MOON/24? Aries opposite MERCURY/24? Libra 4:36 am, 7:36 am

Our Libra friends may stress that having Awareness is ALL. Awareness of others, awareness of what you really sound like. Mercury/Venus will be pretty much sextile (60? positive angle) all throughout October!?

MOON/27? Aries trine VENUS/27? Leo 1:06 pm, 4:06 pm

Young people can be impressed by attractive leaders or image-makers or television actors or popular people.?

MOON/29? Aries opposite SATURN/29? Libra 3:32 pm, 6:32 pm

MOON/29? Aries Void-of-Course 3:32 pm, 6:32 pm

Kids could come home tonight exhausted or discouraged. People complain or criticize. Consider the Source! Just don?t let it be YOU! Kids will whine about homework or chores, who haven?t learned to accept doing what we must do gladly. Or about not getting what they want. Saturn will soon leave Libra, where we?ve been painfully confronting ourselves in others, being shown in others what we haven?t acknowledged in ourselves.? ?

MOON ENTERS TAURUS 4:26 pm PDST, 7:26 pm EDST

Venus Rules. And, Venus is in Leo the first half of the Moon in Taurus and then in Virgo the second half. We could feel more competitive with others, then realize we actually compete only with ourselves. People feel more grounded at this hour. They appreciate what they have, from the roof over their heads to what life has given them, the talents and opportunities they have been given from their parentage, how they?ve made the most out of them, what they?ve learned and earned for themselves. What we possess makes us feel secure in ourselves.? ?

MOON/O?48? Taurus sextile R NEPTUNE/O?48? Pisces 6:00 pm, 9:00 pm

Most likely, people will want to seek their Comfort Zone tonight.? ?

This week, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Saturn change signs.?

TUESDAY OCT 2

MOON/7? Taurus trine PLUTO/7? Capricorn 6:22 am, 9:22 am

Ch-ch-ch-changes! People are ready to make some changes this morning. We adapt to changing circumstances. I expect that most of us will keep plugging today just to see how much we can accomplish.?

VENUS/29? Leo sextile SATURN/29? Libra 5:07 pm, 8:07 pm

Modesty Furthers--as Venus exits the Stage in Leo and heads for the green room to review the performance, the notices and the critiques. We lose our public/onstage persona, as might prefer being in the background for awhile, packing up ?our costumes and props.? ?

VENUS ENTERS VIRGO 11:59 pm PDST, 2:59 am EDST

Health Matters to our Virgo friends and the result is in how they look and feel, recognizing the mind lives in the body! Venus will make them doubly attractive as capable, organized and together people. But do they attract people who aren?t looking for and finding those things in themselves? Our Virgo friends know exactly where their tools are, but when it comes to finding a mate, they are quick to see those very human imperfections! Venus/Virgo might use terms like: ?presentable? or ?disreputable.? Venus in Virgo, which will be with us through October 28. Use this time to think about reorganizing your wardrobe, closets, dressers, vitamins, medicine chest/first aid kit, cosmetics, your office or workspace, your pets? things. Virgo is about the skills we gain and the habits we acquire through practice, the ability to to get things done--quickly and efficiently. Venus will enter Libra three weeks from now right before The Full Moon, the weekend before Halloween!?

WEDNESDAY OCT 3

The Moon continues in Taurus making no aspects to the other planets

This morning, Go With The Flow. Have NO Major Expectations. The Taurus Moon makes for getting things quietly done and done well. Avoid daydreaming.? ?

VENUS/O? Virgo opposite R NEPTUNE/O? Pisces 3:28 pm, 6:28 pm

Celebrity Encounters? Encounters with an Archetypal Attraction who really Sends You? Even Health-Conscious Virgo may be swayed by glamour and could indulge in alcohol and drugs. Music too, takes the highly analytical, intellectual Virgo out of her mental space to open the door to emotional expression leading to romance. Not to mention his/her Creative Muse. ?

?? ? Just a reminder for all you undecided voters out there: The First Presidential Debate of 2012 will take place this evening under the Taurus Moon focusing on the domestic economy and the national status quo. I guess the question is: How uncomfortable is saving the economy going to make me?

THURSDAY OCT 4

MOON/28? Taurus opposite MARS/28? Scorpio 12:44 am, 3:44 am

MOON/28? Taurus Void-of-Course 12:44 am, 3:44 am

Sex. The Rapid Approach and The Quick Getaway? Or Is this the Start of Something New, such as embarking on long-term relationship and family building? You decide. Political Pundits will no doubt be writing passionately!?

MOON ENTERS GEMINI 4:47 am PDST, 7:47 am EDST

Mercury Rules. And Mercury changes signs halfway through the Gemini Moon! Today it?s in the last degrees of Libra, more witty, charming and inclusive; Tomorrow, more incisive, secretive and exclusive? Mercury Rules--our speech, minds, memories, writing, ability to reason and movements. We feel more Awake and Aware at this hour! People turn on the news, answer those ringing phone and check their emails.?

MOON/O? Gemini square R NEPTUNE/O? Pisces 6:17 am, 9:17 am

Be careful what you buy or buy into--such as a salesperson?s flattery. With the Gemini Moon squaring-off with the Venus/Neptune opposition. We could be nursing Great Expectations or imagining the grand impression we could make on someone if we bought that outfit. Watch out for any desire to be ?saved? by someone or something. ?

