5 More Secret Features in OS X Lion [Mac OS X Tip]

5 More Secret Features in OS X LionOS X Lion has been out for over a week now, and now that you've had a chance to try Lifehacker's 10 favorite secret features of the new operating system, here's five more to test out over the weekend.

1. Reveal the Dock while using a fullscreen app

Lion's fullscreen apps sure are pretty, but they can slow you down by hiding many navigation elements of the operating system. If you want to reveal the dock while in full screen mode to quickly switch to a new program, TUAW reveals that you can simply rest on the bottom of the screen (or left or right side, if that's where you keep the Dock), then push it down as if you're trying to move beyond the edge of the monitor. It's not a natural movement, but the dock does come out of hiding as advertised.

2. Put your contact info on the lock screen

Though it was possible to do this in Snow Leopard with third party apps, Lion now allows you to place a personal message with your contact information on the lock screen for any good samaritan that should stumble upon your lost laptop. To enable the feature, just go to your "Security & Privacy" preference pane, check the box labeled "Show a message when the screen is locked," and fill in your information.

3. Move applications out of your Applications folder

Lion removed the ability to drag application files into a different folder, and instead only creates an alias for the program in the new folder while keeping the actual app package in the Applications folder. Luckily, Tested points out that you can still easily move applications to your heart's content by holding down the Command key as you drag.

4. Use Quick Look in Stacks

Ever since the release OS X Leopard, Stacks and Quick Look have been great tools for quickly accessing and checking files without opening a new window. Unfortunately, OS X bafflingly omitted the ability to use Quick Look from within a Stack, forcing you to open a new finder window. No more. Just mouse over your file in any stack and hit the spacebar as you normally would to get a quick preview of its contents.

5. Use the spacebar to zoom in on Mission Control thumbnails

If you keep a lot of windows open, it can be tough to see exactly what each one contains in Mission Control, especially on a tiny MacBook Air screen. Thankfully, Tested reveals that you can quickly zoom in on any window without exiting Mission Control by mousing over it and tapping the spacebar. Hit space again to shrink it back down.

These secrets will only get you started with unraveling Lion, so check out the rest of Lifehacker's coverage:

Jennifer Weiner broadens from best-sellers to TV (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Jennifer Weiner is an overachiever.

She's been a New York Times best-selling author since her very first novel, "Good In Bed," came out a decade ago. Now there are 11 million copies of her books circulating in 36 countries. Weiner just released her ninth novel, "Then Came You," two weeks after the premiere of her first TV show, ABC Family's "State of Georgia." While commuting between the show's Los Angeles set and her Philadelphia home, the 41-year-old writer started work on her 10th book.

And she still had time to talk with The Associated Press about writing, her creative inspiration and how she finds time to live-blog her favorite reality shows.

___

AP: Let's start with "State of Georgia." How did you like being an executive producer and writing for TV?

Weiner: We wanted to tell a story about two girls coming to New York City and trying to make big lives for themselves. I've always been interested in that moment and the woman in her 20s: You're not married, you don't have kids, you're sort of trying on different adult identities and there are so many possibilities, where the whole world is open in front of you. ... So I had this crash course in running a television show, and I was about three weeks into it when I realized that really everything I know about being an executive producer I learned from watching Liz Lemon on "30 Rock." Honest to God! It was like OK, here's the writers' room, and it was incredibly funny and a little bit filthy. ... It's much more of a collaborative experience than writing fiction is, obviously.

AP: You were finishing up "Then Came You" when you started on the show. What is the book about?

Weiner: "Then Came You" actually came from a New York Times Magazine article that ran a couple of years ago by a writer who'd been a reporter for the Times and she was married to this very wealthy older guy. They were struggling with fertility, so they hired a surrogate ... but it turned out to be very much a story about money ... and it made me think a lot. I've always been interested in the economics of reproduction, who gets what they want when it comes to childbearing and how these days, money is a tremendous advantage. Money is a tremendous advantage in just about everything, but in terms of reproduction, if you're a poor woman and you are infertile, it's like too bad, so sad. And if you are a wealthy woman, you can kind of buy whatever you want.

AP: What is the relationship like between writing for TV and writing fiction?

