Mozilla says a slew of carriers and handset makers set to support Firefox OS

Sure it's not as catchy as "Boot to Gecko," but Mozilla's newly-christened Firefox OS has already gained favor with a number of carriers, including Deutsche Telekom, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia, Telefónica and Telenor -- as previously reported, Telefonica-owned Vivo is set to introduce the earliest handsets early next year in Brazil. On the manufacturing side of things, ZTE and TCL Communication Technology (Alcatel One Touch) have signed on to make phones based on the HTML5-powered mobile operating system. Firefox OS will be positioned as a low-priced, entry-level alternative to leading mobile operating systems.

Cano's HR helps Yankees?stop White Sox

NEW YORK (AP) - Phil Hughes fought the 95 degrees on the thermometer with zeros on the scoreboard.

Hughes pitched eight efficient innings, Robinson Cano hit a tiebreaking two-run homer after wasting a chance with the bases loaded his first time up and the New York Yankees again rode the long ball to a 4-2 win Sunday over the Chicago White Sox for a series split between division leaders.

"He was throwing strikes, working quick," Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter said. "It was good for us because it was hot out there. He was in control the entire game."

Eric Chavez connected for a two-run drive off Gavin Floyd in the second inning, helping New York raise its major league-leading total to 124 home runs. The power surge helped make Hughes a winner on the Yankees' 66th Old-Timers' Day.

Coming off eight scoreless innings in his previous start, Hughes (9-6) gave up two runs in the first inning. He then settled in nicely to limit the hard-hitting White Sox to just three more hits over his final seven innings.

"Sometimes they're not going to have their best stuff and they got to figure out a way to get through it," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "And that's also a process, too - figuring out how to get through things. And today he did. That's a good sign."

Hughes followed Hiroki Kuroda and Ivan Nova in giving the Yankees three quality starts from a rotation that took a couple of big hits Wednesday - CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte went on the disabled list on the same day.

"It was great to see Phil pitch well today," Sabathia said.

Freddy Garcia returns to the rotation Monday, starting for Pettitte. The lefty is out for at least two months with a broken leg.

Rafael Soriano pitched the ninth for his 18th save in 19 chances this season.

Cano, elected an All-Star starter by the fans, has homered in nine of his last 14 games and entered Sunday hitting .367 in 13 games since June 17. But when he came up with the bases loaded and none out in the first inning he hit a tapper back to Floyd that was turned into a slick 1-2-3 double play. Cano has only one hit in 14 at-bats (.071) with the bases full this season.

"I don't think about that," Cano said of his struggles with the bases loaded. "It's hard to do it all."

Cano homered in the third off Floyd (6-8) and the Yankees won the final two games of the four-game series.

"This was a long, hot week, a lot of energy spent here," Paul Konerko said. "When you win the first two games of a four-game set, you'd like to get that third game, but they're a good club, obviously."

Teammates Curtis Granderson and Jeter will join Cano as starters for New York in the All-Star game July 10 in Kansas City. Sabathia was voted onto the team by his peers but a groin strain will keep him sidelined. He said he would attend the game with his family, though.

Jeter went 1 for 5, dropping his batting average below .300 for the first time since April 8. He's hitting .299 after being at .340 on June 1st and above .400 in May.

The AL Central-leading White Sox landed Adam Dunn, Konerko and Chris Sale on the AL squad. Right-hander Jake Peavy is among the five candidates for the final roster spot.

Alejandro De Aza led off the game with a sharp double and scored on Kevin Youkilis' single, standing up and eluding the reach of catcher Russell Martin, who tried to make a swipe tag. There was reason De Aza was out of range: replays clearly showed he never stepped on home plate.

After two outs, Alex Rios singled home another run for a 2-0 lead.

Wiping his brow with his sleeve and tugging at his uniform after nearly every pitch in the 95-degree heat, Floyd pitched from behind in the count for much of his 5 1-3 innings.

He was also in trouble the moment his toe touched the rubber, giving up consecutive singles and a walk to start. But Cano grounded into a double play and Nick Swisher struck out to extend Floyd's scoreless streak to 14 1-3 innings.

That would end in the second. Raul Ibanez led off with a single and Chavez connected for his sixth homer.

"Even though they got him a couple of times, he still pitched well," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "He battled, got out of some tough spots, even in the first. We just couldn't mount anything after that first inning."