SD JUPITER/16?23? Gemini turns Stationary Retrograde 6:18 am, 9:18 am

Jupiter has been in its detriment in Gemini...and you may encounter someone who has diarrhea of the mouth during this period! Or someone who goes overboard with the Hard Sell or even Self-Promotion! Others who find popularity and fame, find themselves as the target of gossip and speculation. Natives with this placement know the importance of investing in higher education and travel and like to be thought of as well-informed.

MOON/1? Gemini square VENUS/1? Virgo 7:56 am, 10:56 am

Gemini might take issue with what Virgo considers Normal, Healthy, Proper, Acceptable or Correct and might say something like: Who Says??

MOON/6? Gemini sextile R URANUS/6? Aries 5:39 pm, 8:39 pm

Kids could surprise us with their latest enthusiasm! Or latest Must-Have! No one wants to sit still tonight! Is it a board game night at your house??

FRIDAY OCT 5

MERCURY/29? Libra conjunct SATURN/29? Libra 2:44 am, 5:44 am

Do I hear slamming doors?? Mercury Rules our Gemini Moon and is conjunct Saturn. The chatty nature and forward momentum of Gemini stops or changes. Poor losers? Hurtful criticism? Repetitive complaints? Nagging? Communication cuts out? Does sleep silence our speech? Or does shock? There?s difficulty speaking. Please DON?T be Asleep At The Wheel tonight! Does an awareness of consequences and moral responsibilities stop us?? Both Mercury and Saturn move from Libra into Scorpio almost simultaneously today--does the importance of having a wide variety of friends or interests change? Are we concentrating--with almost shamanic personal intent on just one person, goal or thing? ?

MERCURY ENTERS SCORPIO 3:35 am, 6:35 am

Mercury/Scorpio has a penetrating mind, a good memory and a sharpest tongue in the zodiac!? They speak incisively, especially in encountering liars and frauds, if sometimes sarcastically, and can explain difficult things unambiguously. They are dogged in their pursuit of truth, unraveling puzzles, the solution of mysteries. Skeptical, they can mistrust easy answers, even appearances and are immune to flattery. I?m sure little kids will be talking about nothing but Halloween--and ghosts, werewolves, vampires and the like.

MOON/12? Gemini trine SUN/12? Libra 6:41 am, 9:41 am

Nice Morning. People take care to be attractive, courteous and well-spoken this morning. People get busy and stay busy.?

SATURN ENTERS SCORPIO 1:33 pm PDST, 4:33 pm EDST

Seriousness and Secrecy blend when Saturn enters Scorpio?s watery realm. Poker players, spies, detectives, scientific researchers and accounting investigators could have this placement, a very cool exterior that belies a ruthless drive inside to get to the root cause, error, flaw, nemesis or culprit. Like all planets in Scorpio, Saturn here is not moved by flattery, and is extremely perceptive, if not intuitive, about human nature, motivations and willpower or lack of it, nor is Saturn/Scorpio inclined to expose his own feelings or strategy and can be downright devious in attaining what he wants.? ?

? ? There?s Mutual Reception and a kind of resonance between Pluto in Saturn-Ruled Capricorn and Saturn in Pluto-Ruled Scorpio. I have a feeling that mineral wealth, mining, oil exploration, fracking affecting the water table, waste disposal and containment? (especially chemical, toxic and radioactive materials) and pollution will be big concerns in the next two and a half years.?

MOON/16?23? Gemini conjunct SR JUPITER/16?23? Gemini 2:08 pm, 5:08 pm

MOON/16?23? Gemini Void-of-Course 2:08 pm, 5:08 pm

Foot-in-Mouth Warning! Avoid Bragging, Extravagance, Gambling on Sports, or foolish generosity or impulsive spending! Overdoing the Talking without really listening to what other have to say? Shamelessly gossip, revealing secrets or confidences to impress others? Hope you don?t spend the next 24+ hours worrying about having said too much to those who can and will-- spread it around.?

MERCURY/O? Scorpio trine R NEPTUNE/O? Pisces 3:07 pm, 6:07 pm

Talking and Drinking? Drinking and Talking? Some could head for the beach or get in some water therapy in a hot tub. Do we communicate better with music and dance or paint than words? Do we talk up new movies or do we take up making our own videos? People want to work their imagination and creative ideas, especially for Halloween costumes! Who?s Mysterious? Pisces/Scorpio combinations make for being a natural detective or being a sneaky paparazzi or prankster!?

SATURDAY OCT 6

The Gemini Moon is still Void-of-Course?

This Mush-Mind Advisory will continue all day until past quitting time. Many will feel an information overload and will likely want to get away from it all and do nothing. ?

MOON ENTERS CANCER 5:45 pm PDST, 8:45 pm EDST

The Moon Rules. It may be a great relief just to be Completely At Home tonight! We take our cues from Women, especially Mom. Many could have fresh energy for entertaining at home. For the next two days, our concerns revolve around home and family, especially the very youngest and oldest. Activities for children on the Monday holiday? Caregiving for elderly parents? We might be concerned for the condition of our homes and gardens or activities our immediate environment as we head into fall. ?