Weiner: When I wrote "Good in Bed," I was working full time as a reporter, so I was writing on nights and weekends and had the story going in the back of my mind. And that's what it was with "Georgia" with the book I started this spring. Having a day job again I found really kind of fueled my fiction, because it became almost this forbidden thing where I had to sneak off and do it in private.

AP: Between all this, and your two young kids, how do you have time to live-tweet "The Bachelor"?

Weiner: Generally the kids are in bed, or they're supposed to be. The 8-year-old, she'll get up and I'll be down there with the show on and my laptop open and I'll be like, `Mommy's working,' and she'll go, `Ugh. This is not work.' She's gotten very dismissive with me. I'm going to watch the show anyhow. I've just been devoted to the franchise since the very first airing of it, so it's actually not too hard to make time to watch two hours of really cheesy reality TV. I just prioritize.

Mexico: 2 US citizens killed in prison fight (AP)

EL PASO, Texas ? Two U.S. citizens were killed during a prison fight that left 17 inmates dead and many others wounded in a municipal prison in Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas.

Hector Conde, spokesman for the Cereso municipal prison, identified the dead U.S citizens as Nicolas Frias Salas, 35, a former Los Angeles resident who was in prison for homicide and unlawful possession of weapons and Luis Adrian Estrada Perez, 28, formerly of El Paso, who was serving a term for kidnapping.

Both were living in Juarez when they were sent to prison, Conde said.

Mexican authorities told the U.S. consulate in Juarez about the deaths, but it couldn't confirm the men were U.S. citizens until relatives identified the corpses, consulate spokeswoman Olga Bashbush said. The consulate has located one man's family so far and expects to release his name in the coming days, she said.

A video released by prison authorities shows how two hooded inmates got keys to different doors of the facility, opened one to release other armed inmates and then opened the door of a room where the victims were being held and shot them with automatic weapons. The attack took less than a minute.

State prosecutors in northern Chihuahua are investigating reports that inmates brought four women into the prison before the shootings and were holding a party despite prison regulations against it.

After the inmates were killed, municipal police chief Julian Leyzaola's bulletproof car was sprayed with bullets by federal policemen who had arrived at the prison moments before.

The police chief was not hurt in the shooting that a Public Safety Department statement attributed to the former Mexican Army lieutenant colonel refusing to stop at a checkpoint set up by federal police.

"For this reason, his vehicle was fired upon to make it stop," the statement said.

Known for his hard-line approach to combatting crime, Leyzaola is credited for pacifying Tijuana. He took over the job in March and promised that Juarez would be much calmer by the end of 2011. So far, there has been a 22 percent reduction in the number of murders Juarez compared to the same period last year.

It's not clear whether the drop in violence is a result of the arrival of federal police in 2010, Leyzaola's purging of the municipal police or an alleged partial truce between drug cartels.

The incident marks yet another low point in the tense relations between municipal and federal forces. In January, Juarez's mayor Hector Murguia survived a shooting between his security detail and federal police.

Mexican media reported that Murguia announced just Monday that federal police chief Facundo Rosas Rosas told him his forces would start pulling out in September.

However, the federal Interior Department issued a statement late Wednesday, saying "federal forces will not abandon Ciudad Juarez" and "federal forces ... will adjust their presence with the aim of supporting the state government in promoting greater public safety."

Wine & Spirits: Luscious Li-BAY-tions: Must Try Drinks (and More ...

Bloody Marys with veggie-infused vodka on a deck overlooking the water; flutes of Champagne on a sailboat at sunset; and cold beers with hot, steamed crabs are waiting on Maryland?s Eastern Shore.
By Kelly A. Magyarics

Drinks on the waterfront deck are a perfect way to spend an afternoon in St. Michaels.

A couple of thirst and soul-quenching days recently in Talbot County on Maryland?s Eastern Shore left me longing for more time in ?The Land of Pleasant Living.? But let?s face it: escaping to peace and tranquility from the DC Metro area can be less than relaxing, what with construction on the Beltway and weekend Bay Bridge backups. So is it worth it? Absolutely. If you are planning a weekend away in St. Michaels, Oxford, Cambridge or Easton, and (like me) you flee during a crazy Friday afternoon rush hour, a bevy of liquid options await?the surefire cure for the stress you leave behind on the mainland.

