LeBron James says he's still striving to be better

(AP) — LeBron James was desperate for some time away from basketball, so he packed up his family for a vacation this summer. Sun and sand. Rest and relaxation.

Pen and paper, too.

It didn't take long until the NBA's MVP took a break from taking a break.

Considered the best player in the game, James remains obsessed with getting better. That's why, on the verge of starting his 11th professional season and fourth with the Miami Heat, James fully expects the 2013-14 campaign to be his best one yet. He knows there's no shortage of challengers aiming to knock both him and his team off their respective mountaintops.

"I'm nitpicking now, obviously, at my own game," James said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I want that. I want to be uncomfortable. I want to continue to push the envelope and get to a point where I feel like I'm trying to master everything. Now, I can't be the greatest at everything. There's better rebounders than me. There's better passers than me. There's better scorers than me. But I want to be able to maximize my potential in everything I do."

So that's why, when he finally got some down time this summer — after the season and before his wedding to Savannah Brinson — James didn't allow himself to totally step away from the game.

Even while on vacation, and with a notepad at his side, James broke down every Heat playoff game, every moment of postseason matchup last season against Milwaukee, Chicago, Indiana and San Antonio.

When he saw something that wasn't just right, he wrote it down to further analyze later.

"I push myself," James said. "There are ways I can get better. I would write down the exact time, the exact play, the exact quarter, the plays where I could have did something better."

At 6-foot-8 and 250 pounds, a marriage of size and speed that many covet, the reality is that James probably is not going to get much better physically. His shooting has improved. He's talked plenty in recent months about becoming a better free-throw shooter. His post game has been reinvented. His defense is exceptional.

Where James is getting better, those around him say, is in the thinking department.

"Some skills may get sharper, but where his growth is going to take off for the next 10 years is mentally," Heat forward Shane Battier said. "He's talking about situations now that he wasn't talking about two years ago when I first got here and understanding how to best beat those situations. Everyone always lauds his basketball IQ, but his experience is now really coming through."

Four MVP awards. Two championships. Two Finals MVPs. By the end of this season — after which he could choose to be a free agent again, though he swears that he doesn't know what will happen next summer — he could be among the top 25 scorers in NBA history. Based on jersey sales, there's no more popular basketball player on the planet, something few would have imagined after all the scorn directed his way when he chose to sign with Miami. And he's not even 30 yet.

"He's a special dude," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "He's always going to continue to stay in a state of uncomfortableness. This summer was a busy summer for him and yet he always finds time to get his work in, his conditioning. He wants to add different elements."

One thing he added this summer was a diamond-crusted wedding band.

James' wedding finally happened in September, and out of respect to the couple, guests still are leery to talk about many specifics of that night at a San Diego resort. James thought San Diego would be the ideal spot after holding some youth camps there and seeing how the weather, almost without fail, is perfect.

"The best part of the wedding was probably after the wedding," James said. "It turned into a party. Basically, that's all it was. It wasn't nothing but a big old party. We gave each other our rings and after that it turned into a big old party with all my friends and family. That's all."

On Tuesday night, he gets another ring, his second NBA title ring.

And he insists that he'll do whatever it takes for this season to end with another party.

"The man above has given me God-given ability and talent, obviously," James said. "I want to take full advantage of it."

Finnair lowers 2013 guidance because of low demand

HELSINKI (AP) — Finnair says the uncertain economic climate in Europe and weaker growth in Asia are expected to hit its full-year performance, with turnover falling to below 2012 levels and the possibility that it will show an operational loss.

The Finnish national carrier says fuel costs were expected to remain high in the last quarter of 2013 and that the demand for air traffic would only "grow moderately." It gave no figures.

The airline's previous guidance said it expected an operational profit this year.

Finnair PLC, which is due to release its third-quarter result Friday, has embarked on several cost-cutting programs, including substantial job cuts, as it struggles against high costs and tough competition from budget airlines.

RUMOR Has It Beyoncé MAY Release A New Album In December

"We’ve got one or two records ...”

SO … a Columbia Records CEO sat down to chat with Billboard magazine about the forthcoming December release of Céline Dion‘s new album and he kinda/sorta may have hinted significantly that Beyoncé, too, might be releasing her new album in December as well. The CEO never mentions Bey by name but he does promise that Columbia is working on releasing a big album from a major artist on their roster (the Billboard interviewer tries to pin him down to mentioning Bey‘s name). The only big artist on the roster who has been teasing the release of a new album sooner rather than later is Beyoncé. HMMM. Click below to read exactly what he said and let the speculation commence.

In a recent interview with Billboard, CEO/chairman of Columbia Rob Stringer, obviously, dodged questions about what specific albums he might have in the chamber for Q4. But it doesn’t take a crack sleuth to figure out that he’s probably referring to Beyoncé‘s long-in-the-works fifth studio album. While talking about Celine Dion‘s new album, also set for December release, Stringer added, “And we’ve got one or two records, which will be coming out that we’re working on.” Billboard notes that he said this “cryptically.” “I feel good about those records, too — we’ve got records lined up that hopefully will make the beginning of December.” Billboard asks, ”Wait, more than one? I can think of one right now that has been likely for a long time now.” Stringer responds, “I would never be quoted as saying anything to do with that [laughs].” Talking about the pressures of Q4 releases, he goes on to say that there’s a lot of fall competition including Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, One Direction and Eminem. “And then it’s almost like, ‘who’s got the biggest hit songs going into Christmas?’” The lid has been kept tight on Bey’s new album, as only snippets of info has come out, with Diplo once stating that she scrapped a song he was working on with her, and Ne-Yo saying that “Beyonce’s the kind of artist where you’re not gonna see it till it’s right. And her fans — they love her so they’ll be patient.”

While I’m hopeful for a new album in December, I’m not quite sure I can let myself believe it just yet. The teasing by this CEO is interesting but it really doesn’t amount to much. Bey will be ending her current Mrs. Carter Show World Tour in December and then … she’ll release a new album? It’s possible but … I dunno. Stay tuned. We should know something more concrete sometime soon. I say, hold off on the celebrating until we get more evidence (or better yet, official confirmation) of a new Beyoncé album this year. That said, if Bey does drop a new album in December would you die or what?

Carrie Underwood Receives Artist Achievement Award at the T.J. Martell Foundation Honors Gala

Stepping out for a good cause, Carrie Underwood attended the T.J. Martell Foundation Honors Gala at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City on Tuesday (October 22).

The "Blown Away" singer looked gorgeous on the red carpet in a short-sleeved, shimmering blue dress with nude heels and a matching clutch.

At the 38th annual event, the 30-year-old songstress was honored with the Artist Achievement Award. According to the organization, the T.J. Martell Foundation is the music industry's largest foundation that funds innovative medical research focused on finding cures for leukemia, cancer and AIDS.

Unfortunately, the day didn't start so glamorous for Carrie, as she tweeted, "My morning was going so smoothly...then I stabbed myself in the eye with my mascara wand...now all day people will think I'm winking at them."