MOON/O? Cancer trine SATURN/O? Scorpio 6:02 pm, 9:02 pm

Women could voice their concerns while working.? This Grand Trine in Water Signs (Moon/Saturn/Neptune) makes me think of a group of people coming together to practice, work together creatively or make music in the kitchen.?

MOON/O? Cancer trine R NEPTUNE/O? Pisces 7:09 pm, 10:09 pm

Women are into The Music and are up for Dancing! New Videos for the kids? New Movies for the fall season??

MARS ENTERS SAGITTARIUS 8:21 pm PDST, 11:21 pm EDST

Are we watching Baseball? College Football? Pro Sports? If we?re not, we will soon will be! Mars energizes our interest not only in sports, but international news, overseas travel and unifying philosophies. It will also energize coaches, teachers and professors, publishers and broadcasters. Our Sagittarius friends are not only invested in their beliefs and political convictions, their theories and opinions, but some will be out to make converts to their way of thinking.? ?

MOON/2? Cancer trine MERCURY/2? Scorpio 11:09 pm, 2:09 am?

Cancer definitely has a sensuous side and Scorpio is into pushing the envelope. ?

SUNDAY OCT 7

MOON/3? Cancer sextile VENUS/3? Virgo 3:29 am, 6:29 am

Those up late or those up early--could get busy on health or organization issues.?

MOON/6? Cancer square R URANUS/6? Aries 6:15 am, 9:15 am

This morning, kids could wake us up early! Some kind of an early morning scare? Even kids can be First Responders! Uranus/Pluto will be rapidly separating from now on from their exact square of 9/18 and the Full Moon/Sun interacting with them a week ago Saturday.?

MOON/7? Cancer opposite PLUTO/7? Capricorn 7:55 am, 10:55 am

Those working Sunday morning best be ready to work or expect to get fired. Home vs Career issues? Joblessness impacting the status quo on the homefront??

MARS/O? Sagittarius square R NEPTUNE/O? Pisces 7:12 pm, 10:12 pm

In the background, Mars/Neptune could make for costly fumbles, thigh or foot injuries, miscommunications on the playing field, and DUIs, Drunk Driving Accidents, alcoholic insults, misunderstandings, bar fights and arguments over beliefs and belief systems. Don?t let Anyone drown! Stay in Awareness for anyone voicing despair and hopelessness or talking about acting on it. Double check all medications, so there are NO mix-ups!

In the post midnight hours, there could be arguments between those at home or in the immediate environment and spouses or friends, those related by blood or those related by marriage, or with those who are competitors or adversaries. Anglican church deadlocked over new leader: report

LONDON (Reuters) - A Church of England panel meeting in secret to choose the next Archbishop of Canterbury has failed to reach agreement on who should be the new leader of the world's 80 million Anglicans, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

After three days of talks behind closed doors in an undisclosed location, officials narrowed the field to three candidates, but will need to meet again to finish the job, the Sunday Times said, citing an unnamed senior cleric.

The choice of a replacement for Rowan Williams, who steps down in December, is critical for a church in danger of splitting over divisive issues such as gay marriage and senior women clergy, and facing a rising threat from secularism.

The Crown Nominations Commission (CNC), a church panel with 16 members whose chairman is appointed by the prime minister, had been expected to pick a preferred candidate and a second choice on Friday, a church source said last week.

The names were then due to be passed to Prime Minister David Cameron and Queen Elizabeth, supreme governor of the Church of England, before an official announcement within days, possibly on Wednesday.

In a brief statement, the church said a decision would be reached during the autumn. Officials had previously signaled that it could come as early as next week.

"The work of the Commission continues. There will be no comment on any speculation about candidates or about the CNC's deliberations," it said.

According to the Sunday Times, the panel has a three name shortlist:

* Bishop of Norwich Graham James, 61, a keen amateur actor and cricketer who said last week he would "hope and pray" someone else gets the job.

* Archbishop of York John Sentamu, 63, a Ugandan-born traditionalist who holds the second most senior post in the Church of England and writes a column for the Sun newspaper.

* Bishop of Durham Justin Welby, 56, a former oil industry executive who has been a bishop for less than a year.

The 105th Archbishop of Canterbury will take over at a painful time for a church divided by long-running debates over sexuality and senior roles for women clergy. Liberal attitudes among some clerics in Britain and the United States have infuriated conservatives in places with growing congregations, such as Nigeria.

Williams, 62, who takes up a position at Cambridge University, said in March that his successor would need the "constitution of an ox and the skin of a rhinoceros".

The head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, expressed sympathy for the winning candidate.

"They all get hammered, you know, the Archbishops of Canterbury," he told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper. "I have sympathy. Everybody's saying it's an impossible job."

Whalen scores 20 to lead Lynx past Storm 78-70

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? With Seimone Augustus and Maya Moore around, Lindsay Whalen's focus generally isn't on scoring. That doesn't mean she can't.

Whalen scored 20 points to lead the defending champion Minnesota Lynx in a 78-70 victory over the Seattle Storm in the opener of the Western Conference semifinals Friday night.

"Of course we know they're going to pay a lot of attention to Seimone and Maya, they're great shooters and great players," Whalen said. "We all know we have to step it up and make plays as well."