Enjoy a glass of sparkling wine on your private deck at the St. Michaels Harbour Inn.

Before exploring (and pouring), check into a waterfront room at the St. Michaels Harbour Inn (harbourinn.com, 800.955.9001). We loved sitting on our balcony with a glass of Vinho Verde, watching the action in the marina below. Equally fun is heading to the waterfront hotel pool?hopping on a recent Saturday afternoon with families, couples and groups of friends all soaking up the sun while enjoying an Orange Crush or Harborita?the hotel?s Pascal?s Tavern has a convenient walk-up window for pool guests, who happily imbibe while swimming (drinks seemed to be permitted/encouraged in the pool?)

For dinner, take a leisurely drive to the picturesque Tilghman Island Inn (tilghmanislandinn.com, 800.955.9001). We unknowingly but thankfully timed our reservation for sunset, and were treated to an orange- and pink-tinged end to the day. Don?t miss Executive Chef David McCallum?s well-executed cuisine, like mussels saut?ed with Andouille, tomato, garlic and white wine; and the soft shell crabs (get them while you can!), with a bottle of crisp Delaporte Sancerre. The restaurant also occasionally features a specialty cocktail?the night we dined we sampled a Blackberry Mint Julep. Window or outdoor seating might let you catch a glimpse of the Lady Patty sailboat cruising slowly by (ladypatty.com, 888.250.3030), which offers super fun (and romantic) Champagne Sunset Sails each evening in season from 6:30-8:30 PM, for $45 per adult.

The tangy, tantalizing Grapefruit Crush at St. Michaels Crab and Steakhouse.

For lunch, snag an outdoor table at the St. Michaels Crab & Steakhouse (stmichaelscrabhouse.com, 410.745.3737), located directly across the marina from the Harbour Inn. It?s been owned and operated by Philadelphia born and bred chef Eric Rosen since 1994 (you can?t miss the Eagles, 76ers, Phillies and Flyers memorabilia that adorns the walls.) I?m a total crab purist, and usually steer clear of crabcakes on any menu, even if servers claim ?there is no filler in ours.? But these were the real deal?I opted for the crabcake sandwich (broiled, natch), but didn?t go near the bun?the meat was just that succulent and rich. Just as deliciously intriguing to me were the patio-perfect drinks. Lesley?s Famous Bloody Mary mixes vodka that?s been infused with freshly chopped vegetables (head inside to see the big glass jug o? juice steeping prominently on the bar,) garnished with a pepperoncini, olive and wedge of lime, and rimmed with Old Bay. It was fresh, savory, and the perfect accompaniment to Virginia Select oysters on the half shell. The Grapefruit Crush was a pleasantly surprising tart concoction made with Absolut Ruby Red Grapefruit Vodka, Triple Sec, fresh grapefruit juice and a touch of Sprite. I literally could have sipped those all afternoon?

If you crave a break from the ubiquitous seafood that?s available on the Eastern Shore (hey, it could happen,) walk to Ava?s Pizzeria (avaspizzeria.com, 410.745.381), a few blocks from the water in the cute downtown area of St. Michaels. But be warned: the restaurant does not take reservations, and on a busy summer Saturday evening we waited well over an hour for a table for four. See if you can snag a spot by the water feature on the lovely patio located behind the restaurant. Start with their paper thin, never greasy, couldn?t-ever-eat-just-one homemade potato chips, topped with Parmesan, Old Bay or bleu cheese, alongside a split of Piper-Heidsieck Brut Champagne. Then order one of their signature wood fired pizzas cooked in their oak-fired oven?we were partial to the Spinach and Artichoke Pie finished with basil oil, with a bottle of the 2006 Lucignano Chianti Colli Fiorentini.

