bridge, talking to the truck driver whose vehicle hit it, and examining maintenance documents and previous accident reports.

Other over-height vehicles struck the Skagit River bridge before the collapse on Thursday, she noted. Investigators are using a high tech 3-D video camera to review the scene and attempt to pinpoint where the bridge failure began.

Hersman does not expect the investigation to delay removal of debris from the river or work on temporary replacement or repair plans. State and federal officials will work together on the investigation, she said.

They'll be watching for safety issues that could affect other bridges.

"The results can be very catastrophic," Hersman said. "We're very fortunate in this situation."

Washington state officials said Saturday that it will take time to find both short- and long-term fixes for the I-5 bridge.

While, the National Transportation and Safety Board finishes its inspection, state workers will begin removing debris from the river. Next, a temporary solution will be put in place to return traffic to Washington state's most important north-south roadway.

Inspectors say they are working to find out whether the collapse was a fluke or a sign of bigger problems.

A trucker was hauling a load of drilling equipment Thursday evening when his load bumped against the steel framework over the bridge. He looked in his rearview mirror and saw the span collapse into the water behind him.

Motorists should not expect to drive on I-5 between Mount Vernon and Burlington for many weeks and possibly months, said Washington Transportation Department spokesman Bart Treece.

About 71,000 vehicles use that stretch of highway every day.

Officials were looking for a temporary, pre-fabricated bridge to replace the 160-foot section that failed, Gov. Jay Inslee said Friday. That option could be in place in weeks. Otherwise, it could be months before a replacement can be built, the governor said.

Inslee said it will cost $15 million to repair the bridge. The federal government has promised $1 million in emergency dollars and more money could come later, according to Washington's congressional delegation.

ASUS Computex teaser claims new hardware will 'move you'

DNP ASUS posts teaser pic ahead of Computex, claims it'll 'move you'

ASUS has a habit of teasing products and it has done it again with a photo of this spun metal... thing. Posted on the company's G+ page as a Computex taster, the picture is accompanied by a puzzlingly vague hint that the new device will "move you." But unless we're about to see an automotive or fitness accessory, we won't get too excited -- after all, it could just be another disc writer.

Dinosaur chomped like a bird of prey, say scientists

A study of an Allosaurus fossil found that the massive dinosaur dined more like a kestrel than a crocodile, tearing flesh from carcasses by pulling its head straight back.?

By Eoin O'Carroll,?Staff / May 22, 2013

At first glance, a nearly 30-foot long, 150-million-year-old dinosaur may not seem to have much in common with a modern-day bird of prey, but according to new research, the Allosaurus and the falcon at least had the same table manners.

In a study published this week in the journal?Palaeontologia Electronica, Ohio University researchers used a CT scanner to create a digital image of an Allosaurus fragilis skull. After adding neck and jaw muscles, air sinuses, and a windpipe to the image, they then, using a physics simulator, modeled how the dinosaur would have moved its head.

They found that, unlike the Tyrannosaurus, which paleontologists say dismembered its victims by thrashing its head from side to side like a crocodile, the Allosaurus, which, like Tyrannosaurus walked on two legs and had stubby forelimbs, most likely dined by biting into its prey and then tearing the flesh retracting its head back and upward.

Their discovery hinged on a neck muscle that?was unusually positioned on the Allosaurus. On most predatory dinosaurs, such as the T. rex the longissimus capitis superficialis runs along the side of the neck, where it attaches to a bony protrusion at the base of the skull. But on the Allosaurus, the muscle is attached much lower on the skull.?

"This neck muscle acts like a rider pulling on the reins of a horse's bridle," said ?Ohio?University paleontologist Eric Snively, the study's lead author, in an Ohio University press release.?"If the muscle on one side contracts, it would turn the head in that direction, but if the muscles?on both sides pull, it pulls the head straight back."

Most Allosaurus specimens, including the one used in this study, have been unearthed in the western United States, in a fossil-rich region known as the Morrison Formation. During the late Jurassic period, about 150 million years ago, the Allosaurus sat at the top of the food chain. In 2005, paleontologists detailed?evidence?of combat between Allosaurus and Stegosaurus, suggesting that the armored quadroped was on the Allosaurus's menu.

The Tyrannosaurs lived much later, about 65 million years ago.

"Apparently one size doesn't fit all when it comes to dinosaur feeding styles," said Dr. Snively. "Many people think of Allosaurus as a smaller and earlier version of?T. rex, but our engineering analyses show that they were very different predators."

Both genuses are theropods, a group of two-legged dinosaurs that includes today's birds. In other words, the Allosaurus and the falcon have at least one more thing in common: they are both dinosaurs. ?