Augustus scored 19 points, Moore added 16 and Rebekkah Brunson had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Minnesota. Whalen also tallied six assists and four rebounds.

The Lynx shot 46 percent against a Storm team that held opponents to a league-low 39 percent this season, and hit 22 of 28 free throws ? including 8 for 10 from Whalen.

"They have multiple weapons out there," Seattle coach Brian Agler said. "If you give too much attention to any one person, someone else will take advantage of it. Tonight, (Whalen) took advantage."

Rookie reserve Shekinna Stricklen scored 13 points to lead the Storm. Katie Smith and Lauren Jackson added 12 points each, with all of but one of Jackson's coming in the first half.

Game 2 is Sunday at Seattle.

Jackson, a three-time WNBA MVP, didn't play in any of the teams' four regular-season games as she was training with the Australian national team for the London Olympics. The Lynx won three of those matchups.

Jackson played a season-high 27 minutes, but it wasn't enough as Seattle shot just 39.7 percent from the floor and never led. Minnesota improved to 18-0 when holding opponents below 40 percent this season.

"I didn't get the looks I was getting in the first half," Jackson said. "They changed their defense up. We definitely have to look at how we're going to combat that next game."

The Lynx, who went 16-1 at home in the regular season, turned the ball over nine times in the first 20 minutes and led just 33-27 despite Seattle's 29-percent shooting from the floor in the first half.

But Augustus and Whalen scored six points each and Brunson added three more as Minnesota opened the third quarter on a 15-8 run, and extended the lead to a game-high 17 on Candice Wiggins' 3-pointer with 2:38 left in period.

Seattle then answered with an 11-3 run to close the quarter, and responded again with a 9-2 run over a nearly 5-minute stretch when the Lynx jumped back ahead by 13 on Moore's runner with 6:38 to play. But six points was as close as the Storm would get, as Moore and Augustus hit clutch shots in the final two minutes and Minnesota made 5 of 6 free throws in the final 32 seconds to seal the victory.

"I thought we got decent shots, we were playing well, just all of a sudden we're not scoring and not getting back on defense," Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said. "We have to have that focus when we don't score, they don't score. That's what let them back in it, a string of missed shots and then they made the barrage of 3s."

The Lynx and Storm face off in the postseason for the first time since the 2004 Western Conference semifinals, which Seattle swept en route to the first of its two league titles.

Minnesota is trying to become the first back-to-back champion since Los Angeles accomplished the feat in the 2001 and '02 seasons. The Houston Comets won the league's first four titles from 1997-2000.

Making Carp Fishing A Hobby - Central-Florida-Magazine.com

Because carps can grow into giants and they can put up a good fight when hooked many anglers around the world are beginning to like catching carps for sport. In the US and in New Zealand, among other countries, carps are seen as harmful to the habitat of native fishes and other wildlife. Many of the anglers that catch carps for sport think that if carp fishing will become more popular, the carp population will be kept in check lessening their harmful effect to the environment. This will also help improve the general image of the fish to the public.

Carp as a sport fish is already well known among European anglers. The reputation of the fish?s size potential and fighting spirit have made carp fishing businesses a success. The sales of carp tackle is consistently up in this part of the world.

In the US, many communities where the carp fish have been introduced inappropriately still think of the fish as a pest. But many angling organizations are trying to change this image. Through the efforts of the local and national organizations of carp anglers, events for catching carps as a sport are becoming more popular in many states.

Similar to the carp popularity phenomenon in the US, the Canadians are beginning to enjoy angling carps. This is due to the difficulty of good fly fishing enthusiasts of catching this particular fish. In places like New Zealand where the species have been carelessly introduced, they are labeled as a danger to the local habitat. In these places, anglers are not allowed to return the fish if they caught it.

If you want to begin a hobby as a carp angler, you need to prepare familiarize yourself with carp rigs and look for natural bodies of water in your area that are carp habitat. They can be found in ponds, rivers, and lakes where there are many aquatic plants. Sometimes they also venture to brackish waters as long as the water is not too salty. In general though, they are known thrive in bodies of slow moving freshwater.

Flurry for Twitter for iPhone review

Flurry for Twitter is a new iPhone twitter app in the App Store that is just absolutely stunning in design. It features gorgeous animations, intuitive gestures, great sounds, and more. Flurry for Twitter is by no means "fully featured", and although I'm always one to argue that less is more, Ash Apps may have left out a little too much to justify Flurry's price.

Flurry for iPhone isn't your average Twitter app. Sure, it offers the basic functions of any Twitter app, but Flurry presents them in a unique and artistic way. Every swipe and tap offers a subtle sound that you actually want to hear and actions like refreshing your timeline and posting a tweet include animations that are almost addicting to watch. For example, tweets will load by flipping up your screen and your timeline with give the illusion of backing up when your create a tweet.

Unfortunately, the fancy gestures, sounds, and animations, aren't quite enough to make Flurry a compelling buy. One of the features I was most surprised to find missing from Flurry is auto-refresh. If you want to see if any new tweets have come in, even when you first open the app, you are required to pull down to refresh. Flurry also doesn't include little thumbnails of photos in your timeline even though this feature has become the norm in other Twitter apps. And one of the biggest deal-breakers off all -- no push notifications.