All good weekends must come to an end. But before we were ready to once again? brave that bridge traffic, we needed one last crab fix. A quick Yelp search for great places in the area to pick crabs led us south on Kent Island to the Kentmorr Restaurant and Crabhouse (kentmorr.com, 410.643.2263) in Stephensville,

Grab a Mai Tai at Kentmorr's beachfront Tiki Bar.

where steamed blue crabs are available by the piece, half dozen or dozen. You can also partake (as we did) in the all-you-can-eat-feast (market price, which was $32.95 during our visit,) which includes crab soup, half a pound of steamed shrimp, corn on the cob, cole slaw and as many crabs as you can crack and devour (mostly mediums, but pretty darn good.) Wash ?em down with an ice cold beer or Gin and Tonic. And if you have time and traffic?s not looking too bad (you can see the Bay Bridge from their deck), spend an hour or two on their private, bay front beach, swaying in one of their hammock swings and sipping a frozen drink from their thatch-roofed Tiki Bar. Ahhh?..

Mirror to review procedures after hacking scandal (AP)

LONDON ? Britain's Trinity Mirror newspaper group on Tuesday announced a review into its editorial procedures following the explosion of the tabloid phone hacking scandal at its News International rival.

Trinity Mirror PLC spokesman Nick Fullagar said Tuesday that the inquiry was not an investigation into claims of phone hacking, but acknowledged that the scandal over the News of the World's espionage campaign helped prompt the review.

"In light of recent events, we thought it was timely to look at our controls and procedures," Fullagar said in a telephone interview. "Clearly, after any significant event, it's just good corporate governance."

The Daily Mirror tabloid has come under a cloud of suspicion following revelations that rival newspaper the News of the World ? recently shut down by publisher News International ? routinely intercepted voicemails left for public figures. One former Mirror journalist has alleged that phone hacking was rife at the left-leaning title when former editor Piers Morgan was in charge.

Last week The New York Times has cited five unnamed former journalists at another Mirror title, a sports-and-celebrity-focused Sunday newspaper called The People, as saying hacking was commonplace there as well from the late 1990s to early 2000.

The Trinity Mirror has not commented on the claims, although British media watchers have long suspected that the hacking extended well beyond the News of the World.

Legal problems for the defunct paper and its parent company News International broadened Tuesday when lawyers representing English football star Ashley Cole filed suit claiming that his phone had been hacked. His lawyer, Graham Shear, said the claim is well founded, but would not release details.

As the scandal has moved beyond the News of the World, particular attention has been focused on Piers Morgan, with bloggers and journalists zeroing in on references to phone hacking made by the CNN host in his 2005 book, "The Insider" and in past interviews.

"Loads of newspaper journalists were doing it," Morgan said in an interview with supermodel Naomi Campbell published in 2007.

Morgan had since denied being involved in phone hacking.

Trinity Mirror's decision to review its procedures came as British government ministers revealed the extent of their social and business contacts with senior executives of News International and Rupert Murdoch, chief of the parent company, News Corp.

The government revealed that Chancellor George Osborne had met Murdoch and other senior management figures ? including his son James Murdoch, the company's top European executive, and former News International chief Rebekah Brooks ? 16 different times since the Conservative Party came to power last year.

Prime Minister David Cameron, who earlier said he had 26 meetings with Murdoch or his executives since taking office, had ordered other ministers to release information about their meetings with the media chieftains.

The ministers did not state what business was discussed at the various lunches, dinners and private meetings as Murdoch pursued governmental approval for his doomed bid to take full control of the satellite broadcaster BSkyB. Opposition leaders are now demanding that the minutes of the meetings be released.

The scandal, which eventually led Murdoch to withdraw his bid for BSkyB because of stiff governmental opposition, has focused attention on other tabloids in Britain's ultra-competitive news market.

Fullagar, the Trinity Mirror's spokesman, said his group's review would cover how editors were made aware of where stories came from. It would also cover how and under what circumstances Trinity Mirror paid for stories.

Fullagar said that the review panel would also include editorial, legal and financial directors. It will be chaired by Charmian Steven, the company's director of risk and audit.

Meanwhile the publisher of the Daily Mail tabloid, which competes with the Mirror, said it would not be launching an internal review. Like the Mirror, the Mail has faced allegations that its reporters hacked phones or illegally obtained personal information in their quest for scoops.

Daily Mail and General Trust PLC Chief Executive Martin Morgan told reporters Tuesday that his company's board had been assured that its titles had not published stories based on intercepted messages.