Cano lined a shot deep into the seats in the third, a batter after Mark Teixeira drew one of Floyd's season-high five walks.

"Just take advantage when they throw a pitch over the plate," Cano said.

Mass extinctions reset the long-term pace of evolution

ScienceDaily (July 2, 2012) ? A new study indicates that mass extinctions affect the pace of evolution, not just in the immediate aftermath of catastrophe, but for millions of years to follow. The study's authors, University of Chicago's Andrew Z. Krug and David Jablonski, will publish their findings in the August issue of the journal Geology.

Scientists expected to see an evolutionary explosion immediately following a mass extinction, but Krug and Jablonski's findings go far beyond that.

"There's some general sense that the event happens, there's some aftermath and then things return to normal," said Krug, a research scientist in geophysical sciences at UChicago. But in reality, Krug said, "Things don't return to what they were before. They operate at a different pace, sometimes more rapidly, other times more slowly. Evolutionary rates shift, and that shift is permanent until the next mass extinction."

Krug and Jablonski's suggestion that the potential for rapid speciation and expansion of survivors and new groups of organisms in the "emptier" world following a mass extinction "is a reasonable possibility as one source of rate change," said paleontologist Richard Bambach of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, who was not directly involved in the UChicago study.

The long-term evolutionary patterns of species diversification following mass extinctions are poorly understood. Paleontologists have extensively debated whether diversity has increased over the last 251 million years, which followed the most devastating mass extinction in Earth history, Bambach said

Inconsistent classifications

Scientists have been putting Latin names on fossils since 1758, often inconsistently. Methods and tools have changed with the times, but old names often remain. The UChicago paleontologists have combed through seemingly endless volumes of research papers and countless museum drawers in an ongoing attempt to standardize these classifications.

For their Geology study, Krug and Jablonski analyzed contemporary groups of organisms from the end of the Pleistocene Epoch, which ended approximately 10,000 years ago, to the Jurassic Period, which began approximately 200 million years ago. The availability of globally abundant data on bivalves, a group that includes clams, oysters and scallops, set the study's time boundaries.

"With some groups, like sea urchins or corals, you just couldn't do it because the numbers aren't big enough," said Jablonski, the William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Service Professor in Geophysical Sciences. When he and Krug statistically plotted the origination rate of new bivalve species at 50 million-year intervals, they found that all the species evolved at a fairly steady rate for millions of years. Then the bivalve groups show a sudden increase or decrease in the rates at which new species evolved. These sudden shifts marked the occurrence of a mass extinction. "They settle back down to a different rate from what was before, and they do it multiple times, corresponding to each mass extinction," Jablonski said.

Theoretically, the origination rates of the organisms might have "been all over the map," with evolutionary rates varying in a random or chaotic style, but they didn't. "It's surprising how organized the pattern is," he said.

Krug and Jablonski's perspective of the data is somewhat different from Bambach's. These perspectives are "not contradictory, but complementary, ways of looking at the data," Bambach said. "One of the valuable things about their work is that they record the pattern and pattern change during intervals that I lump together."

Bambach bases his work on older data compilations that include the animal kingdom as a whole, while Krug and Jablonski use their new, carefully vetted data from bivalve mollusks.

Setting a new pace

"There's been a lot of talk about the evolutionary role of mass extinctions, but it's like the weather. Everyone talks about it, but no one does much about it," Jablonski joked.

"No one has really thought about it in terms of these downstream dynamics, once the smoke has cleared and ecosystems have found a new equilibrium, for want of a better word. But the wonderful thing is that when they find a new equilibrium, it's a different evolutionary pace from the one that prevailed for the preceding 50 million years. The survivors of the mass extinction, or the world they inherited, is so different from what went before that the rate of evolution is permanently changed."

Krug and Jablonski's research builds upon the work of UChicago's David Raup, the Sewell L. Avery Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in Geophysical Sciences, and Michael Foote, professor in Geophysical Sciences.

In 1978, Raup published a method for determining the extinction rate of organisms. His method involved monitoring the survivorship of a group of organisms that had all originated during a specific time period and quantifying when they disappeared. It would be like collecting census data for all individuals born on Jan. 1, 1899, tracking their longevity, then finding that the 1918 influenza epidemic had produced a spike in this group's mortality.