The good

  • Easy access to tweet actions by swiping on tweets
  • Fast, beautiful, and non-intrusive animations
  • Innovative Swipe-Back navigation system
  • Conversation include in Tweet details
  • Fun sounds
  • Multiple Accounts and Lists support
  • Instapaper, Pocket, and Readability support

The bad

  • Crashes at during the second screen of the tutorial at initial launch
  • No auto refresh
  • No thumbnail previews of images
  • No push notifications

The bottom line

Flurry for Twitter is a gorgeous Twitter app for the iPhone that has a lot of potential. But with highly important and valued features like auto refresh and push notifications missing, I can't recommend Flurry for anything more than eye candy -- and at $4.99, that's pretty expensive, especially when full-featured apps like Tweetbot, Twitterrific, and Twittelator Neue are available for less. However, if you have faith that developers will continue to add features to Flurry, you may want to grab it now since Twitter limits the number of tokens available to each 3rd party Twitter developer.

Low-Priced Marketing Campaign Options For Today's Businesses ...

It?s a whole new era in marketing. Brands no longer need to count on expensive marketing via television and print ad placements. Organizations are no longer tied to certain markets. The World Wide Web has offered a terrific prospect of economical, extremely targeted, and money-making opportunities for a lot of different types of businesses. Whether you?re managing a purely internet company or even an offline business, you?ve got a world of marketing campaign choices to take into account.

For some businesses, word-of-mouth still presents compelling outcomes such as opening new markets, increased sales, and brand recognition. For example, a small caf? or restaurant that?s new to a certain location can depend on customers to spread the excellent word about their establishment while a completely independent film can hope for more audiences when former moviegoers recommend the movie along with other people. It?s probably the most affordable kind of advertising that?s also random. Today?s word-of-mouth is taken on a brand new level via social media sites.

A few of the major brands use social media sites to even encourage clients. It?s a powerful way to convey a company?s gratitude to the market along with a reliable tactic to motivate consumers to talk about their experiences with all the brands and the products they use. Your business can set-up accounts on different social media sites and provide rewards (cash or points) for individuals who discuss their thoughts about your goods and services. In addition to supplying benefits, it?s also possible to think about the substitute to allow brand supporters to sell your products or services through tips on various programs.

An alternative choice you should not pass by is email marketing campaign. Email marketing is a great technique for building relationships together with your clients and keeping track of useful data for example the quantity of website visitors that go from being possible sales to actual sales. It?s a sort of campaign that will require experience to carry out which means that your company not just targets the required prospects but recognizes at the same time which promotions work and which of them do not.

The foundation of online marketing campaigns is the web site. These days, nearly all business and each entity has website. With more people these days depending upon the world wide web for their needs, you?d probably do your organization a disservice by not having a web site. However it can?t be just any web site with wonderful graphics and nice images and good information. It must be a direct response website, which is definitely optimised to obtain the preferred actions out of your website visitors. These actions might be from registering for an e-mail list or participating in online talk with purchasing a product or getting a service.

Given that web surfing has moved from a desktop and laptops to cell phones and tablets, it could even be preferable to use a responsive design on your website. This will likely allow your site to be viewed (and viewed well) on a variety of devices without reducing the size of the content.

With regards to your company?s digital marketing strategy, whether it?s using social networks or e-mail marketing, remember fondly the 3 simple words that will spell much better profits: always be optimising. And the best way to do this would be to hire the very best internet marketing agency to carry out your internet promotions.

Build a direct response website which is optimized to find the desired actions from a website traffic.

US agency shuts down El Paso credit union

Click photo to enlarge

A woman walks out of the El Paso's Federal Credit Union at 5900 Trowbridge on Friday.

A small El Paso credit union that for 60 years served workers of the old Asarco smelter was shut down Friday after it was found to be insolvent.

The National Credit Union Administration, an independent federal agency that supervises credit unions, said it determined that El Paso's Federal Credit Union, or EPFCU, had no chance of restoring viable operations after declining revenue.

The National Credit Union Administration said some of the credit union's accounts will be transferred to the El Paso Area Teachers Federal Credit Union. For accounts that aren't transferred, checks will be issued in a week to verified account holders. Deposits were federally insured up to $250,000.

Momentum shift? Akin regains 2 Mo. endorsements

(AP) ? Some of Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's prominent supporters are reversing course and backing Missouri GOP Senate candidate Todd Akin's embattled campaign against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.

Former Missouri Sens. Kit Bond and Jim Talent said Friday they are now behind the candidate they once shunned for his remarks on "legitimate rape."

"As a Missourian, I believe it is vital to have a senator and a Senate who will cooperate in creating jobs, repealing Obamacare , and controlling federal spending and the federal deficit," said Talent, who is Romney's adviser on Russia and defense policy.

"Todd can win," added Bond, who has endorsed Romney.

Earlier this week, Sen. Roy Blunt, a Missouri Republican who is Romney's liaison to Congress, endorsed Akin.

The trio would appear to be at odds with Romney, who suggested that Akin "accept their counsel" and leave the race back when they joined two other Missouri GOP elders ? former Sens. John Danforth and John Ashcroft ? in a formal statement forcefully urging Akin to exit the campaign. The Romney campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Akin has apologized for the rape comment for weeks but refused to leave the race. He lost the financial backing of the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the deep-pocketed Crossroads group affiliated with GOP strategist Karl Rove, and there are no signs either group has plans to re-enter the race.