Personal Finance | Joesoc News

Monday, July 25th 2011. Posted in Business by zorareta

Personal finance means an application regarding finance?s principles to decisions relating to money of a person or unit of family. It shows paths according to which families or individual obtain, save, spend or budget resources of money over longer period, considering various risks of finance as well as future events of life. Personal finance includes payment done for purchasing insurance (property or health insurance) or buying any asset, or on education etc. Personal-finance?s components may include savings-account and checking, credit-cards as well as consumer debts, making investment in stock-market, plans for retirement, and benefits from social-security, policies of insurance and management of income-tax.

The Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Readiness survival pyramid

Emergency preparedness is a noble effort, one that every individual is obliged to make but in reality, an efficient search should not be done indiscriminately. Many people start with good intentions, but they are promoting in their production and food preservation activities misguided. You have a big goal in mind (for example, be prepared for the worst, should a disaster or emergency), but there is no method to their madness. After she accidentally accumulatedsome of the perceived need for all possible threats, I'm not sure if they all they need, and if they pool their resources properly. Of course, almost anything is better than nothing, but there should be some priority, starting with the preparation for a short period of disaster scenario survival to the end to a situation, "Doomsday". Not everything can be prepared, because it is impossible to accurately predict the future, but it is certainlyto be better than with over-prepared, and the best approach is to build a solid foundation of emergency preparedness, and paste it in the correct order.

The proposed procedure is as follows: the first thing everyone should keep in an emergency, an emergency kit for 72 hours. A 72-hour emergency kit is an easy to transport and easy access to his package contains the elements as three days in water (most important) and non-perishable food(Preferably, ready for consumer goods), probably, is the personal toiletries / hygiene items, first aid kit and medicines, flashlight and batteries, blankets and sleeping bags, a radio, a pocket knife, etc. 72 hours it takes to restore to normal service order after a disaster to stop large scale. You should plan to be self-sufficient for at least 3 days.

The next step in the pyramid is 3 months supply of food preservation that elements of which alsousually eat and can turn easily, so no waste. These are things like canned goods, to fit easily in your pantry or cupboard and frozen foods (meat, vegetables and canned).

MRE's (meals ready to eat), freeze-dried foods, dehydrated foods and are the next step in setting priorities. These grocery items storage space for long periods in a climate-controlled environment, usually between 10 and 30 years.

Dry-pack items for storage, such as wheat, rice, beans and move us further up ready in the pyramid. These elements are very nutrient dense and more work for food preparation, but are extremely versatile and can be used in the recipes too numerous to be counted. Points are very good for your diet. Other dry-pack items contain milk powder, eggs and butter, powder, bars (chicken and beef), flour, pasta, noodles, etc.

After examining the preparation of food in an appropriate manner, it is time to move onavailable pyramid level with more clothing and shoes. Remember, you need to consider the climate where you live and change (or not) of the season. If you are in a region that has harsh winters to live, be sure to have a proper coats, sweaters, thermal underwear, warm clothes, gloves, boots, blankets, and have.

The next level of the pyramid is of firearms and ammunition. Above all, these serve as tools to kill wildlife for meat, this should be necessary. SecondlyThese can serve as protection in case of failure, social unrest (riots, looting, etc.) where you need to serve can protect your family from harm.

Bases such as tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, camping stoves / ovens dutch, fishing rods and tackle, a Leatherman, matches, a lantern, and all port-potties make you more confident in your ability to survive in the middle of nature, if you need to move even higher in the pyramid evacuated yet ready and needs toYour home for any reason for a certain period of time.

A person can survive indefinitely without a shower, but not comfortable. Therefore, this category of articles for personal hygiene is easier near the top of the pyramid, but still very valid and useful part of it. The specific elements that should include here, soap, shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste, a razor and shaving cream, deodorant, sanitary napkins and diapers.

Finally, after the completion of the surveyprevious layers and layers (and not before) that the Pyramid of the readiness with an emergency fund. It replace up to three to six months of living expenses and then with gold and silver will be completed in certain (the "poor gold ) gold bullion.

if Pool is a sport, then define "sport' - Today, 12:16 PM

It seems that too many people who participate in competitive, physical, recreational activities become peeved at the idea of their
game being excluded as a sport.

