City, school leaders show off Fairview Park to real estate agents ...

By Kevin Kelley

Fairview Park

The more a real estate agent knows about a community, the more knowledgeable he or she appears, and the more homes he or she will sell in that area.

For the third time in four years, officials from Fairview Park and its public school district sponsored a conference for real estate agents. The 2012 Fairview Park Realtor Conference took place Thursday at the Gemini Center, the city?s $19 million recreation facility that opened in 2008.

During a presentation, Jim Kennedy, the city?s director of economic development, emphasized community features that would be of interest to young families. He spoke of the city?s strong recreation programs, its proximity to the Cleveland Metroparks and its strong property maintenance program.

?We hope you have a lot of success in bringing young families here,? Kennedy told the real estate professionals.

?This administration has taken a very proactive approach to the rejuvenation of this community,? Kennedy said in reference to his boss, Mayor Eileen Patton. The mayor was unable to address real estate agents as planned due to a family illness.

The conference began with a bus tour of the city on school buses supplied by the Fairview Park City Schools. The district?s Business Advisory Council sponsored the conference along with the city.

?We like to show off Fairview and encourage you to do business here,? Kennedy told real estate agents as he began narrating the tour. Superintendent Brion Deitsch narrated a second tour.

Buses drove past Gilles-Sweet Elementary School, which opened in 2007; Fairview High School; the city?s senior center; three of the city?s five parks; and several neighborhoods and subdivisions.

Deitsch later told agents how the district is

spending less per pupil and achieving higher pupil test scores while achieving financial stability. By supplying middle and high school students with

netbook computers, the schools have created a 21st-century learning environment, the superintendent said.

Lisa Harwood, a Remax Realtor who lives and works in Rocky River, attended a previous conference.

?I used all the information I received on that tour,? she told West Life. She said the information helps her educate potential homebuyers about features of the community, such as its parks and public schools.

Barbara Schroeder, another Remax Realtor who works out of Westlake, attended the conference after receiving an invitation in the mail.

?I like hearing about the new development projects,? she said.

Both Realtors said they would recommend the conference to their colleagues.

Both also said the real estate market is showing signs of improvement after a long slump.

?I?ve been so busy I haven?t been able to stop,? Harwood said. ?Properties that are priced right and in good condition are selling quickly.?

The conference also included a continuing education course for Realtors given by Angelo Russo, a local attorney and Fairview Park Chamber of Commerce trustee.

Russian rubles drops in early trading

(AP) ? Russia's currency, the ruble, has dropped in early trading for the eighth straight day.

The ruble lost 0.6 percent against the U.S. dollar at the MICEX exchange 30 minutes into the trading.

The currency lost 2.2 percent on Thursday and over 5.3 percent this week, pressured by the lower oil prices, the backbone of Russia's economy.

The Urals blend, viewed as a benchmark price for the oil that Russia exports, has lost more than 5 percent of its value this week and closed 0.8 percent lower, at $99.8, late Thursday.

Russian markets posted moderate gains at the opening.

Hacking the climate could lead to whiter, brighter skies

13 hrs.

Pumping a steady stream of sunlight-blocking particles into the stratosphere to fight global climate change would leave us with inescapable hazy and white skies such as those found over big cities, according to new research.

?The skies would be whiter/hazier everywhere, including on weekend getaways to the mountains,? study lead author Ben Kravitz?of the Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford University told me in an email today.

?People may or may not notice these changes, as a lot of color perception depends on physiology, context, time of day, etc., but the physical science basis for these changes would be there.?

Kravitz and his colleagues simulated the effect of mimicking volcanic eruptions to cool the climate by constantly filling the stratosphere with sulfate aerosols. The particles block some of the sunlight from reaching the surface, leading to a global cooling effect.

While this happens when big volcanoes erupt, the effect is short-lived because the particles eventually fall out of the sky.?

The concept of so-called solar geoengineering is to constantly replenish the particle supply to block two percent of the sun?s light, maintaining the planet-cooling effect. Doing so, according to the study, would make the sky three to five times brighter, as well as whiter. Sunsets would have an afterglow.

In addition to the whiter and hazier skies, the geoengineering approach might also increase global photosynthetic activity since plants grow more efficiently under diffuse light conditions. On the other hand, the effectiveness of solar power could be diminished since less sunlight would reach the panels.

Such a scheme is one possible geoengineering approach proposed to fight climate change in lieu of ? or in addition to ? curbing greenhouse gas emissions, which continue to rise despite years of international negotiations to hatch a plan to do so.

Kravitz cautions that his results are based on simulations and ?models aren?t a perfect proxy for the real world.??