Some members of the Missouri Republican political establishment are switching course, though not everyone. Danforth still has not backed Akin, and multiple attempts by The Associated Press on Friday to reach Ashcroft were unsuccessful.

In his own statement, Bond pledged to help oust Democrats from the Senate majority and said Akin's rape comments "were unacceptable but he's apologized, I believe his regret is sincere, and it is time to focus on the national stakes in this election."

The endorsements came as Akin was answering questions about his characterization Thursday of McCaskill as not being very "ladylike" in a Sept. 21 debate.

Contrasting the approach with her 2006 debates against then-Sen. Talent, Akin said McCaskill "had a confidence and was very much more sort of ladylike and all."

McCaskill said Akin's remarks left her "a little speechless."

"I'm hoping that people will weigh in and defend me that I was polite and calm. This wildcat, you know, furious and unladylike is kind of a headscratcher," she said.

But Akin did not back off his assertion.

"We've got a couple words in the English language, one is a gentleman and a lady," Akin said Friday. "I think those are pretty self-explanatory terms, and I was using them just as the English language uses those terms."

While some appeared offended at those words, "it seems to me the offensive thing is the voting record that's destructive to the people of our state," Akin said.

In the Missouri House, where Akin began his political career, the rules of debate require lawmakers to refer to colleagues as "lady, gentleman or representative."

Also Friday, Akin said he had been arrested during an anti-abortion protest more than two decades ago, but he didn't provide details of where or when the event occurred.

In a video circulating widely on the Internet, Akin is seen discussing his involvement in an anti-abortion demonstration and says, "You know, don't tell anybody I'm a jail bird." He also says in the video that "a bunch of us sat in front of these doors and the police gave us a ride to the free hotel for a while, and you know how it goes."

Asked at a news conference Friday in Kansas City to confirm the arrest, Akin said: "Yeah, well, certainly. Probably about 25 years ago or so I was involved in some peaceful protests. As I've made very clear I don't apologize for being pro-life. I stand up for the things I believe in."

Akin's comments have loomed large in Missouri's Senate race since shortly after he won the Aug. 7 Republican primary. They also have generated ripples through national politics, including the presidential race and Republicans' efforts to gain the four seats necessary to win control of the Senate from Democrats.

Democrats have attempted to link Akin's "ladylike" comment to his remark about "legitimate rape" to suggest he is insensitive to women and to help drive their own fundraising efforts.

The Democratic National Committee and Emily's List, which backs Democratic women who support abortion rights, both cited the remarks in fundraising emails Thursday. On Friday, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand highlighted Akin's remarks as the centerpiece of an online fundraising drive to raise $75,000 for McCaskill in two days.

Akin also received a recent fundraising boost, picking up the endorsement Thursday of the Senate Conservatives Fund, whose members pledged $290,000 for his campaign.

Permanent Fixes: Stinginess Is Not The Only Option (To Philanthropy)

In a September 19 WSJ article, Geoffrey A. Fowler reported that more billionaires are signing on to the idea, promoted by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, of giving away large portions, at least half, of their money.? Well, it is certainly more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35), but whether such?largess?is a better idea than investing the funds in new GDP-generating, job-creating, and government funding enterprises depends, in my opinion, on what they give it to, how well the recipients manage it, and what other options the donors have for investing the money.

The article included a puzzling and blog-post-inspiring quote from Gordon Moore, 83 year old founder of Intel and author of the famous Moore?s Law: ?"?it's a good idea and has shaken loose a lot of money that otherwise would have been tied up for a long time."? Well, only if somebody had it stuffed in a mattress somewhere or in a safety deposit box would it have been ?tied up,? because otherwise the money was supporting some endeavor or enterprise already. ?

I have no first-hand information about this, but it is very likely that donations of Messrs. Moore, Gates, Buffett, and other billionaires are in the form of shares of appreciated stock, donated unsold to avoid capital gains taxes and estate taxes, to a foundation, which might continue to hold the shares and use the dividends from them to support its work.? So, the money would still be ?tied up? in those shares of stock.? Or the foundation might sell the stock and use the proceeds from the sale in some new or existing charitable effort which might even involve hiring a lot of people.? In that case, somebody else will have to come up with money to buy the stock so that equivalent amount of money would still be ?tied up,? having previously been ?tied up? in something else.? Only if the overall transaction were so large as to result in a decline in the value of the stock would less money end up being ?tied up,? and that would be a bad thing.

Don?t get me wrong.? I believe we are stewards and not owners of our financial assets and responsible for using them wisely, voluntarily and systematically giving to worthy causes and people in need throughout our lives and, when possible, being personally involved in the work of the organizations and persons we give to and through.? These billionaires are generous to want to give the money away and spend time managing the gifts, and generosity always trumps stinginess. ??

But, stinginess?isn't?the only option.? If a wealthy person has a good idea for a new product or service that will be of benefit to humankind, investing money and time, hiring people, and taking risks to make it a reality, earning more money in the process, would not be less moral than giving away the money and would be better than irresponsible giving.? Such business development is no less important to the future than, and is a prerequisite for, philanthropy?and for tax revenues too, by the way.?