The most important aspect to my definition of a sport is quite simple,

any game requiring the simultaneous attempt of your opponent(s) to prevent your progress...obviously there would be other requirements as that definition alone would qualify Video Games and other such competitions...but that's the gist...

Football, Basketball, Hockey, Soccer, Boxing, Wrestling etc...would constitute classic examples.

These types of games introduce a level of dynamics and psychology that are simply not present elsewhere.

I believe it is very difficult to understand these concepts unless you have played such games at a relatively high level and/or have
studied sporting competitions of many types over many years.

It is also my belief that these games are the most difficult of all requiring overall skill levels which dwarf those skills required to compete in other games, and generally speaking, the participants of which are derived from the deepest talent pools available.

Billiards obviously would not qualify under my definition,

nor would other games which are most often considered sports
such as Track and Field events, Swiw races, Gymnastics, and many more which in my view fall under the category of "competitions" requiring a certain level of athleticism

I welcome all input (except from bowlers)

Any athletic activity that requires both mental and physical skill to compete, where the individuals mental and physical skills are used to either a) perform the athletic activities prescribed function for score, or b) alter the oppositions athletic activity by direct or indirect means, or c) both a & b.

Just because there aren't sweaty bodies rubbing against each other doesn't mean it isn't a sport. I've played college sports, and nothing compares to the athleticism it takes to play pool.

Most of the popular sports have similar objectives. In pool, you are trying to project an object at another object, to project it at another object. The execution is what makes it a sport.

On a very basic level, it looks like a small table compared to something like a soccer field, but the table itself, is massive.

Your definition would also exclude golf which I think is the most difficult "sport" on the planet. It's true you don't have bodies banging into each other but golf at a high level requires tremendous physical and mental stamina. Think about a sport where you can play almost perfectly for 63 holes and then blow the entire tournament on one bad swing.

I'm not sure whether pool could be considered a sport but it is certainly a very challenging and beautiful game. It is underrated and under appreciated because it takes someone with a fair amount of knowledge of the game to understand the skill required.

Just IMO...

I don't define words, I let other people do it:

dictionary.com:

Quote:

an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
I think long sessions on the table constitutes a certain level of "athletic activity."

Miriam-Webster is even more permissive:

Quote:

Definition of SPORT
1
a : a source of diversion : recreation b : sexual play c (1) : physical activity engaged in for pleasure (2) : a particular activity (as an athletic game) so engaged in
2
a : pleasantry, jest b : often mean-spirited jesting : mockery, derision
3
a : something tossed or driven about in or as if in play b : laughingstock
4
a : sportsman b : a person considered with respect to living up to the ideals of sportsmanship <a good sport> <a poor sport> c : a companionable person
Comparing any two sports is like comparing apples and oranges. I don't know why we bother. There's room enough in the world for all of them.
Every generation laughs at the old fashions, but follows religiously the new. -- Henry David Thoreau

Perhaps we need a way to separate a game from a sport. - Today, 03:28 PM

perhaps, by defining the difference between a game and a sport would be a good start. ie all sports are not games and all games are not sports.

Just a note about dictionaries. Dictionaries are sociological reports--they don't offer prescriptive or authoritative definitions for words, they simply report on actual usage. It is how a word is actually used within a linguistic community that determines what a dictionary reports as its definition. This is why what we think of as a word's meaning can change over time.

We got up early to do stretches on the tracks and exercises. Then we did laps because bobby came late. Then bobby would miss by a few seconds and we did more laps. Bobby came on time sometimes. I hate Bobby and coach. Sometimes it was fun when we scrimmaged, but most of pre-season was endurance training.

"You're as strong as our weakest link, guys"---coach

Then we hit the weights after training every other day for an hour. Yip we had boyish figures for the entire summer, then it goes away.

Training for pool--Once you're there, it's never gone. Those guys are still beasts.

Sex can be a sport, can't it? Also, I'm calling bs for giving bowling a free pass.

If this were a poll, I'd vote yes for billiards being a sport. However, the label is not that important.

You could also call it gambling, thereapy, recreation, whatever.
