Creating White Spaces: Marci's Feeling Shaky...

?Marci commented on my last post --

I am shakily trying to take my first steps to do a huge purge of craft supplies. We want to sell our house and move closer to my job and out of the city traffic. I look at all of the art supplies I have collected over the last 20 years and I feel like I'm giving away my children. Help!

Marci's use of the word "shakily" resonated.? I understand.? It's the perfect word to describe the dilemma of wanting to get rid of and keep the same items.? As I went through the first big purge here (first, because we are now on round two), my emotions were all over the place.? I loved getting rid of things, like my Cuttlebug and Xyron,? that I hadn't used in years.? I wondered what took me so long.? But I hated selling my Scrapbox and I wasn't thrilled to sell so many stamp sets and see almost all embellishments, paper, etc. walk out the door.? I worked hard to buy that stuff.?

So I tried to keep my eye on the prize -- in this case the prize will be living in a new home.? A home close to shops and restaurants and a movie theater.? I love the burst of energy I get when I am strolling outdoors surrounded by people.? It is so much nicer than being in a mall, where the sound echoes and I can feel overwhelmed.? Or in our very quiet house.

I had to remind myself of the prize this weekend as I went through our kitchen a final time.? Out went almost all cookbooks.? I kept a Betty Crocker cookbook that my Mom had.? I remember reading it as a child.? There isn't a recipe in there that I would make, but... ? I also kept a Julia Child cookbook that my brother in law gave me for Christmas.? He has since died, and it is precious to me.? I kept the cookbook that contains the brownie cheesecake recipe that my family loves.? Although I know the recipe by heart, and the cookbook is stained from use, I love the other recipes and the book has meaning to me.? These cookbooks aren't my children but they have value to me.? The other 50 or so?? Gone.? You can find them at a future book sale by Fairfax County library.

So Marci -- is the future, the prize of moving out of the city and closer to work enough to get you to purge your craft supplies?? If the answer seems like yes, but the "but" keeps you from getting it done, there may be other solutions to help you through the dilemma.

1. Find your "must keep" items and box up the rest and put in storage.? You can then decide whether holding on to them is worth the storage fee.? This is what I am doing with some non crafty items.? Just knowing that I had this option helped and I ended up getting rid of more than planned because I want to keep down the cost of moving and storage. ?

2.? There are stampers who can't afford a lot of supplies.? Or a charity that would benefit from the sale of your supplies.? The good feeling of helping others may be enough to give you the resolve to get this done.
?
3.? Think about this issue during your long commute.? Imagine all the extra time you'll have when you move, the ease of getting out of the city traffic.? Sometimes the process of reminding ourselves of the goal gives us that little push...

4.? Or you can do what I did.? Leap into it with no real plan.? We bought the new house first and then I had to deal with what I had done.? While I cannot recommend this approach, it does force the issue!

The readers here may have other suggestions.? Anyone else have thoughts on Marci's dilemma?

She is believed to be the first girl in state history to play the position in a regular-season game.

DiMeglio played two snaps, both handoffs from the shot gun formation, in the final minutes of South Plantation's 31-14 victory over Nova.

With fans chanting "Put Erin in," DiMeglio entered the game with about 1:40 left to play.

Calif. Legislature Passes Major LTC Insurance Reform Bill

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Aug. 31 -- The California Department of Insurance issued the following news release:

Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones today announced that the California State Legislature has passed AB 999, authored by Assembly Aging and Long-Term Care Committee Chair Mariko Yamada (D-Davis). The bill, sponsored by Commissioner Jones and the California Department of Insurance, protects consumers from excessive premium rate volatility by modifying the long-term care insurance (LTC) premium rate development process. The measure also allows consumers to make more informed decisions about buying a policy by giving them the chance to review language before purchasing one.

"The rising cost of long-term care insurance is one of the most pressing issues facing senior consumers today," said Commissioner Jones. "What's most disturbing is the size of long-term care rate increases. They threaten the ability of many seniors, especially those on fixed incomes, to maintain or purchase long-term care insurance. AB 999 provides for additional transparency and protections related to long-term care insurance rate increases. I want to thank Assembly Member Mariko Yamada for her leadership in carrying this legislation."

"AB 999 brings needed transparency to the long-term care insurance market and strengthens the Insurance Commissioner's authority to protect consumers from the excessive premium rate hikes that have long plagued the industry," said Assembly Member Yamada. "On behalf of thousands of current policyholders, and millions of California's "seniors-in-waiting", I applaud Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones for sponsoring this legislation."

Long-term care insurance was first sold in California in the early 1980's. Since it was a new product, insurers had no historical experience upon which to rely when setting initial premium rates. As a result, pricing of LTC policies was often based upon what were later found to be inaccurate assumptions. As insurers gained more experience in the market, premium rates increase to compensate for those initial inaccuracies.