As an example of the point I am trying to make, think of George Vanderbilt, wealthy grandson of Cornelius, whom I wrote about in a July14, 2012 posting?on this blog.? Here is what I said:?
One bit of residue of the Vanderbilt fortune is Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC, built in the late 1800?s, the ?gilded age,? by grandson George. To many it seems to have been an extravagant indulgence (Check out this?recent?column by Mona Charen.), but he built a town to support the project, pushed the limits on technology, and employed thousands in the design and construction of it, artists and craftsmen and laborers, thereby revolutionizing the Western North Carolina economy. One hundred and forty years later, Biltmore Estate, a working farm and resort, employs 1700 people and hosts a million visitors annually from all over the world. Now that was a real jobs program!

I?m not arguing that George was virtuous for building Biltmore but just that, while he?didn't?live long enough to enjoy it, it was a worthwhile endeavor that paid off big for other people.? Had he just freely distributed the money to the citizens of Western North Carolina, he would have been widely celebrated and admired at the time but any positive effect would probably have long since disappeared.

Summing up the life of the infamously ruthless Commodore who made his fortune personally networking the nation with railroads and connecting its ports with steamships while driving down the cost of freight, I said this: "The Commodore lived into his eighties, rare for the time, but it?s too bad he?couldn't?have had an additional productive hundred years. If he had, the United States rather than Japan would have been the leader in high speed trains and Amtrak would never have been created."

A modern day Vanderbilt, smaller scale of course, recently introduced to me by a David Brooks column, is Elon Musk, entrepreneur extraordinaire, founder of Zip2, SpaceX, Tesla Motors, and PayPal and a philanthropist who has signed on to the pledge to give away at least half his fortune.? I just hope he?doesn't?give it all away before he runs out of ideas because he is a serious job creator and GDP generator.

Bill and Melinda Gates are apparently doing great work around the world in the fields of health and education.? Mr. Buffett is apparently giving much of his money to the Gates foundation.? If they all bring along their personal management skills with their money, I have no doubt that much good will be accomplished, many problems solved, and countless lives improved.? I thank and congratulate them.? But I would also be happy and offering congratulations if they had come up with another economy building, paradigm changing, job creating, idea such as MSDOS which launched the personal computer business and lifted far more people out of poverty than will ever be possible with charitable giving from their personal fortunes.

And here is another option to stinginess.? One curmudgeon billionaire quoted in the Fowler article, German shipping magnate Peter Kr?mer, said that individuals should not have the right to determine use of such large sums of money, that it should instead be taxed away and its use determined by the government.? I don?t like that idea either, nor apparently does Mr. Buffett since, although he has publicly announced support for a trivial increase in his income taxes, he is responsibly doing whatever he can to keep his vast personal fortune out of government hands which would disperse it completely in just a tad over one day.

Asia's budget airline boom bypasses China

HONG KONG (AP) ? When businesswoman Ren Hong flew home after a recent trip to Beijing on state-owned Air China, she was hoping for a decent inflight meal to tide her over until she got back to the spicy cuisine of her native Sichuan province.

The airline's meager offering, which was little more than "just bread," was a galling experience for Ren who wondered why the carrier didn't cut both the pretense of full service and the price of the ticket.

Her gripe highlights how Chinese travelers have been left out of the massive budget airline boom that has swept Asia. From almost none a decade ago, the region now has more than 50 low cost carriers. The fast growth of no-frills airlines such as AirAsia and the slew of recent start-ups including Singapore's Scoot and AirAsia Japan underline surging demand in the region for affordable air travel. The rise of budget carriers in Asia follows similar expansion in Europe and North America in previous decades.

But in China, where the government still keeps tight control of the rapidly growing airline industry, three big state-owned carriers dominate. Aviation authorities' efforts to shield them, as well as keep the industry from growing too rapidly and compromising safety, mean travelers like Ren pay up to twice as much.

"I've found that flight tickets domestically sometimes are more expensive than the international ones due to monopolization and less competition," said Ren, a 37-year-old who runs an export business and also blogs about her travels in her spare time. Even for tickets on Shanghai-based Spring Airlines, considered China's only discount carrier, "their price is just as same as the big airlines" during high season, she said.

While Chinese travelers are benefiting from foreign budget airlines flying to some Chinese cities, analysts and consultants say government policy measures are preventing the domestic aviation market from opening up too quickly. China's domestic market is one of the biggest prizes in Asia's travel industry, with 264 million passengers last year, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of China, which forecasts the number will grow about six-fold by 2030.

"The domestic market in China has more or less remained a fortress," Xiaowen Fu, an aviation expert at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, said at a recent conference in Macau organized by the Sydney-based CAPA-Center for Aviation.

Like other essential industries in China, the policy measures are aimed at protecting the chosen few national champions from too much competition. China's three major state-owned airlines, Beijing-based Air China Ltd., Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines Corp. and Guangzhou-based China Southern Airlines Ltd., carried 191 million passengers among them in 2011. But in the first half of 2012 their profits collapsed because of higher fuel prices and foreign currency losses. The rest of the market is divided between smaller state carriers ? some owned by the big three ? and a handful of private operators.

An unsurprising outcome of the cossetted state airline industry is a perpetual sense of grievance among travelers at poor service and lack of choice.

