NRF Predicts Steady Growth For Retail ... - Transworld Business

As projected by?National Retail Federation?s (NRF) monthly Global Port Tracker report, import cargo volume at the nation?s major retail container ports can expect strong year-over-year growth. The report, produced by?Hackett Associates, expects the volume to increase going into the summer and back-to-school season. US ports handled?1.18 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEU) in March, a 14% boost from February, and an 8.5% rise over March 2011. Looking forward, June is predicted to field 1.3 million TEU, up 4%; July up 1.8% to 1.35 million TEU; with August seeing 1.42 million and September 1.45 million TEU, a boost of 7.2% and 8.7%, respectively.

?Consumers are spending despite gas prices and other economic concerns, so retailers are stocking up to meet the demand,? says Jonathan Gold, vice president for supply chain and customs policy for NRF. ?These numbers show imports growing through the back-to-school season and even into the beginning of the shipping cycle for the holiday season. That?s a sign that retailers are expecting a good year.?

NRF forecasts 2012 retail sales will grow 3.4 percent to $2.53 trillion.