Gas Cylinder Explosion On Pakistan School Bus Kills 17

LAHORE, Pakistan ? Sixteen schoolchildren and a teacher burned to death in eastern Pakistan early Saturday when a short-circuit near a leaking gas tank caused their minibus to burst into flames, police said.

Police officer Ijaz Ahmad said five children were also injured, three of whom were listed in critical condition, in the blaze in Gujrat about 200 kilometers (120 miles) northwest of the capital, Islamabad. The children were aged between 6 and 12, he said.

Earlier, police had blamed an exploding natural gas cylinder for the incident. The bus was powered with both types of fuel.

TV footage showed the charred minibus and victims of the relatives crying outside a hospital.

A schoolgirl told Pakistan's Geo news channel that the driver escaped when the vehicle went up in flames. Authorities said they were trying to track him down and arrest him.

Ahmad said the driver could have saved many lives. "We have been told that he fled from there when the children were crying for help," the officer said.

In a statement, President Asif Ali Zardari expressed "deep shock" over the incident and directed authorities to provide the best medical care to the injured children.

99% Mud

All Critics (134) | Top Critics (31) | Fresh (132) | Rotten (2)

There is an enchanted-fairy-tale aspect to Mud, but its bright, calm surface only barely disguises a strong, churning undercurrent.

A modern fairy tale, steeped in the sleepy Mississippi lore of Twain and similar American writers, and with a heart as big as the river is wide.

Nichols has a strong feeling for the tactility of natural elements-water, wood, terrain, weather.

Nichols takes his time with the story, dwelling on how the boy is shaped by the killer's tragic sense of romance, yet the suspense holds.

"Mud" isn't just a movie. It's the firm confirmation of a career.

"Mud" unfolds at its own pace, revealing its story in slivers. The performances are outstanding, especially from Sheridan, who plays tough, sweet, vulnerable and confused with equal conviction.

The Southern-fried drama "Mud" is an electrifying example of what happens when you merge a crackerjack yarn with a very specific setting, and then pour on the heat with riveting performances.

McConaughey and Sheridan 's acting skills, as well as those of the entire supporting cast, make this movie better than it ought to be.

It gets under our skin because Nichols gives us time to come to know Mud's island like the places we knew as children.

As Mud might say, it's a hell of a thing.

The boys are so skillfully played that Mud also plays like cinema verite. Nichols' fluid camerawork suggests a documentary-style approach. That helps these young lads transform into flesh-and-blood characters who get our attention and support.

Sheridan, who played the Terrence Malick surrogate in The Tree Of Life, is terrific at conveying adolescent confusion with tiny squints and frowns, and McConaughey plays off him masterfully.

Carefully crafting films that fly just below the political radar, director-writer Jeff Nichols is slowly, but surely, reweaving the fabric of the American dream.

It's totally worth it to pay good money to see a good, little film nestled between theaters showing 'Iron Man 3' and 'The Great Gatsby.' (Complete Content Details for Parents also available)

This is a junior adventure story echoing Huckleberry Finn and Stand By Me, a tale which is in no hurry to unfold, but beautifully done, exquisitely performed, and filled with terror and wonder.

Beautifully acted, intellectually engaging, and dramatically satisfying, Mud deserves to rocket to the top of your must-see list.

Nichols is a gifted writer-director who knows how to get into the heads of his characters. And this film has superior actors who create people who are intriguing and hugely involving.

'Mud' is a standout film in this 'coming of age' genre mainly because of its central character, one tough, warm-hearted, stubborn little kid who believes in the power of love, above all else.

Other than pacing problems that needlessly stretch the film past the two-hour mark, 'Mud' slings the dirt and sweat with the best of them, as it both mourns and celebrates a way of life that's all but disappeared.

A sublime coming-of-age film, 'Mud' would be the offspring if 'Stand By Me' and 'Cape Fear' reproduced.

Mud is a movie of striking performances and memorable images and of people who seem to belong in rather than being imposed upon their environment.

A brilliant metaphor for how a child deals with divorce.

This might be Mud. But it deserves to stick.

This is a film that gives McConaughey the chance to be an actor rather than a star, and, not for the first time, he grabs the opportunity.

Google Capital to make investments in maturing tech firms

Google campus

Google Ventures has a reputation for backing tech winners early on -- it gave a boost to this little startup called Nest, for example. It wants to exert influence every step of the way, however, and it's launching Google Capital to make this happen. The new fund is investing in firms that aren't quite so young, but are doing "amazing things" aligned with Google's interests, according to general partner Mike Pearson. While Google Capital won't make its formal debut until the summer, it has already invested in three unnamed companies; we wouldn't be surprised if we learn a lot more about the fund a few months' time.