"The food on Chinese airlines is worse and more basic than it is on the international airlines," said 25-year-old Li Peng, who recently quit his job in Beijing to travel overseas for a year.

"And when the flight is delayed, I never get any feedback after my complaints. Many flights are delayed more than two hours" he said. "I do wish there were more budget airlines, especially in China," he said.

China's civil aviation policy hinders the country's budget airline industry in two ways, according to experts. First, it makes it almost impossible for a private company to start a new airline. Second, the policy limits growth by existing airlines, including state-run carriers, through measures including requiring approvals for new airplanes and routes.

For airlines operating in China, "they've got constraints whether it be on operating strategy, or what they're allowed to do at the airports, or how they're allowed to recruit pilots, or what the airport charges," said Con Korfiatis, director of Flight Ideas Consulting. "So the low-cost carrier explosion in China is still being constrained."

In contrast, discount airlines continue to spread their wings elsewhere in Asia. Three started flying in Japan this year, including Peach Aviation and local ventures from Malaysia's AirAsia and Australia's Jetstar. Also taking flight in 2012 were Singapore Airlines' Scoot, Thai Airways International's Thai Smile and AirAsia Philippines. Next year, Indonesia's Lion Air plans to start flights on Malindo Airways, a low-cost Malaysia operation, the company said earlier this month.

Even China Eastern Airlines Co. is joining in, although its low-cost carrier is a joint venture with Qantas subsidiary Jetstar that will be based in Hong Kong rather than mainland China.

The Civil Aviation Authority of China hinted in July that it would support budget airlines by loosening price controls. But director Li Jiaxiang stopped short of announcing any major policy reforms.

The measures aren't just aimed at China's private or discount carriers ? they also apply to China's state-owned carriers. Analysts say policies are designed to prevent unfettered growth. Authorities clamped down following a spell of supercharged growth during which the number of passengers expanded by 40 percent in 2003-2004. Such red-hot growth puts tremendous strain on pilots and infrastructure such as air traffic control and airports, especially on heavily congested air routes between major Chinese cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

"The market is already growing at 11-16 percent domestically at average fares," said Mario Hardy, a vice president at research firm UBM Aviation. "Imagine if an AirAsia or a Spring was able tomorrow to lower that price by half. How many more people would be travelling?"

Hardy and other experts and industry insiders believe that Chinese authorities will allow the aviation market to open up gradually so that there's enough time to build up the required infrastructure. China is building 82 new airports and renovating 101 others in a five-year plan that runs until 2015.

"Otherwise it will be a mess," Hardy said. "It would be chaos."

Until then, travelers like Ren, the businesswoman and travel blogger, will have to put up with higher prices. Ren is thinking of going to India on her next trip but is disappointed with the limited options. She could fly with Air China at a cost of 4,000-5,000 yuan ($$635-$790) round trip. Or she could pay 2,000 yuan ($320) on AirAsia ? but she would need to change planes at AirAsia's home base in Malaysia.

"It's annoying," said Ren. But "life is not perfect and I have no choice. I could not ask for the flight to be both cheap and offer the perfect route."

Increased hospital infections linked to nurse burnout

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year nearly 100,000 hospitalized patients die from infections acquired while undergoing treatment for other conditions. While many factors may contribute to the phenomenon, nurse staffing (i.e., the number of patients assigned to a nurse) has been implicated as a major cause.

A recent study by Dr. Jeannie P. Cimiotti of Rutgers College of Nursing and co-researchers concludes that the degree of "burnout" experienced by nurses could relate directly to the frequency with which patients acquire infections during hospital stays. Focusing exclusively on urinary tract and surgical site infections, the researchers found that while a significant correlation existed between the occurrence of such infections and the number of patients assigned to nurses, nurse staffing became less of a factor after accounting for nurse burnout.

From a sample of 161 acute care hospitals in Pennsylvania and an average of 45 nurses working at each sampled hospital, Cimiotti and her team measured nurse burnout using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey. According to Maslach's theory, a critical component of burnout in nurses and other health care professionals is "emotional exhaustion." Emotional exhaustion is associated with emotional and cognitive detachment from work as a mechanism for coping with the demands and responsibilities of the job.

"We hypothesize that the cognitive detachment associated with high levels of burnout may result in inadequate hand hygiene practices and lapses in other infection control procedures among registered nurses," the researchers suggest. The researchers found that every 10 percent increase in burned-out nurses in an acute care hospital increases the rate of urinary tract infections by nearly one per 1,000 patients and increases the rate of surgical site infections by more than two per 1,000 patients.

"These findings are both statistically and clinically significant," the researchers posit. "If the proportion of nurses with high burnout could be reduced to 10 percent from the average 30 percent, some 4,160 infections would be prevented ?, leading to an estimated savings of $41 million." Not to mention the saving of many lives.

To reduce nurse burnout, the researchers recommend the implementation of organizational changes that effectively build job engagement. Examples include educational interventions, performance feedback, and social support.

This study is quite significant since in represents the first time nurse burnout has been associated with secondary infections.

In addition to Cimiotti, the research team included Drs. Linda H. Aiken, Douglas M. Sloane, and Evan S. Wu, each from the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. The research was supported by funding from the National Institute of Nursing Research--National Institutes of Health.