In addition, if we were to choose a geoengineering approach in our efforts to combat climate change, we might go a different route, such as erecting giant artificial trees to suck carbon dioxide out the sky.

All of these approaches, Kravitz adds, are only Band-Aids that can ?alleviate some of the consequences of increased greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere ? it doesn?t go to the root of actually solving the climate change problem.?

?The only permanent solution to the problem of climate change,? he said, ?is to stop emitting CO2.?

The findings are reported June 1 in Geophysical Research Letters.?

Practical Home Improvement Problems Systems Explained

Unfortunately, some of the very best home improvement plans tend to be expensive. It is little consolation to realize that most people are in the same situation as you, we know. If you want to make some changes around the home, then you may need to look at things from a new perspective. So, it is time to get creative with your home and available resources. At the heart of the matter is becoming better informed so you realize just what is possible.

One of the most frequent approaches taken with home security as an improvement involves the use of security cameras. The surveillance industry has become huge all over the world, but hopefully you just need cameras and video. If you want to go wireless, then be sure you check out that area as there is a lot. What adds another dimension to this are all the clever designs that intend to camouflage your cameras. If you have some cash to spend, then you can truly get high tech with this.

For now, take a look in your attic, if you have one, and what you want to find are seams that are open to the outside. Everybody knows that attics tend to be a little drafty which is an obvious source of energy inefficiency.

In the interest of being energy efficient, you want to address any outstanding issues. Maybe you are aware of the type of aerosol foam that comes in a can, and that is one thing you can use. As you spray the foam, it is not necessary to dump it all in the seams since there is an expansion effect. Check out insights into blues riffs for excellent recommendations.

You can find some really good and useful home improvement organizational systems on the market. One simple and very cost effective solution is to look at closet organizers or organizing systems. None of this stuff is difficult to find, and they do not cost an arm and a leg, either. The primary material of choice would be molded plastic, and it is not something you want to keep out in the cold. Finding a good solution to clutter is usually a challenge, but if you are anything like me you will just throw it all out in the garbage.

Security is definitely something you can do to improve your home, so do not discount what is possible. So why not put security in place so everybody is taken care of, and it is a smart idea, too. You can find so many different things that are priced for those with a tight budget. There is a thriving second hand industry that is popping up, so keep that in mind, as well.

Diddy's Son's College Scholarship Sparks Controversy

Some are saying that his father's wealth makes it unfair for Justin Combs to get free ride at UCLA.

"It's all about the Benjamins" has been a long-running battle cry for , and now that his son Justin has earned a full athletic scholarship to UCLA, Puff's bank is once again the center of attention.

In November, the news broke that Justin Combs had accepted a full merit-based scholarship to play football for UCLA. But now, some local taxpayers and students are questioning whether the $54,000 scholarship is fair considering that Justin's dad topped Forbes' wealthiest hip-hop artists list last month after it was reported that he was worth more than half a billion dollars.

"UCLA's athletic department needs to consider the fact that perhaps there is another athlete on the football team who could perhaps really use this scholarship," UCLA student Neshemah Keetin told Los Angeles' CBS News affiliate. "Just being considerate that [with] our economy, students are trying to get to college through athletics and academics as well."

Once the news broke last year, a proud Puff Daddy issued a statement in support of his son. At that point, Justin's detractors hadn't voiced their displeasure. "As a parent, today is one of the proudest moments of my life. This is everything a father could want for his son, for him to excel at what he loves to do and is truly passionate about," he said. "Justin is a shining example of what hard work, determination and a strong mentality can achieve. I am honored to call him my son and am happy that he is fulfilling his dream."

Justin graduated with a 3.75 GPA from Iona Prep high school in New Rochelle, New York, where he was a top-rated cornerback. He received scholarship offers from state universities in Illinois, Virginia and Wyoming. During a CNN interview, the network's education contributor Dr. Steve Perry defended the young athlete. "He's done what he needs to do to be successful, and in a meritocracy we have to accept that no matter who your father is, whether he be rich, poor or absent, that you can in fact be successful on your own merit," he said. "There's nothing free about a Division I athletic scholarship. It's 40 hours-plus of work on campus every single week in order to maintain that scholarship."

UCLA spokesman Ricardo Vazquez echoed Perry's sentiment, explaining that the scholarship was based on Combs' talent on the football field and not his financial need. "Athletic scholarships, such as those awarded to football or basketball players, do not rely on state funds. Instead, these scholarships are entirely funded through UCLA Athletics ticket sales, corporate partnerships, media contracts and private donations from supporters."

Should Justin Combs accept the full scholarship to UCLA? Sound off in the comments!