Foote followed up in 2001, showing that Raup's method worked equally well for determining origination rates as it did for extinction rates. One simply needed to use the method in reverse, tracking the time since origination of a group of co-occurring lineages as opposed to the time until extinction. Now comes Krug and Jablonski's latest study, finding that the evolutionary "birth rate" was also reset at major catastrophes. "It's very Chicago-esque," Jablonski said.

Fatigue, injuries finally slow Italy in Euro final

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) -Fatigue finally caught up with Italy. Forced by injuries to end the match with 10 men, the Azzurri had no answer for Spain's passing wizardry in the European Championship final.

Even "Super" Mario Balotelli couldn't break free to rescue the Azzurri this time, and the result, a 4-0 loss, was the most lopsided final in tournament history, eclipsing West Germany's 3-0 win over the Soviet Union in 1972.

Still, for a squad that entered this tournament without any big expectations and was hobbled by a match-fixing scandal, Italy can hardly be disappointed with a runner-up finish.

But coach Cesare Prandelli couldn't have been pleased with the way his squad sat back with eight men behind the ball in the opening quarter hour, which led to David Silva's opening goal in the 14th minute.

Seven minutes later, Italy's dependable right back Giorgio Chiellini limped off with an apparent left hamstring injury, the same problem that kept him out of the quarterfinal victory over England.

Midfielder Daniele De Rossi, who had to exit the England match with a sciatic nerve problem, also appeared far from 100 percent, and Spain defender Jordi Alba made it 2-0 in the 41st, racing past Leonardo Bonucci and shooting around helpless Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

De Rossi and defender Andrea Barzagli were so exhausted before the match that they didn't even take part in Saturday's final training session. Also, for the second consecutive game Prandelli presented his match strategy to the squad on video, simply because the team did not have enough energy to do it on the pitch.

Prandelli has preached an attack-at-all-costs mentality much like Spain, but after requiring 120 minutes and a shootout to beat England in the quarterfinals, then another physical victory over Germany in the semifinals, the strategy appeared to take its toll.

While Antonio Cassano threatened occasionally in the first half, he was then replaced by Antonio Di Natale to start the second half. Having had minor heart surgery in November, Cassano was out for more than five months. He returned in April and still does not have more than an hour in his legs.

Di Natale provided a brief spark at the start of the second half, but when midfielder Thiago Motta fell to the pitch untouched grasping his right hamstring on the hour mark, it spelled the end for Italy's comeback chances.

Motta, who had some physical problems in training last week, had to be carried off on a stretcher, and Italy had already used all three of its substitutions, leaving the Azzurri with 10 men.

Balotelli's best chance came midway through the first half, but Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas pushed Federico Balzaretti's cross away just as the 21-year-old striker was lining up a header from close range.

A goal would have given Balotelli sole possession of the tournament scoring lead. Still, his three goals left him level with four other players, and give Italy hope for the future.

Bailout envoy urges Greece to speed up reforms

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? A senior official from the European Central Bank on Monday urged Greece's new government to avoid further delays in implementing major structural reforms.

ECB board member Joerg Asmussen is in Athens as the struggling country's new coalition government holds talks with its rescue creditors. The government is seeking to amend Greece's bailout program as it battles a fifth year of recession.

Asmussen, who met Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras, said Greece should not "stretch the pain" of reforms any further.

"If one has identified that something needs to be done, do this quickly," Asmussen told a financial conference in Athens. "Don't wait. Don't stretch the pain ... because this is better to restore confidence in an economy."

Greece's new conservative-led government was formed quickly after June 17 general elections that ended months of political uncertainty, but saw a sharp rise in support for parties opposed to the bailout.

New Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, who is convalescing at home following an eye operation, argues that the terms of bailout agreements that started in 2010 have failed to stimulate growth.

Asmussen, however, said failure to tackle the underlying problems of Greece's crisis ? in public administration and competitiveness ? would only result in more pain.

"The problems do not go away. Instead markets lose their trust in official statements," he said. "Governments have to take even more drastic policy measures to win back credibility."

Greece narrowly avoided bankruptcy earlier this year, before winning a major debt structuring deal with banks and additional bailout money from rescue lenders ? other eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund.

Debt inspectors from the so-called troika ? EU, IMF and ECB ? are due in Athens this week to meet the new government, that is backed by Samaras' conservatives, traditional rival Socialists and a small left wing party.