In 2000, the Legislature passed SB 898 to stabilize what became escalating rates. However, the rate stabilization features passed years before are not completely restoring predictability as intended to the long-term care insurance market today. Among other things, AB 999 would prevent insurers from passing poor investment returns through to taxpayers and eliminate the practice of insurers "cherry-picking" a small group of policies to justify large rate increases, among other strong consumer protections.

"I urge Governor Jerry Brown to sign this necessary legislation aimed at protecting California's seniors," said Commissioner Jones.

NAM Summit in Tehran: Iranian Interpreter ... - Morocco World News

By Larbi Arbaoui

Morocco World News

Tinejdad, August 31, 2012

According to Iranian media, the Iranian Radio and Television Corporation manipulated the Persian interpretation of the speech of the Egyptian president Mohammed Mursi, delivered in the Non-Aligned Summit in Tehran. This manipulation was aimed at fitting in with the Iranian regime?s rhetoric.

During Morsi?s speech, broadcast by official Channel One in Farsi, the translator tampered with the immediate translation of Morsi?s speech declining to translate the Egyptian president?s severe attack on the Syrian president?s regime.

In an interview with the Al Arabiya, Amine Maqdam, Iranian media activist, said that the translator, who looked ?confused? while translating Morsi?s speech, has replaced ?Syria? by ?Bahrain? when translating the president?s speech about the Syrian crisis, and deliberately used ?Al Sahwa Al Islamiya? (Islamic Awakening) instead of Arab Spring.

In stark and deliberate distortion of Morsi?s speech, the Official Iranian TV deleted the four Caliphs when Morsi started his speech by offering prayers to the Prophet Mohamed (PBUH), his companions and the four righteous caliphs Abu Bakr, Omar, Othman and Ali.

Iranian media also confirmed that the official Iranian TV manipulated the speeches delivered by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and UN General Assembly President Nasser Abdul Aziz on the Syrian crisis.

Posts on social media denounced the deliberate distortion of the speech of the Egyptian president by the Iranian official TV saying that these acts may create tension between both countries and exacerbate the religious split between Shiites and Sunnis.

Relations between the two countries (Iran and Egypt) were broken after the Iranian Revolution and Egypt?s 1979 peace treaty with Israel

Reader rants: Cagereaders weigh in on Frankie Edgar?s fight, GSP?s return and more from the MMA world

With an unbelievable few weeks of MMA, Cagereaders had some really, really strong opinions. Because of your thoughts, Cagewriter decided it was a perfect time to bring back Reader Rants. Drawn from Cagewriter's Facebook page, here are thoughts from Cagewriter's readers. What are you ranting about this week? Tell us on Facebook, and you may be on our next Reader Rants.

Frankie Edgar is moving to featherweight and getting an immediate title shot against Jose Aldo at UFC 153. What say you, Cagereaders?

Interesting move for Frankie. If he doesn't win, then where does he go from there. I guess one challenge at a time? -- Mark Jimerson

Frankie has a huge chance don't count him out! -- Monzeil Jhamal Flemming

Jon Jones' reported request to Dana White to get Chael Sonnen to cool it with the trash talk also got you talking.

I don't know if I buy this story. There has been so much Jones hate, and I am sure this post will draw even more. This one sounds like BS to me. -- Eric Chism

I wonder if this is a sign of things to come with jones? Can't believe he wouldn't take the fight! I don't blame dana for feeling the way he does. I think jones is a terrific fighter, but wonder if character flaws will be a problem. I'll be watching. -- Kevin Armitage

Whether he deserves it or not, Sonnen is now the uncrowned 205 lb champ until Jones proves otherwise. Refusing to accept a challenge is the same as forfeiting. -- Jason Zachary

Georges St-Pierre was medically cleared to fight. Will he be back to his former self? Cagereaders weighed in.

I hope not. I hope he will fight to win instead of fight to not lose his belt. Maybe knowing that Condit has the interim belt it will motivate him to prove he deserves to be the champion. -- David Bernetich

There is no upside to the time off, obviously. It's a negative performance-deflating incident no matter how great his rehab went. The only question is if he is indeed good enough to come away with a win against Condit so that he can get BACK to where he should be AFTER the fight...no doubt in my mind this will be his biggest challenge in his entire life...any athletes out there would agree with me. -- Kyle Ertl

Anderson Silva said he didn't finish Thales Leites because of their friendships. Here's what Cagereaders had to say about this.

During one of Joe Louis's title defenses, he fought John Henry Lewis. Before the fight, Joe told his trainer that he didn't feel comfortable fighting such a good friend of his. Joe planed on carrying John for the full 15 rounds because he
did not want to hurt him.

Joe's trainer stated that he would be more likely to hurt John if he were to carrying him the full fight. Therefore, Joe went out and KOed John in the first round.

Both continued to be good friends. John Henry Lewis retired after his fight with Joe. It was the biggest purse of his career. -- Wrestling Roots

Its an embarrassment to the sport. They are professional fighters so they should act like it. -- Helio Fabian Rangel
